Pete Alonso was in the top four among derby contestants in this stat when we checked before his win in 2021, and second among the contestants when he won in 2019. It would give those kids out in the outfield a real workout.” Usually, it’s one of the favorites — in a three-year stretch heading into 2019, 65 percent of the matchups were won by the higher seed. Here’s the one that went the furthest. “He could really hit.” “Hyun-Jin Ryu always had good pop,” said Ross Stripling, who ended up in Toronto with his old teammate. “Absolutely I’d want in, I got some BP pop for sure,” said Cease, who relished the fact he wasn’t supposed to hear about it. “The only one that has a chance to beat me is Miles,” Wainwright asserted, “because he can go autopilot if the pitcher is throwing exactly in his spot. So if you throw it in that spot, he can go autopilot: homer, homer, homer, homer. “ Logan Webb has stupid pop.” And Ohtani for sure.” Would a couple rounds of a home run derby between pitchers scratch that itch?

He has 24 home runs heading into the break and has put on absolute clinics in his last two derby appearances. Jesse Yomtov: Pete Alonso – Chalk and deservedly so. He hit 74 home runs in last year's event at Coors Field and his 131 career derby homers are more than any player in history.

The T-Mobile Home Run Derby is happening tonight! The field features a downright electric mix of young and old, power and skill, past, present and future.
But this is his first Derby, and his first All-Star Game, and really his first everything. Seager got off to a slow start this year, but no one remembers that now: He’s got 21 homers and is on quite a roll. Ramírez has resisted being in the Derby in the past, but this could be the sort of high-profile event that may finally get the rest of the baseball world to realize just how great he truly is. And he’s been hitting the ball a lot harder in the days heading into the All-Star Game: He’s hot right now. Seager was the last addition to the Derby, his first since his Rookie of the Year campaign in 2016. His slugging percentage is lower than it has been during any season of his career, and he still might not be 100 percent recovered from the knee injury that cost him most of last season (and part of this one). Acuña is electric, but I’m not sure he’s a high-priority pick here. First off: It’s awesome that Rodríguez is a part of this. It’s awesome that he’s a part of this All-Star Game at all. In retrospect, it’s a travesty that Schwarber has only been in one of these. Was Alonso invented solely for the Home Run Derby? Mets fans who have been enjoying Alonso leading them to a first-place team at the All-Star break may disagree, but from the outside, Alonso has everything you’d want: Prodigious power, obviously, but also swagger, showmanship, consistency (you have to do it for three rounds after all) and a clear understanding of the moment. Schwarber made the finals in 2018, losing by one homer to current teammate Bryce Harper. But as good as that version of Schwarber was, this one is better. The field features a downright electric mix of young and old, power and skill, past, present and future.

But in the end, he will get respect for having pushed the top seed ... but not the W he desires. And the longest: Schwarber is going to crack a 522-foot home run. Gonzalez: I have him shocking everybody by defeating Schwarber, the NL's home run leader, in the first round. Gonzalez: Acuna is averaging 437 feet per home run this season, the longest in the majors. Schoenfield: It's the year of the Mariners! Rodriguez has been on fire, and he's not lacking in confidence. He's the most prolific home run hitter on the planet. With his victory over Seager, Rodriguez is the first Mariner to advance to the semifinals of the Derby since Ken Griffey Jr. in 1998. Soto has been scorching hot this month and will dethrone Pete Alonso in the finals. Gonzalez: Soto was not happy to be thrown into trade rumors right before the All-Star break, and this is the perfect place for the game's best pure hitter to channel his anger. Not for Julio Rodriguez. The 21-year-old phenom put together one of the most impressive rounds in Home Run Derby history, finishing with 32 home runs. He started out hitting a series of high fly balls that scraped over the fence, transitioned into some low screaming liners that cleared the fence, then starting bashing a few that cleared the whole dang stadium. Midway through his round he was in trouble, struggling to find that perfect launch angle and instead hitting low liners that were falling short of the warning track.

The oldest of those seven hitters, Ramírez, was only 8 years old when Pujols hit his first MLB home run in April 2001. He crushed 31 more home runs in Round 2 against the reigning champ Alonso, becoming the first hitter in Home Run Derby history to post back-to-back 30-homer rounds … and the first with multiple 30-homer rounds in one Derby … and the first with multiple 30-homer Derby rounds, period. Pujols entered the 2022 Derby with 71 career Derby homers, which was eighth all-time at the time. • Soto is the second Nationals star to win the Home Run Derby in the last five years. • Rodríguez, the Mariners rookie phenom, got the Derby started with 32 home runs, the second-most homers in a Derby first round. Soto became the second-youngest Derby champion … by a single day. And, ultimately, you had two of the sport's brightest and most engaging young stars, Julio Rodríguez and Juan Soto, duking it out in a dramatic final round.
Julio Rodríguez hit 81 homers, and Albert Pujols had a memorable moment, but Juan Soto took home the hardware.
Ridiculous effort tonight from the 21-year-old Rodríguez. He wasn't previously that well known, nationally, among casual fans, but that should start changing with tonight's Derby. He has 10 homers and has earned a minute of bonus time. As things are, though, Alonso remains one just four players, along with Griffey Jr., Prince Fielder and Yoenis Céspedes, to win multiple Derbies. Given how much Alonso seems to enjoy participating and how seriously he takes it ( deadlifts! Alonso won the 2019 Derby and then prevailed again last year. In defiance of those expectations, however, Pujols edged Schwarber and advanced past the first round. At 42 years and 183 days old, Albert Pujols was, by a substantial margin, the oldest Home Run Derby participant ever. Alonso had won the event in 2019 and 2021 (there was no Home Run Derby in 2020) and was looking to become the first player ever to win three Derbies in a row. He's now the second-youngest player ever to win the Derby, behind only Juan Gonzalez. Cardinals legend Albert Pujols stole the show earlier in the night. Rodríguez had a bit of a coming out party before running into Soto in the finals. It's the first Derby title for Soto, who has been the subject of trade rumors in recent days. Juan Soto, one of the best hitters in Major League Baseball, added to his already-lengthy resume on Monday night.
Pete Alonso and Kyle Schwarber are two of the top contenders in this year's home run hitting contest.

Juan Soto walked away as the 2022 MLB Home Run Derby champion, but who hit the longest homer of the contest at Dodger Stadium?
T-13. 458 feet: Kyle Schwarber, Juan Soto There were 10 home runs that traveled at least 460 feet, with Alonso and Soto accounting for seven of them. T-6. 470 feet: Kyle Schwarber, Juan Soto Miami Marlins outfielder Jesus Sanchez crushed a 494-foot homer at Coors Field back in May. Colorado Rockies All-Star C.J. Cron is the only other player with a 480-foot homer this season, hitting a 486-foot shot at Coors Field last month. Alonso was the only other slugger to go at least 480 yards deep, hitting a homer that exact distance. Rodriguez ended up with the most total home runs of all eight participants with 81, but he couldn't outdo Soto head-to-head.
