It stars Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen and Emma D’Arcy as his royal rival Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. And while it doesn’t look like any dragons were harmed in the making of the trailer or the show, it sure looks like a few super blond wigs should have lost their lives.

With just a month to go, more details are emerging on arguably the most anticipated new TV series of the year.
One of the only people on Earth to have seen House of the Dragon is George RR Martin himself, who wrote online: “Those of you who like complex, conflicted, grey characters (as I do) will like this series, I think. Put simply, if you’re excited about House of the Dragon, then remember this feeling. This is one of the most interesting aspects of the whole shebang. Taking place 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon will see the Targaryens in full pomp, although judging by nudges and hints from those in the know, this might not last for the entire duration of the series. And these challenges might explain why the House of the Dragon press onslaught has already begun. House of the Dragon is now one month away, and to say that it has an uphill struggle ahead of it is an understatement.
HBO's Game Of Thrones prequel (and so many blonde wigs) are coming.
A character says, “Knives will come out,” and the next shot is of Prince Daemon (Matt Smith) being threatened with a knife. A voiceover reminds us that “your family has dragons” over footage of a scorched field. A different character proclaims, “War is afoot” over a shot of two factions squaring off to battle. Reminiscent of the thematically appropriate instrumental covers he became known for in his second HBO outing, this trailer features Djawadi’s orchestra-heavy cover of the Velvet Underground’s “Venus In Furs.” It’s a bit of an obvious choice, as the mashup literally features beautiful women wearing furs. The budget is enormous (seriously, the dragons looks amazing). And the battles are as muddy as ever. While we all know that no one has a better story than Bran the Broken (sigh), it is actually quite nice to revisit this world with a completely new cast of characters that a certain showrunning duo won’t have a chance to get their grubby hands on.
A new House of the Dragon trailer gives us a better look at the Game of Thrones prequel series. The series is scheduled to premiere on August 21st on Crave.
Unsurprisingly, HBO has reportedly invested heavily in House of the Dragon with a budget of more than $15 million USD (roughly $19 million CAD) per episode. House of the Dragon was co-created by Ryan Condal, Miguel Sapochnik and Game of Thrones book series author George R.R. Martin.Condal is the co-showrunner alongside GoT veteran Sapochnik, who will direct the pilot and other episodes. House of the Dragon stars Paddy Considine, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy and Fabien Frankel. Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best and Sonoya Mizuno are also featured in the series.
Ahead of its Comic-Con panel this Saturday, HBO has released a new trailer for House of Dragon showcasing plenty of action from the upcoming series.
Viewers can expect the usual mix of sword fights and political intrigue that made the original Game of Thrones so compelling to watch throughout most of its run. Let us know in the comment section below! But before that happens, fans can get an early look at HBO’s return to Westeros. The network just released a brand new House of the Dragon trailer that gives us our best look yet at the Targaryen civil war.

The significant difference between GoT and House of the Dragon is that the prequel takes place before dragons became (temporarily) extinct, and many of the players involved have fully-grown, fire-breathing pets—which makes the stakes even higher. You’d be hard-pressed to glean these politics from the trailer, which plays up the initial tension between Princess Rhaenyra and her husband/uncle (what is a GoT story without some Targaryen incest!), Daemon (Smith), who believes he should rule. The trailer quickly establishes the stakes of the events that transpired about 200 years before the main series began: As the reign of King Viserys I Targaryen (Considine) begins to wane, a contentious battle for control of the throne breaks out between his daughter,
House of the Dragon showrunners explained how they're approaching sex scenes in the Game of Thrones prequel.
We have a number of births in the show and basically decided to give them different themes and explore them from different perspectives the same way I did for a bunch of battles on Thrones." Specifically, HBO is being mindful of the way sexual violence is portrayed in the prequel series after Game of Thrones was rightfully criticized for its handling of such scenes. They ultimately decided to "pull back" on the amount of sex scenes included, though Sapochnik noted, "You can't ignore the violence that was perpetrated on women by men in that time.
Showrunner Miguel Sapochnik says the spin-off has fewer sex scenes, while the approach to depictions of sexual assault is handled “carefully, thoughtfully".

House of the Dragon star Steve Toussaint reveals Game of Thrones role he auditioned for.
That was one of the roles I auditioned for." "I ended up working with a girl called Jessica Henwick [who played Nymeria Sand, one of the Sand Snakes]. I did a job with her," he recalled. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Toussaint revealed that he'd auditioned for the hit show multiple times with little success.
'House of the Dragon' Star Steve Toussaint Was 'Racially Abused' on Social Media After Casting · "I can't allow that to bother me," the "Game of Thrones" prequel ...
“Obi-Wan Kenobi” actress Moses Ingram was warned by Lucasfilm about social media trolls, and Ingram received an onslaught of direct messages and hateful comments after starring as Reva the Inquisitor in the Disney+ series. “We knew from the outset that we wanted to change that conversation,” Condal explained. “Because it’s a diverse world [George R.R.] Martin has created if you look [beyond Westeros], and I think this show comes closer to that.” “I didn’t realize [the casting] was a big deal until I was racially abused on social media,” Toussaint told The Hollywood Reporter. “Yeah, that shit happened. (Heresy, I know, but being the author, I am allowed to say so),” Martin wrote. Sure, there are some changes from ‘Fire & Blood’ — we could not present three alternative versions of every major event, not and keep our sanity — but I think Ryan Condal and his writers made good choices.
HBO's first 'Game of Thrones' prequel is still a month away, but a recent trailer and other features offer clues as to the show's themes—and dragons.
Rhaenyra’s “When I am queen, I will create a new order” proclamation in the trailer rings of Daenerys’s promised wheel-breaking. But given that the book reads more as a history tome than a narrative tale, the show has plenty of space to widen certain threads and improvise within the predefined plot beats. Even in this article, I couldn’t help but explain it as such: An emphasis on politics hews closely to the original show, while a time jump doesn’t, and so on. Still, the spine of the story appears the same as the original series, with a tight focus on the politics inside the Red Keep and on the characters eyeing the Iron Throne. That’s a fascinating first step given other movement in the Thrones universe: Martin told THR that with the vast offering of spinoffs being planned—from House of the Dragon to a Sea Snake show to a Dunk and Egg adaptation to animated projects—he hopes to expand the tone and focus of his franchise’s offerings. Martin infamously attempted, and then abandoned, an effort to insert a five-year time jump between books, which catalyzed just the first of many delays to his writing. But after the disaster of Season 8, and after the Long Night show’s roughly $30 million pilot didn’t wow executives, they switched gears and invested in House of the Dragon instead. According to the showrunners, centering this gender imbalance was a conscious, if organic, decision. On the other hand, House may have more expansive blockbuster scenes than Thrones—or, at least, more than the show had in early seasons. With just a month to go until its Aug. 21 premiere date, House of the Dragon’s press tour is beginning to flap its wings in force. The show’s source text, Fire and Blood, is mostly a political history, after all. That history will carry to the prequel show, which includes at least 17 dragons, per the THR story, along with a functional dragon pit and riding infrastructure. If House falls flat, the Thrones-verse might be pruned before it begins to bud.

“We knew from the outset that we wanted to change that conversation,” Condal told THR. “The world changed a lot between 2011 and 2021 and [so did] what audiences expect to see on camera. “Yeah, that s**t happened,” he confirmed. “I was just like, ‘Oh wow,’ and then I thought, ‘Okay, so this means a lot to some people, but I can’t allow that to bother me.’”
HBO gave fans a glimpse of the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, which will explain the Targaryen's fall from the Iron Throne.
In the trailer released July 20, the Targaryen family is challenged when King Viserys (Paddy Considine) has to name his heir. Rather, we designed it and then kind of worked backward." "It was real fun to build that," Sapochnik told Entertainment Weekly. "I've got to say, it's one of the most satisfying processes because there was no limit placed on how we did it.

Ser Harrold is tasked with an important role: to protect Princess Rhaenyra, the chosen heir by King Viserys I. However, this is Westeros, and women can't rule.
Ser Harrold is going to be extremely important in the protection of his princess. At least, that’s the opinion of a lot of people. Their duty is to protect the king, and McTavish’s Ser Harrold Westerling takes his vow extremely seriously.

Rhaenyra is her own person who was born into this time of extreme power, wealth, and decadence whereas Daenerys was born a pauper because this dynasty fell—largely as a result of events in this story.” “It is very much a story about a patriarchy told through the point-of-view of two women.” This begins with the day Viserys names his firstborn daughter Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock in her youth, Emma D’Arcy later) as his heir, even as he’s urged to take a second wife in hopes of producing a son. [Daemon] is similarly a bit of a rogue prince trying to find his footing and place in this world.” Whereas Game of Thrones began in the 17th uneasy year of Robert Baratheon’s reign, House of the Dragon picks up 105 years after Aegon Targaryen I conquered Westeros and founded King’s Landing. It is there we’ll be introduced to a host of Targaryens of various political ambitions and a whole palace of new courtiers. “The trick with this story is it’s multi-generational,” Condal says. He’s the second fiddle, in that case to the Queen of England, his own wife, and is a bit adrift. Yet there’s an undeniable excitement in Condal’s voice while discussing the new show; he’s eager for fans to discover a different era of Westeros, one set about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. “This is just a very decadent time,” Condal says. He first read the earliest books after the third novel A Storm of Swords was published in 2000, discovering the saga while fresh out of college. The two became acquainted in 2012, and Martin seemed eager to get Condal into Westeros ever since. “I thought we were just getting together socially,” Condal recalls in 2022, “but he said, ‘I need you to write a pilot for me.
