Normally during the weeks leading up to NFL training camp, there are reports about players being in the “best shape of their lives.

Stroud also reported Fournette seemed to struggle with the heat and pointed to his physique as a possible cause during the team’s training sessions in June. He produced 1,266 yards from scrimmage, caught 69 passes and scored 10 touchdowns. Quite the opposite.

"Coaches were not happy, and that's an understatement, when he didn't participate in the OTAs, but then he shows up at the mandatory minicamp weighing damn near 260 [pounds]," Stroud said of Fournette on the Sports Day Tampa Bay podcast. However, since that deal has been signed, it doesn't appear like the Bucs coaches are all too thrilled with how Fournette has carried himself. Fournette was then signed to another one-year deal that following offseason and again impressed with a 2021 campaign where he totaled over 1,200 yards from scrimmage to go along with 10 touchdowns.

Leonard Fournette weight gain: Buccaneers unhappy with RB this ... (DraftKings Nation)

The NFL offseason is a time for players to take a much needed break, but in the modern NFL, that break doesn't mean you aren't still in preparation mode for ...

We’ll see if Fournette got the message, as he will have had over a month to shed a few pounds before the team starts training camp on July 26. Fournette had been on one-year deals the last two seasons, but was able to win over the team and signed a three-year contract this offseason. Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Leonard Fournette apparently hasn’t been that vigilant this offseason, and was up to almost 260 pounds for mandatory minicamp and the Bucs powers that be weren’t too happy about the situation, per Rick Stroud.

In 2018, Jake Dotchin of the Tampa Bay Lightning reportedly showed up “30-35 pounds” heavier than his playing weight the previous season. These guys have the shortest offseason, from roughly May to July, and many of them have international tournaments to keep them busy during that time. I was surprised to learn that hockey had an instance of a 30-pound gain. A player like Fournette can go basically six months, from the third week of January to the second week of June, without seeing anyone he works for in person. Really, you could put any women’s sport in this category, since so few of them pay their players enough to not have to find other leagues to play in during the offseason. Last week, Tampa Bay Times reporter Rick Stroud said on his podcast that Bucs running back Leonard Fournette is now “about a donut shy” of weighing 260 pounds.

Buccaneers coaches were reportedly not happy when the running back showed up to mandatory minicamp about 30 pounds heavier.

If the report is accurate, Fournette will have a long way to go if he wants to be ready for training camp July 26. “Coaches were not happy, and that’s an understatement, when [Fournette] didn’t participate in the OTAs, but then he shows up at the mandatory minicamp weighing damn near 260 [pounds],” Stroud said. His comments can be heard at the 19-minute mark.

Leonard Fournette's weight is overblown issue for Buccaneers (The Pewter Plank)

Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Leonard Fournette's weight is reportedly overblown. The only thing really overblown is this "issue" for the Buccaneers.

Fournette will slim down to the playing weight he needs to during training camp (they are in Florida after all), and this will become a non-issue. The thing is, while it’s true that Fournette just signed a contract extension and him showing up all ballooned up for minicamp isn’t a great look, it seemed like everything was resolved. When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers reported for minicamp back at the beginning of June, it was reported that Leonard Fournette was tipping the scales at upwards of 260 pounds and that the coaching staff was justifiably not happy.

Buccaneers running back Leonard Fournette is reportedly in poor shape leading up to training camp.

Hopefully, Lenny can get in shape in a hurry before the regular season begins or some of the other Bucs' running backs may start to creep into his touches. One would think that would make Fournette want to show why he is deserving of that contract. However, it seems that when Fournette arrived at mandatory minicamp he was extremely out of shape and that the Buccaneers' coaches were less than pleased that he let himself go.
