Major League Baseball's 2022 amateur draft got started Sunday night in Los Angeles. The Baltimore Orioles hold the No. 1 pick for the third time in ...
CBS Sports recently highlighted a number of players who we deem to be "polarizing," meaning evaluators differ in where they see said player going. Some scouts blamed the pandemic and the lack of "live innings" pitchers were able to accumulate during the course of the 2020 calendar year. His arsenal is all about power, including a high-spin fastball that can touch into the upper-90s and a slider that was clocked as high as 90 during that aforementioned start. One of the draft's invisible hands, so to speak, is the concept of signability -- or, basically, how likely a player is to put pen to paper. He recently made a series of starts with an independent league team, showing the kind of stuff that figures to make him a first-round pick again. Clearly Johnson is one of the best prospects available. Our own Mike Axisa's final mock draft had the Orioles going with prep second baseman Termarr Johnson. He slipped to No. 4 in our final rankings. Those savings are then redistributed throughout the rest of their class, maximizing their overall talent accumulation. - Chicago Cubs - Texas Rangers From there, rounds 3-10 will occur on Monday afternoon, with the rest of the class getting squared away on Tuesday afternoon.
LOS ANGELES -- Baltimore chose shortstop Jackson Holliday, a son of former batting champion Matt Holliday, with the top pick in baseball's amateur draft on ...
In addition, a player enrolled at a four-year college is not eligible until the end of his junior year. The value decreases to $2,486,800 by pick 30 and $807,200 by No. 80. His father was a seven-time All-Star and the 2007 NL batting champion. In contrast to other sports, baseball draft picks take time to reach the majors. The Orioles recovered from an 8-16 start to enter the All-Star break at 46-46, just 3 1/2 games back of a wild-card berth. Holliday, from Stillwater High in Oklahoma, is a left-handed hitter who is 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds.

This year marks the fourth straight season where Baltimore had a top-five pick, including their second No. 1 overall pick. Since Baltimore had the worst 2020 record, they “won” the tiebreaker over Arizona for the No. 1 pick. Now that he is officially an MLB draft pick, Holliday joins a growing list of second-generation players to enter the league.

The son of former big leaguer Lou Collier, Cam was slated to be in the class of 2023, but he reclassified and headed to Chipola Junior College instead of his junior year of high school, making him one of the youngest players (17) in this Draft class. That speed should enable him to be a basestealing threat throughout his career, and he has a good chance to stay in center field, because the one tool he has better than his dad is his throwing arm. An ultra-polished high school arm, he has a 92-97 mph fastball and one of the best high school changeups in years. He’s one of the best hitters in the high school class with a quick right-handed stroke and a nice feel for the barrel. He has a strong arm at shortstop and his instincts may allow him to remain in the position, though he could wind up as an offensive second baseman. He set a school record with 26 homers this spring and has good feel for the barrel using the whole field, while letting his power come naturally. He got tired near the end of the season as he surpassed his career-high innings total, but he’s a rare college arm with some ceiling and a potential three-pitch mix to go along with a prototypical starting pitcher build. Even if he eventually slides to a corner, he has the offensive profile to fit there as well. Yes, he’s probably a second baseman as a pro despite being listed as a shortstop now, but if he produces along the lines of Robinson Canó -- and he’s capable -- that works out great for Pittsburgh. – Callis More > The Marlins got the best combination of hitting ability, power and plate discipline in college baseball with Berry. A comp I heard that I like is that he’s a switch-hitting version of White Sox outfielder Andrew Vaughn, who went No. 3 overall in 2019 out of Cal. There are some questions about his defensive home, but to his credit, he wants to work to stay at third base. There were some concerns with swing and miss in his offensive game last summer, but he answered them enough this summer at IMG Academy to land in the top five. Holliday is the best combination of hitting ability and ceiling in this Draft, and a great fit for a strong Orioles farm system.
The future looks a bit brighter in Baltimore with Jackson Holliday kicking off the 2022 MLB draft. Follow along for every pick in Round 1.

He tops out in the low-mid-90s, which caps his upside, but he's a low-risk pick. It's a great value pick, but if he moves off the position, Susac's value will go down, and the catching depth in Oakland makes that more likely. Philadelphia has recently bet on high-upside arms in the past like Mick Abel and Andrew Painter. Now they're adding a high-upside bat to the system. He has an advanced hit tool for a high schooler, and has plenty of speed for the position. His tools aren't loud, but it's a relatively low-risk profile. The Royals have a lot of their top prospects in the upper minors or already making an impact in the majors, and Cross shouldn't take long to join them. His fastball reaches the upper-90s, and his slider is a filthy out-pitch. The upside is there for Rocker, as he was considered a top-10 prospect a year ago, but there is more risk than several other players available on the board given the past injury concerns and occasional waning velocity. He has plenty of raw power, and his speed is among the best in the high-school class. The Orioles come away with a player that both has one of the highest floors and highest ceilings in the draft. Each year, evaluating teams' selections by teams can be a challenge for their fan bases. The next wave of baseball talent will be joining the professional ranks.
The MLB draft begins at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN, with the Baltimore Orioles selecting No. 1 overall. Follow along for pick-by-pick coverage.
-- Mullen Why the Athletics took him here: A draft-eligible sophomore, Susac hit .351 in his two seasons at Arizona and has the defensive chops to remain behind the plate. At 17 years old, Collier is the youngest top prospect in this draft and he has already proven his ability to hold his own against hitters three-to-four years older than him -- first at Juco powerhouse Chipola and then this summer in the Cape Cod League. -- Mullen The big question for Crawford is whether he'll hit enough to get to his raw power in games, but there are few players in this class with more upside than the Nevada prep who played at the same high school that produced Joey Gallo and Yankees first-round pick Austin Wells. Why the Tigers took him here: We're at a point in the draft where college hitters are the most available group and the Tigers have a history of liking players who have a history of big-conference performance with their early picks. Why the Mets took him here: After going with a polished college prospect in Parada with the No. 11 overall pick, they switched gears and are betting big on upside here. Why the Royals took him here: Drafting in the top 10 for the fourth straight season, the Royals had gone high school position player ( Bobby Witt Jr.), college pitcher (Asa Lacy), high school pitcher (Frank Mozzicato) and now go with a college position player. Who is Jung? The younger brother of Rangers top prospect Josh, who also starred at Texas Tech, Jace has a similar draft profile: strong build, excellent college stats, some untapped power -- and questions about his defensive future. Who is Johnson? It's rare to see a prep likely second baseman go this high on draft night, but Johnson has steadily ranked near the top of this class because of his elite hit tool. Why the Rangers took him here: In what will be the biggest shocker of the night, the Rangers stun everyone with the former Vanderbilt star, a player not projected to go until perhaps 15th at the earliest -- and now he'll join his former Vandy teammate Jack Leiter in the Rangers system. Arizona is getting a player with 30/30 potential at the plate and an elite defender at a premium position. Why the Diamondbacks took him here: The Diamondbacks have to be ecstatic to see the consensus No. 1 player in this draft class fall into their laps with the No. 2 pick.
With their top pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, the Nationals selected outfielder Elijah Green out of IMG Academy.
He is ranked by Perfect Game as the top high school prospect in the 2022 First-Year Player Draft, by Baseball America as the No. 2 high school prospect and MLBPipeline.com as the No. 3 high school prospect. An 18-year-old outfielder is likely not going to impact the major leagues for a while, but do you agree with the Nationals taking the top pick on their draft board as they always do? “The 6-foot-4, 225-pound, right-handed hitting outfielder is ranked by MLBPipeline.com as the No. 3 prospect in the 2022 First-Year Player Draft and by Baseball America as the No. 5 draft prospect. What do you think about the Nationals’ top pick? “We find a comfort-level with the player,” Kline explained. With the No. 5 overall pick in this year’s draft, the Nationals selected outfielder Elijah Green, an 18-year-old, 6’3’’, 225 lb outfielder who was ranked by MLB Pipeline’s scouts as the No. 3 overall prospect on their list and the second-highest ranked outfield bat.

For one final year under this draft format, however, let’s dive into the picks. However, there are still 30 picks in the first round since the Mets have both the 11th and 14th overall picks — for not signing 10th overall pick Kumar Rocker last year, New York was given a compensatory selection in the 11th overall spot this year. The Dodgers are the only team without a first-rounder, as their top pick (originally 30th overall) was dropped 10 places to 40th overall (the first pick of the second round) as part of their punishment for exceeding the highest luxury-tax tier in 2021.

They signed Austin Martin to a bonus of $7,000,825, well over the allotted slot of $6,180,000 for that pick. The only player I could see the Jays doing this for (at least to the extent of Martin) is with high school pitcher Dylan Lesko. For each of the Jays picks tonight, I’ll be writing an article about them. In the case of the Jays, they get an elevated bonus pool due to those two extra picks in the compensatory round. Only, you have to under slot other late round picks unless you want to lose a first round pick and get taxed. Unlike the NBA draft, the MLB draft has a bunch of rounds, and each pick in the first 10 rounds has a slot value. This was well below the allotted value of $410,100 for the pick. A team could go over the bonus pool limit. Most high school players are already committed to a university, which means they spend three seasons (sometimes two) before entering the draft. This isn’t the case with the MLB draft. If you’re drafted by an NHL or NBA team, you essentially don’t have a choice in the matter but to play for that team. The MLB draft has 20 rounds, but the Blue Jays will be able to draft 22 players due to those compensatory picks.

He's an impressive two-way player who has some Jack Leiter to him on the mound:— R.J. Anderson (@r_j_anderson) https://t.co/XJrcrHNhVA July 18, 2022 The Braves also took Spencer Schwellenbach, a two-way player, last summer; maybe Murphy and him can start a club, or something. The Mariners hit big with Harry Ford last year and went back to the high school hitter well this year. The case can be made Barriera was the best healthy pitching prospect in the draft class. The big question evaluators have about him is how much power he'll hit for as he matures. Jones is a boom or bust kid with big upside, but also some things in his swing that need to be cleaned up. The Brewers lean heavily on their analytics model (like many other teams) and Brown is a model darling thanks to his contact rates and sneaky great exit velocities. He's huge (6-foot-7) with enormous power, and he's a great athlete. The Astros used their first first-round pick in years on Tennessee outfielder Drew Gilbert. He's a high-energy outfielder who should stick in center field. He has arguably the most raw power in the draft class, though basically all his value is going to come from his bat because he's a poor defender, so he has to hit. The draft order, live stream info and eight key questions about the draft can be found here. The selection process started with the Baltimore Orioles taking Jackson Holliday, a high school shortstop, with the No. 1 overall pick.

He’s a plus runner with the footwork and arm to stay at shortstop, so he has a fairly high floor – and even with the noisy approach, he has hit, .330/.460/.544 this year for Coastal with more walks than strikeouts. I don’t think Spencer Jones is Aaron Judge – he doesn’t have the same kind of selectivity or ball/strike recognition, but he does make extremely hard contact, and has more raw power than his collegiate homer totals indicate, and as a former two-way player before Tommy John surgery he’s a good athlete for his size. Brown is a toolsy shortstop with running speed and quick wrists, producing in college and on the Cape despite a very unusual, noisy approach that makes it hard for him to get his bat to the zone on time. The Brewers go for athleticism again in the first round; they’ve taken speedy guys in the first round three straight years now, with Garrett Mitchell, Sal Frelick, and now Eric Brown, a fleet-footed shortstop who has very quick wrists and is able to hit for contact and some power even with a very noisy approach. As is, I think he’s a regular in center, but if the Astros can find a way to get him to more power – which would include just getting some more muscle on him – he could be more than that. Gilbert was a two-way prospect out of a Minnesota high school but had a strong commitment to Tennessee, so he wasn’t drafted until the hometown Twins took him in the 35th round in 2019. But even with the athleticism of the typical two-way player, how can you project him to start with just a huge fastball and very little track record? He’s pitched just 8 innings for the Huskies, plus 8.1 more in two different summer leagues, so this is a huge bet on potential because we have no real idea what he is right now, even if he comes back completely healthy. He does have good bat speed and is athletic enough that he might end up a plus defender in right, although the odds are against him staying in center. He makes a sharp move down and slightly back when he begins his swing, and whether you want to call it a hitch or not, it’s not helping him with timing, leading to trouble with breaking stuff and a lot of groundballs because his hands are moving upwards and he gets on top of the ball. Landon Sims might have been the unluckiest player in this draft class – just as he seemed to be rising towards a top-10 selection, his elbow blew out, and with it went his chances of going in the first round and a lot of the sentiment that he could be a starter. As a reliever, he should rip through the low minors, and he’s shown he can be effective in multi-inning stints without losing his stuff.

Pittsburgh used the fourth pick on second baseman Termarr Johnson of Mays High in Georgia, a product of baseball's Reviving Baseball in the Inner Cities program. In contrast to other sports, baseball draft picks take time to reach the majors. Taken in the 11th round and 321st overall, he debuted this May 13. The six-foot-two, 180-pound Barriera is a left-handed pitcher who plays varsity ball at American Heritage School in Plantation, Fla. Barriera regularly touches 96 miles per hour on the radar gun and has been up to 98-99. The Orioles recovered from an 8-16 start to enter the All-Star break at 46-46, just 3 1/2 games back of a wild-card berth. “I remember being in the clubhouse ever since he got to St Louis,” Jackson said. Rocker, a 22-year-old from Georgia, failed to sign last year after the Mets became concerned over his physical. “It was one of those moments that you’ll remember forever,” Druw said. “We're probably almost exactly the same,” Druw said. Texas used the third pick on Kumar Rocker, a 6-foot-5 right-hander who failed to sign with the New York Mets after being selected 10th overall last year. Daniel Susac, a University of Arizona catcher who is a brother of former big leaguer Andrew Susac, was picked 19th by Oakland. “It’s like a video game, honestly,” Holliday said.

Crawford is one of the hardest-throwing lefties in the draft with a fastball that can hit triple digits and a slider that hits the mid-80s. Gilbert is the more polished of the two Tennessee outfielders expected to be first-rounders, with a plus hit tool, plus speed and defense to stick in center field. The selection of Murphy this early feels like a money-saving pick by the Braves. Murphy has more polish than most high-school arms, but his arsenal doesn't hold up against other younger arms still on the board. Susac is the second-best catching prospect in the class behind Parada with a well-rounded bat that should hit for average and power. Philadelphia has recently bet on high-upside arms in the past like Mick Abel and Andrew Painter. Now they're adding a high-upside bat to the system. He has an advanced hit tool for a high schooler and has plenty of speed for the position. Los Angeles passed on some players with higher upside, but he's still a strong addition to the farm system. The Royals have a lot of their top prospects in the upper minors or already making an impact in the majors, and Cross shouldn't take long to join them. He also offers a solid curveball and a serviceable changeup. His fastball reaches the upper 90s and his slider is a filthy out-pitch. He has plenty of raw power and his speed is among the best in the high-school class. Each year, evaluating teams' selections can be a challenge for their fan bases.

Why you'll know him: One of the top prospects in the draft, Green makes loud contract, drives balls to all fields, hits dingers out of the park, runs at an elite level and covers a lot of grass in the outfield, although scouts wonder about the swing and miss in his game. Why you'll know him: Collier ranks as one of the top prospects in the draft, highlighted by his outstanding bat speed and his bat-to-ball skills while hitting the ball to all fields. Why you know his dad: Dayton Moore started working in Major League Baseball as a scout for the Atlanta Braves in 1994. Why you know his dad: Lou Collier played in the major leagues from 1997 through 2004 after being selected in the 31st round of the 1992 MLB draft. Why you know his dad: Carl Crawford played in four All-Star games from 2002 through 2016 with a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger in 2010, leading the league in stolen bases four times. After his career in the major leagues, Collier played two years in the Korean Baseball Organization, in 2005 with the LG Twins and in 2006 with the Hanwha Eagles. Sabathia went to six All-Star games, won a Cy Young Award in 2007 and won the World Series with the Yankees in 2009 while becoming the 17th pitcher and third lefty in baseball history to reach 3,000 strikeouts. Why you know his dad: Andruw Jones was one of the best defensive outfielders in baseball history, earning five All-Star appearances, 10 Gold Gloves and a Silver Slugger award. Holliday broke J.T. Realmuto's national high school record for hits in a season with 89 in 41 games while batting .685/.749/1.392, showing an advanced approach at the plate and a high baseball IQ. He earned a scholarship to Oklahoma State, where his dad is a volunteer assistant coach. Why you'll know him: Baker first became known to baseball fans during the 2002 World Series, when he served as a bat boy for the Giants. On a run-scoring play in Game 5, first baseman JT Snow swept the three-year-old Baker off his feet to prevent him from getting trampled. While Jones has an opportunity to play baseball at Vanderbilt, he likely won't play a game in Nashville after he's selected among the top picks in this year's MLB draft. Here's a quick overview of who's who in the draft, the Futures Game and the All-Star Game.
With the 23rd overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, the Toronto Blue Jays selected pitcher Brandon Barriera.
The Blue Jays will announce four picks in the first two rounds of the draft live from Los Angeles on Sunday, with picks at No. 60, 77, and 78 overall after the first-round pick. "Up to the high-90s from the left side as a high schooler, it's clear why Barriera could be one of the first two or three pitchers taken on draft day. Barriera was the first of four Toronto picks on the opening night of the 2022 selection show.

That's the fewest pitchers taken in the first round this century. Crawford is recovering from Tommy John surgery and threw only eight innings in college, but he throws 99 mph from the left side, and he's shown some promise with the bat as well. It was a poor pitching class, and as a result, only seven pitchers were selected in the first round, nine if you include No. 20 pick Owen Murphy and No. 30 pick Reggie Crawford, two two-way players. It's the first time since 1971 a college player was not taken in the top five picks. The Oklahoma ace returned from Tommy John surgery in late March and didn't really hit his stride until June, when he was dominant during the Sooners' run to the College World Series Finals. Horton's impressive postseason showing landed him with the Cubs as the No. 7 pick. He was far and away the biggest draft riser this spring. All told, 15 four-year college kids were taken in the first round, the fewest since 2018. Rocker going where he did was a big surprise, he was expected to go in the back half of the first round somewhere, but good for him. Cincinnati landed Collier with the No. 18 pick even though he was a projected top-10 pick all spring, and sometimes even a projected top-five pick. A total of four sons of big leaguers were drafted in the first round: A year ago Rocker, the former Vanderbilt ace, was the No. 10 pick in the draft, but the Mets did not sign him because something in his physical scared them. The 2022 MLB amateur draft began with the first 80 selections Sunday night.

The latter is fine and allows him to leverage his aforementioned muscle. Johnson is going to hit, and hit a lot, and he's going to do it while displaying one of the best feels for the game in the class. If there are blemishes to his game, it's that he faced weak competition and that he's unlikely to become more than a second-division shortstop. He's not as promising behind the dish, but he's improved enough there for scouts to see him as a tolerable option to begin his career. It didn't help matters that he later fractured his foot and missed the rest of the campaign. He slid down boards because he started the season off with some of his worst games, and they just so happened to come against the best pitchers he faced all year. Scouts contend that he lacks the hands and the feet to be a tolerable defender anywhere on the diamond. That combination usually makes scouts cast doubt on someone's ability to remain at the six, though Lee's aforementioned wherewithal and the recent optimization of defensive positioning has them open to the idea that he at least starts his big-league career at shortstop. (This is where we note, to little surprise, that his father Eric played in the NFL.) Conversely, Green's critics say that his game needs a lot of refinement for him to max out his tools, and that his extreme swing-and-miss tendencies will cause him to deviate, from being a red-hot chili pepper to not, more frequently than John Frusciante. Jones might end up losing a little speed as a result, but he's believed to have the instincts and innate feel for the position that should enable his game to remain lush with secondary value. He's no longer pulling off pitches as frequently as he had in the past, and he's more open to using the whole field. Indeed, he has the kind of projectable frame and handspeed that should allow him to add muscle and power as he matures.
The 2022 Major League Baseball draft kicked off Sunday night, with the Baltimore Orioles taking Jackson Holliday, a high school shortstop, with the No.
Grade: A Grade: A He flashed some loud stuff from the left side in the past, and he was announced as a two-way player, upping the intrigue level. He could've easily gone higher than this, in part because he should be one of the first pitchers in this class to reach The Show. Grade: A The Braves announced him as a right-handed pitcher, but will give him a chance as a two-way player. Grade: A He has a good feel for contact and top-notch speed. He has the best changeup in the class and a fastball with good spin. The Mets' interest in Williams was a poorly kept secret running up to the draft. Grade: A Hughes is a big, powerful righty who will need to work on his changeup in order to stick in a rotation. The upside here is a left-handed shortstop with a plus bat.
LOS ANGELES — The Toronto Blue Jays selected 18-year-old Brandon Barriera of Hollywood, Fla., on Sunday with their first pick, and 23rd overall, ...
The 21-year-old Doughty was Louisiana high school player of the year in 2019. “A tough decision,” Orioles general manager Mike Elias said. The best-case scenario would be third base. The six-foot-two, 180-pound Barriera is a left-handed pitcher who plays varsity ball at American Heritage School in Plantation, Fla. Barriera regularly touches 96 miles per hour on the radar gun and has been up to 98-99. He features an electric four-pitch mix -- fastball, changeup, curveball and slider. The Toronto Blue Jays selected 18-year-old Brandon Barriera of Hollywood, Fla., on Sunday with their first pick, and 23rd overall, in Major League Baseball's first-year player draft.
As the highest selection since Matt Barnes in 2011, Reggie Crawford has been selected by San Francisco in the 2022 MLB Draft as the No. 30 overall pick ...
Crawford, with true size, at 6-foot-4, 235 pounds, has the potential to be a two-way player, with above-average raw power and a fastball that has touched 99 mph from the left side. The 2021 campaign saw Crawford break out and become a legitimate first-round candidate. Homers and RBI also topped the Big East, helping earn second-team all-conference honors. As a result, he has risk of becoming a reliever, which is a much less desirable outcome for a pitcher. The Giants organization has a history of taking UConn pitchers, as the team selected Pat Ruotolo and John Russell in 2016 and 2017, respectively. The slot value of this pick is $2.49 million.

When Rocker didn’t sign with the Mets in the 2021 MLB Draft, there was no indication of how high or low he might go in the 2022 draft. Lee had been mentioned at one point as a strong candidate to go first overall, and even was the Vegas betting favorite for a while. The Red Sox have a type of prospect, and it has worked for them in the past. Georgia Tech shortstop Chandler Simpson is the fastest player in the draft and has a promising hit tool, but he has next to no power and he might have to move off short. He would have been viewed as a risky gamble in the first round, but after taking a player with a standout hit tool early, Baltimore could afford to use this pick on the 6-4, 206-pound Beavers in hopes he improves his swing and taps into his five-tool potential. New York already boasted one of the best farm systems in baseball with big names like Francisco Alvarez, Brett Baty, Mark Vientos and Ronny Mauricio. It built on that by taking one of the best players available at each spot and coming away with a strong early crop.

Cermak was also MVC Scholar-Athlete First-Team and a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree with his 3.77 GPA in Recreation Management. Holm: "What a moment for Ryan. He came in and worked his butt off from day one. Cermak was picked in the Competitive Balance Round B of Round 2.

The last time they went with a prep arm early was Riley Pint at No. 4 in 2016, and he's still struggling to progress. Cade Horton, the top college pitcher in the class, according to MLB Pipeline, was already off the board. Landing outfielder Sterlin Thompson, who fell into their lap at No. 31, was a nice way to leverage one of their extra picks. The first 80 picks of the 2022 MLB Draft are complete. Eighty picks were made on Day 1, which is probably too many to cram into the first-day broadcast. That means prep pitchers with higher ceilings like Porter, Dylan Lesko, Brandon Barriera, Robby Snelling, and Jackson Ferris - who were all ranked higher than Hughes - should've got a more serious look from Colorado. By calling Jackson Holliday's name first overall, the Baltimore Orioles became the first team to select a son of a former big leaguer at No. 1 since the Seattle Mariners drafted Ken Griffey Jr. in 1987. To put things into perspective, Hunter Greene is now an impact starter for the Reds and is merely three months older than Rocker. The Rangers come out of this as winners as well, reportedly landing Rocker on an under-slot deal. This is the first year in recent memory that fewer than 10 hurlers went in the opening round, with nine getting selected. Zigging while other teams are zagging is usually something to applaud - especially in baseball. It didn't stop there, though, as the Arizona Diamondbacks landed Druw Jones, son of five-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner Andruw, at No. 2.
The Toronto Blue Jays selected left-handed pitcher Brandon Barriera with the 23rd-overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft on Sunday.
"He's the best pitcher we've ever had come through here," American Heritage head coach Mike Macey said of Barriera ahead of the draft. Barriera was selected out of American Heritage School in Florida and was the 15th ranked prospect by MLB Pipeline heading into the draft. He's the only pitcher that we've ever had you'd consider to be a first-round guy. "Looking at those 22 teams before me, they are going to regret this and I'll become the best pitcher in MLB." He's got the most hype around him." The Toronto Blue Jays selected left-handed pitcher Brandon Barriera with the 23rd-overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft on Sunday.

The Rockies took one of the better hitters in the college class at No. 31 in Sterlin Thompson, who turned 21 just a few weeks ago, making him a draft-eligible sophomore. The Orioles recovered from an 8-16 start to enter the all-star break at 46-46, just 3 1/2 games back of a wild-card berth. "I remember being in the clubhouse ever since he got to St Louis," Jackson said. Rocker, a 22-year-old from Georgia, failed to sign last year after the Mets became concerned over his physical. "It was one of those moments that you'll remember forever," Druw said. "We're probably almost exactly the same," Druw said. Daniel Susac, a University of Arizona catcher who is a brother of former big leaguer Andrew Susac, was picked 19th by Oakland. Texas used the third pick on Kumar Rocker, a 6-foot-5 right-hander who failed to sign with the New York Mets after being selected 10th overall last year. Justin Crawford, a son of four-time all-star Carl Crawford, was taken by Philadelphia at No. 17. "Like every video game you play, you're the first pick."
The Arizona Diamondbacks then took high school outfielder Druw Jones (Andruw's son) with the No. 2 pick. Kumar Rocker (Rangers), Termarr Johnson (Pirates) and ...
He generates good velocity on his heater, yet the shape of the offering plays into the zone and may cause it to be less effective than the sum of its parts. Hjerpe (that's "jerp-ee," for those wondering) pounds the zone and he should be able to ascend the ladder quickly. Stuff-wise, he relies on a low-to-mid-90s fastball that downright bumfuzzles hitters thanks to the marriage between its rise and his flat vertical approach angle. If there are blemishes to his game, it's that he faced weak competition and that he's unlikely to become more than a second-division shortstop. Johnson is going to hit, and hit a lot, and he's going to do it while displaying one of the best feels for the game in the class. Justin Crawford, OF, Bishop Gorman HS (NV): Yet another draftee with a big-league father, Crawford's father Carl played in the majors for more than a decade and made four All-Star teams along the way. He's not as promising behind the dish, but he's improved enough there for scouts to see him as a tolerable option to begin his career. Scouts contend that he lacks the hands and the feet to be a tolerable defender anywhere on the diamond. That combination usually makes scouts cast doubt on someone's ability to remain at the six, though Lee's aforementioned wherewithal and the recent optimization of defensive positioning has them open to the idea that he at least starts his big-league career at shortstop. Jones might end up losing a little speed as a result, but he's believed to have the instincts and innate feel for the position that should enable his game to remain lush with secondary value. He's no longer pulling off pitches as frequently as he had in the past, and he's more open to using the whole field.

He was announced as a pitcher by the Rockies, but he could keep the bat in his back pocket as he enters the pros. Pick 15 (241st overall): Guardians, Jackson Humphries, LHP, Fuquay-Varina (N.C.) HS ( No. 128): Humphries will turn 18 on Wednesday, making him one of the youngest pitchers in this class, and he may have only slipped because his stuff wasn’t quite as sharp in the spring. Pick 22 (218th overall): Blue Jays, Peyton Williams, 1B, Iowa: First-base-only types need to show power, and Williams has the easy plus-plus raw pop to fit the profile. He could be in for a swing overhaul in the Cincy system. He has plus raw power as a switch-hitter, thanks to promising strength and bat speed, and could be the next young position player to pop in the Los Angeles pipeline. Pick 7 (143rd overall): Cubs, Brandon Birdsell, RHP, Texas Tech ( No. 101): It isn’t often you find two plus pitches in the fifth round, but the Cubs seem to have done that here. The 6-foot-2 left-hander throws in the mid-90s with good riding life – a big reason why he throws the heater 80% of the time – and his 2-to-7 breaking ball keeps hitters off balance too. Pick 11 (147th overall): Tigers, Luke Gold, INF, Boston College ( No. 87): The Eagles had a solid group of 2021 Draft picks in Sal Frelick (first round) and Cody Morisette (second round), and Gold leads the group this summer. Pick 20 (100th overall): Yankees, Trystan Vrieling, RHP, Gonzaga ( No. 71): Gabriel Hughes went 10th overall on Day 1, and Vierling gives the Bulldogs' pitching staff another arm in the top three rounds. Pick 27 (133rd overall): Astros, Trey Dombroski III, LHP, Monmouth ( No. 111): Houston may have picked up the best control in the entire Draft by taking the Monmouth southpaw. Pick 1 (81st overall), Orioles: Nolan McLean, 3B/RHP, Oklahoma State (Ranked No. 115 on MLB Pipeline's Draft Prospects list): Baltimore went with a legit two-way talent to begin the third round. Pick 14 (94th overall): Reds: Bryce Hubbart, LHP, Florida State ( No. 72): Hubbart tied for the Cape Cod League in strikeouts last summer, pushing up Draft boards heading into 2022.
While the Blue Jays are in the middle of a tightly packed AL East race, their scouting department is focused on Toronto's future. The 2022 MLB Draft is here ...
The Blue Jays have a pick in every round and also own two compensation picks after the second round. In fact, general manager Ross Atkins has traded away both the team's 2020 and 2021 first-round picks. The 2022 MLB Draft is here and Toronto needs to replenish its prospect pool.
A little bit about the Blue Jays 2022 day one draft picks Brandon Barriera, Josh Kasevich, Tucker Toman, and Cade Doughty.
He's the son of long-time college coach Jim Toman, and is currently committed to play at LSU next year. "We really wanted to go to the Blue Jays," Toman told Lou Bezjak after the selection. "I love the Blue Jays and we stuck around for them. Here's a quick breakdown of what Toronto got with its first four selections in the 2022 MLB Draft: There was some significant evaluation variance on Toman ahead of the draft, but the 18-year-old hitter was widely seen as one of the top high school sluggers available. "It was fun coming into today with four picks," Farrell said.
The 2022 MLB Draft continued Monday with Rounds 3-10; catch up with our list of every pick.
Hjerpe (that's "jerp-ee," for those wondering) pounds the zone and he should be able to ascend the ladder quickly. He's huge (6-foot-7) with enormous power, and he's a great athlete. Cole Young, SS, North Allegheny HS (PA): Young is a well-rounded player who lacks both a carrying tool and an obvious flaw. Jett Williams, SS, Rockwall-Heath HS (TX): Williams, a Mississippi State commit, has more helium than most other prospects in the draft. Justin Crawford, OF, Bishop Gorman HS (NV): Yet another draftee with a big-league father, Crawford's father Carl played in the majors for more than a decade and made four All-Star teams along the way. Owen Murphy, RHP/INF, Riverside-Brookfield HS (IL): Shohei Ohtani's success has caused teams to think new thoughts about the viability of two-way players, but our guess is Murphy will store away his bat after he turns pro. There is some relief risk here should his past wildness return (he had previously walked a batter every other inning in his collegiate career) or if he can't improve his changeup. Elijah Green, OF, IMG Academy (FL): Green is a fascinating and polarizing prospect, a walking example of bimodal distribution who seems to inspire forecasts invoking only his left- and right-tail outcomes. Johnson is going to hit, and hit a lot, and he's going to do it while displaying one of the best feels for the game in the class. Kumar Rocker (Rangers), Termarr Johnson (Pirates) and Elijah Green (Nationals) rounded out the top five. The three-day selection process started Sunday night in Los Angeles with the Baltimore Orioles selecting high school shortstop Jackson Holliday (Matt's son) with the top overall pick.
With the first pick of the day, the Jays have selected left-handed batting corner outfielder Alan Roden. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below. According to ...
He pitched a season of summer ball in 2018, posting a 1.55 ERA in 40.2 innings pitched. However, he was more more successful when looking at his three seasons with the university. Prior to the transfer, he played four seasons with Texas-San Antonio, a smaller school. In his four seasons with Ohio State, he posted a 5.68 ERA in 77.2 innings pitched. The 23-year-old recently transferred to A&M, where he slashed .318/.468/.641 with 19 homers in 297 plate appearances. He even limited the walks, as his BB/9 in 2020 was at 3.9 while it was 4.0 in 2021. Interestingly, he had a K% and BB% of 13.41%, meaning despite his build, he isn’t just a power hitter, but also a pretty darn good hitter. This season as a senior at Ohio State, he had a 3.78 ERA in 16.2 innings pitched. According to Prospects Live, his slider is one of the best in the draft class with elite sweeping action. In terms of his collegiate career, he slashed .383/.484/.640 with 14 homers. This season, he posted a 2.84 ERA in 50.2 innings pitched. In summer ball, he slashed .311/.411/.461, but put up 5 homers in 248 plate appearances.
