He tops out in the low-mid-90s, which caps his upside, but he's a low-risk pick. It's a great value pick, but if he moves off the position, Susac's value will go down, and the catching depth in Oakland makes that more likely. Philadelphia has recently bet on high-upside arms in the past like Mick Abel and Andrew Painter. Now they're adding a high-upside bat to the system. He has an advanced hit tool for a high schooler, and has plenty of speed for the position. His tools aren't loud, but it's a relatively low-risk profile. The Royals have a lot of their top prospects in the upper minors or already making an impact in the majors, and Cross shouldn't take long to join them. His fastball reaches the upper-90s, and his slider is a filthy out-pitch. The upside is there for Rocker, as he was considered a top-10 prospect a year ago, but there is more risk than several other players available on the board given the past injury concerns and occasional waning velocity. He has plenty of raw power, and his speed is among the best in the high-school class. The Orioles come away with a player that both has one of the highest floors and highest ceilings in the draft. Each year, evaluating teams' selections by teams can be a challenge for their fan bases. The next wave of baseball talent will be joining the professional ranks.

For one final year under this draft format, however, let’s dive into the picks. However, there are still 30 picks in the first round since the Mets have both the 11th and 14th overall picks — for not signing 10th overall pick Kumar Rocker last year, New York was given a compensatory selection in the 11th overall spot this year. The Dodgers are the only team without a first-rounder, as their top pick (originally 30th overall) was dropped 10 places to 40th overall (the first pick of the second round) as part of their punishment for exceeding the highest luxury-tax tier in 2021.
The 2022 MLB Draft got started Sunday night in Los Angeles. The three-day, 20-round process started with the Baltimore Orioles selecting high school ...
The latter is fine and allows him to leverage his aforementioned muscle. Johnson is going to hit, and hit a lot, and he's going to do it while displaying one of the best feels for the game in the class. If there are blemishes to his game, it's that he faced weak competition and that he's unlikely to become more than a second-division shortstop. He's not as promising behind the dish, but he's improved enough there for scouts to see him as a tolerable option to begin his career. It didn't help matters that he later fractured his foot and missed the rest of the campaign. He slid down boards because he started the season off with some of his worst games, and they just so happened to come against the best pitchers he faced all year. Scouts contend that he lacks the hands and the feet to be a tolerable defender anywhere on the diamond. That combination usually makes scouts cast doubt on someone's ability to remain at the six, though Lee's aforementioned wherewithal and the recent optimization of defensive positioning has them open to the idea that he at least starts his big-league career at shortstop. (This is where we note, to little surprise, that his father Eric played in the NFL.) Conversely, Green's critics say that his game needs a lot of refinement for him to max out his tools, and that his extreme swing-and-miss tendencies will cause him to deviate, from being a red-hot chili pepper to not, more frequently than John Frusciante. Jones might end up losing a little speed as a result, but he's believed to have the instincts and innate feel for the position that should enable his game to remain lush with secondary value. He's no longer pulling off pitches as frequently as he had in the past, and he's more open to using the whole field. Indeed, he has the kind of projectable frame and handspeed that should allow him to add muscle and power as he matures.
Who's eligible: The MLB draft has 20 rounds, but the Blue Jays will be able to draft 22 players due to those compensatory picks. The team got those picks when ...
They signed Austin Martin to a bonus of $7,000,825, well over the allotted slot of $6,180,000 for that pick. The only player I could see the Jays doing this for (at least to the extent of Martin) is with high school pitcher Dylan Lesko. For each of the Jays picks tonight, I’ll be writing an article about them. In the case of the Jays, they get an elevated bonus pool due to those two extra picks in the compensatory round. Only, you have to under slot other late round picks unless you want to lose a first round pick and get taxed. Unlike the NBA draft, the MLB draft has a bunch of rounds, and each pick in the first 10 rounds has a slot value. This was well below the allotted value of $410,100 for the pick. A team could go over the bonus pool limit. Most high school players are already committed to a university, which means they spend three seasons (sometimes two) before entering the draft. This isn’t the case with the MLB draft. If you’re drafted by an NHL or NBA team, you essentially don’t have a choice in the matter but to play for that team. The MLB draft has 20 rounds, but the Blue Jays will be able to draft 22 players due to those compensatory picks.
The Philadelphia Phillies hold the 17th overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, which kicks off on Sunday, July 17 at 7 p.m. EST.

With a 6'6", 234-pound frame, he has the potential to be a workhorse in the majors, though he's more floor than ceiling and likely fits best at the back of an MLB rotation. He has plus speed and great instincts in the outfield, and he has also been up to 95 mph off the mound, so he has plenty of arm strength. He is likely destined for center field defensively, and he's going to be a fascinating prospect to watch develop in the coming years. If he were a no-doubt shortstop, he would be the No. 1 player in this draft class, but an average arm and limited range likely mean a shift to second base. He has good bat-to-ball skills and uses his speed well, but he will need to refine his contact-oriented approach if he is going to be more than a slap-and-dash hitter. There are some things to smooth out in his delivery, but he's a good enough athlete to believe he can make the necessary adjustments. He has also been up to 93 mph on the mound as a two-way player, and that strong arm should help him stick at shortstop. Cross is a relatively safe pick with impact upside, and that's the type of player the Royals should be targeting at this stage in their rebuild. He threw a dud against Columbia (6.0 IP, 9 H, 6 ER) in his final start of the season, but there's a lot to like about his long-term upside as a potential workhorse starter with a high floor. The athleticism that made him a two-way contributor is apparent in his clean, repeatable mechanics, and his fastball-slider combination stacks up to any two-pitch mix in the class. Phillips could be a tough sign, but assuming they get it done, he could easily be the best of the three. He could be the next Pete Alonso or another in a long line of college sluggers with a similar profile who failed to make the leap to pro ball.

In addition, a player enrolled at a four-year college is not eligible until the end of his junior year. The value decreases to $2,486,800 by pick 30 and $807,200 by No. 80. His father was a seven-time All-Star and the 2007 NL batting champion. In contrast to other sports, baseball draft picks take time to reach the majors. The Orioles recovered from an 8-16 start to enter the All-Star break at 46-46, just 3 1/2 games back of a wild-card berth. Holliday, from Stillwater High in Oklahoma, is a left-handed hitter who is 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds.

Player: Cam Collier, 3B, Chipola (Fla.) College ( No. 8 prospect) Player: Justin Crawford, OF, Bishop Gorman (Nev.) HS ( No. 13 prospect) Uncle Mike was a Giants Minor Leaguer from 1974-75. This year’s Draft is filled with the sons of former MLB All-Stars, but Elijah’s father Eric was a standout in another sport. Drafted: No. 9 overall, Royals Uncle Terry was a first-round Draft pick of the Giants in 1974 and also played in the Brewers’ system. His father was a 10-time Gold Glove Award winner in center field and hit 434 home runs over a stellar 17-year Major League career. Player: Elijah Green, OF, IMG Academy ( No. 3 prospect) Player: Druw Jones, OF, Wesleyan (Ga.) HS ( No. 1 prospect) Drafted: No. 3 overall, Rangers Player: Jackson Holliday, SS, Stillwater (Olka.) HS ( No. 2 prospect) The pair, however, are far from the only players with a famous relative who will be picked this year.
The 2022 Major League Baseball draft kicked off Sunday night, with the Baltimore Orioles taking Jackson Holliday, a high school shortstop, with the No.
Grade: A Grade: A He flashed some loud stuff from the left side in the past, and he was announced as a two-way player, upping the intrigue level. He could've easily gone higher than this, in part because he should be one of the first pitchers in this class to reach The Show. Grade: A The Braves announced him as a right-handed pitcher, but will give him a chance as a two-way player. Grade: A He has a good feel for contact and top-notch speed. He has the best changeup in the class and a fastball with good spin. The Mets' interest in Williams was a poorly kept secret running up to the draft. Grade: A Hughes is a big, powerful righty who will need to work on his changeup in order to stick in a rotation. The upside here is a left-handed shortstop with a plus bat.

Though Rushing doesn't have the bat of his predecessor, Henry Davis, who went first overall to the Pirates in 2021, he has plus power and a ton of arm strength. That's a lot of pitchers taken early who have undergone a major procedure that would have scared teams away in the past. It was reported late Sunday that Rocker will sign an under-slot deal with the Rangers, but the draft position is closer to where Rocker expected he would be taken when he decided to stick with Vanderbilt rather than sign out of high school. When Rocker didn’t sign with the Mets in the 2021 MLB Draft, there was no indication of how high or low he might go in the 2022 draft. Lee had been mentioned at one point as a strong candidate to go first overall, and even was the Vegas betting favorite for a while. The Red Sox have a type of prospect, and it has worked for them in the past. Georgia Tech shortstop Chandler Simpson is the fastest player in the draft and has a promising hit tool, but he has next to no power and he might have to move off short. He would have been viewed as a risky gamble in the first round, but after taking a player with a standout hit tool early, Baltimore could afford to use this pick on the 6-4, 206-pound Beavers in hopes he improves his swing and taps into his five-tool potential. New York already boasted one of the best farm systems in baseball with big names like Francisco Alvarez, Brett Baty, Mark Vientos and Ronny Mauricio. It built on that by taking one of the best players available at each spot and coming away with a strong early crop. With the 33rd pick (the first pick of Competitive Balance Round A), Baltimore selected Cal outfielder Dylan Beavers. He has power and speed upside but a questionable hit tool. Of course, the Orioles got their guy at 1/1 in five-tool, second-generation star Jackson Holliday, who has the potential to be a middle-of-the-order hitter with power and speed who can stick up the middle at shortstop. Yes, the team that picked first overall can be considered one of the winners of the draft.
Similar to the baseball season itself, evaluating the MLB draft requires a marathon mentality, not a sprint. Players drafted this weekend will disappear into ...
That's the fewest pitchers taken in the first round this century. Crawford is recovering from Tommy John surgery and threw only eight innings in college, but he throws 99 mph from the left side, and he's shown some promise with the bat as well. It was a poor pitching class, and as a result, only seven pitchers were selected in the first round, nine if you include No. 20 pick Owen Murphy and No. 30 pick Reggie Crawford, two two-way players. It's the first time since 1971 a college player was not taken in the top five picks. The Oklahoma ace returned from Tommy John surgery in late March and didn't really hit his stride until June, when he was dominant during the Sooners' run to the College World Series Finals. Horton's impressive postseason showing landed him with the Cubs as the No. 7 pick. He was far and away the biggest draft riser this spring. All told, 15 four-year college kids were taken in the first round, the fewest since 2018. Rocker going where he did was a big surprise, he was expected to go in the back half of the first round somewhere, but good for him. Cincinnati landed Collier with the No. 18 pick even though he was a projected top-10 pick all spring, and sometimes even a projected top-five pick. A total of four sons of big leaguers were drafted in the first round: A year ago Rocker, the former Vanderbilt ace, was the No. 10 pick in the draft, but the Mets did not sign him because something in his physical scared them. The 2022 MLB amateur draft began with the first 80 selections Sunday night.

Any bonus greater than $125,000 for a player taken after the 10th round is also applied to the bonus pool total. Day 2 will conclude at the end of the 10th round, marked by the 316th overall selection from the Giants. Complete Draft order » That figure rose to as high as 95 this past season, providing a much better complemnt to his signature pitch, a changeup that he can both throw for strikes and get hitters to chase. A star football player who led his team to its first Georgia state 7-A championship last fall, Horn missed some time this spring after tearing the meniscus in his left knee earlier in the year. The 17-year-old has an advanced approach offensively and figures to be a solid contributor on both sides of the ball. Hubbart has a sharp curve, an improved slider and a strong change to complement his heater. The key for Vrieling will be to harness his control, which has proven to be an issue from time to time. Scouts see 20-homer capability once he adds some muscle to his frame. Cannon enjoyed a strong Cape Cod League stint in 2021 following an uneven year with the Bulldogs. An improved cutter and slider in addition to his heavy 92-96 mph heater produced better results in 2022. His defensive skills don't quite measure up to his offensive prowess, making his status as a catcher a question mark moving forward. Topping out at 100 mph and sitting consistently in the 94-97 mph range, the 19-year-old went 9-0 with an 0.41 ERA and 115 strikeouts in 58 innings, and he threw three no-hitters. If they're drafted on Day 2, especially in the early rounds, that's usually an indication that they'll turn pro.
