Stu Cowan: A homecoming for newest Canadien Mike Matheson (Montreal Gazette)

Defenceman grew up in Pointe-Claire and Kent Hughes was his agent before becoming GM of the Habs.

The Panthers decided to lock Matheson up long-term after his first full season in the NHL (2016-17), signing him to an eight-year, US$39-million contract. The GM added that five of Matheson’s 11 goals were game-winners and that almost all of his offensive production (18 of 20 points) came at even strength. “A player like Jeff Petry at his age with his contract is typically going to go to a team trying to compete for a Stanley Cup,” Hughes added. I think Mike is a five-star human being who can be of great assistance to our club in helping our young players.” “So it was fun to kind of take a trip down memory lane.” Article content

Canadiens double down on their developmental model by trading ... (The Athletic)

By trading for Mike Matheson, GM Kent Hughes continued his faith in coach Martin St. Louis' ability to get the most out of players.

Hughes had said he didn’t want to take on a big contract in return for Petry, but he clarified Saturday that he meant he didn’t want to take back a dead contract, a player who was not performing up to its value. “Not individually within the framework of the system, but just as a hockey player. Not to mention all the young players currently on the roster and the ones coming up. But the Canadiens are clearly all-in on what Martin St. Louis can do. To do that, Hughes needed to be confident that Matheson’s performance in Pittsburgh last season, the best season of his career so far, was not a one-off. St. Louis is a firm believer that a player can never stop learning, never stop improving, and Matheson will provide an excellent test case for that theory. “I think Mike’s time in Florida was marked with success and probably some challenges as well. Matheson’s underlying numbers were pretty good last season, but it was the first year that was the case since he signed his massive contract. I think we saw it with Brett Kulak, who was also a good skater. But he has also taken on a lot of term with Matheson; no Canadiens defenceman makes more money per year or is signed for as long as he is. It was Hughes who negotiated the monster eight-year, $39 million contract Matheson signed with the Florida Panthers in 2017 before his entry-level contract was even expired. On Thursday, two more hires — Philippe Desaulniers and Miranda McMillan — were made to work under Boucher.

Hughes on Matheson: 'Mike is a five-star human being' (NHL.com)

MONTREAL -- General manager Kent Hughes met the media on Saturday afternoon via Zoom after trading Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling to the Penguins in exchange ...

With the acquisition on our part of Kirby Dach, we're pretty comfortable at this point in time with what we have in the middle of the ice with Nick Suzuki, Christian Dvorak and Jake Evans. We had a lot of forwards on one-way deals, and with Ryan leaving, we felt it freed us up to bring Rem Pitlick back, who we liked a lot, at a number that we felt was manageable. Mike Matheson is a defenseman who was playing top-4 minutes in Pittsburgh that brings a lot of the qualities that we lose in a Jeff Petry in terms of his ability to transport the puck. There's a reason why he was signed to an eight-year deal when he was in Florida after one full season in the NHL. Brendan Gallagher made a comment to me that one of the things he found very unique about Marty is that he felt he was being coached as an individual. In any trade that we were going to contemplate with Pittsburgh or any other team that involved Jeff Petry, one of the elements that had to either come in the trade or we had to be able to thereafter acquire was a defenseman. Mike was a first-round pick by the Panthers, who had a good start to his pro career. Having Ryan be part of the deal, for them, they felt they needed a little depth at center given that their middle of the ice is certainly older.

Analysis: Mike Matheson is “Petry-esque” in a lot of ways (Habs Eyes on the Prize)

The Montreal native is not in the same tier as Jeff Petry, but his game shows a lot of similarities.

That said, Montreal’s blue line also represents an opportunity for Matheson to show that he can become more than he was in Pittsburgh; that he can play on the power play, on the penalty kill, and that he can serve as that 20-minute-plus top-pairing player. Matheson’s special-teams usage in 2021-22 was negligible at best, and he was most commonly fourth on the Penguins’ depth chart by ice time. One hopes that if there is any individual who can understand Matheson’s strengths and weaknesses, it is the person who leveraged them back in 2017 to bewitch the Florida Panthers’ front office. Defensively, both defenders are very good at denying attackers the blue line, but are more average when forced to retrieve the puck in their own zone. Matheson’s game stagnated, and after two additional disappointing seasons in Florida, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Patric Hornqvist. However, the Florida Panthers were betting that Matheson, who that May had been named Best Defenceman at the 2016 IIHF World Championship, and fellow early-20s defenceman Aaron Ekblad would form the anchors of their blue line for years to come.
