Yes, Elisjsha Dicken Is a Good Samaritan—and He Deserves a Medal (Foundation for Economic Education)

Gun control advocates immediately condemned the police chief for his “Good Samaritan” reference, drawn from a famous parable told by Jesus Christ. A local ...

And he offered support for the threat of force to prevent the theft of property as well. When Elisjsha Dicken pulled out his gun to stop a shooting spree, he had every reason to believe he might attract the shooter’s aim and be killed himself. As a general principle, Jesus argued, you should love your neighbor but the same Jesus would urge you to arm yourself if your neighbor threatens your life or property. Elisjsha Dicken did not escalate anything; in fact, he dramatically and decisively de-escalated it in the only possible way, given the circumstances. It implies that Elisjsha Dicken should have run for cover and allowed the Greenwood shooter to kill another dozen or two people. For centuries, many people have employed the term “Good Samaritan” to describe anyone who isn’t compelled to come to the aid of the innocent but takes the initiative to do so anyway. Undoubtedly, the critical reporter in this instance is a person of good intent. As I wrote in my 2020 book, Was Jesus a Socialist?, if the Samaritan had ignored the man or expected the government to help him, we would likely know him today as the “Good-for-Nothing” Samaritan. He can’t imagine Jesus endorsing Dicken’s action because Jesus was a man of peace. So strictly speaking, the Greenwood police chief’s reference was not entirely analogous to Elisjsha Dicken’s action in taking down the shooter at the shopping mall. I cannot believe we live in a world where the term can equally apply to someone killing someone. The next day, the Greenwood police chief added, “Many more people would have died last night if not for the responsible armed citizen.”

In the interim, we ask that you respect the privacy of Eli and his family.” She said she took her coat off and put a tourniquet around it and waited,” her grandmother explained. Was very proficient in that, was tactically sound and as he moved to close in on the suspect, he was also motioning for people to exit behind him,” Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison said about Eli’s actions. Because we want to respect the ongoing criminal investigation by the Greenwood Police Department and take time to honor the three innocent lives lost, we won’t be making any substantive comments on Sunday’s events until after the authorities’ investigation is closed. “If he didn’t stop, you think of how many people in that food court?” Shay’s grandmother asked. Eli has not yet spoken with the media about the shooting. And pray for this world!” She says ‘Grandma I’m OK, but I’m terrified,’ and then she says, ‘Grandma what is the world coming to?’ And she says ‘I don’t think I’ll ever step foot in a mall again,’” the grandmother told 13News. “I just know that I’m so proud of him for what he’s done. “Just please let’s pray for them. Shay was traumatized, but safe, her grandmother says, thanks to Shay’s boyfriend, Elisjsha Dicken. The 22-year-old from Seymour took down the mall shooter with lethal force. He engaged the gunman from quite a distance with a handgun.

"This young man, Greenwood's good Samaritan, acted within seconds, stopping the shooter and saving countless lives," Myers said. In 10 of those, the "good guy" was a security guard or an off-duty police officer, ALERRT data showed. Police then took Dicken to the station, where detectives interviewed him. As he moved in on the gunman, Dicken motioned for people to leave behind him, the chief said. There were at least 434 active shooter attacks in the US from 2000 to 2021, according to ALERRT data. While the shooter, 20-year-old Douglas Sapirman, fired 24 rounds from an AR-15-style rifle, Dicken did not hesitate to use the Glock handgun he was legally carrying.

"The time lapse between the moment that Jonathan Sapirman exited the restroom and began shooting, and when he was shot by the civilian (Elisjsha Dicken) was only fifteen seconds, not two minutes," Greenwood Police Chief James Ison said in a statement. Dicken's attorney said Monday that he was "proud" to serve his client, calling him "a true American hero who saved countless lives." An armed civilian stopping a gunman is very uncommon, according to data from the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training Center cited by The Associated Press. From 2000 to 2021, less than 3% of instances where someone attacked multiple people ended with a civilian firing at them, the AP said. "Many more people would have died last night if not for a responsible armed citizen who took action within the first two minutes of this shooting," Ison said, calling his actions "nothing short of heroic." Police previously said the incident began at approximately 4:54 p.m. local time, when the shooter entered the mall and went to a food court bathroom. It took just 15 seconds for an armed civilian to neutralize a man who opened fire in a mall food court in Indiana on Sunday, authorities said.
