Ondrej Palat isn't staying with the Lightning (Tampa Bay Times)

The Lightning and Palat, one of the team's top playoff performers, can't work out a deal to stay in Tampa Bay.

In January, Palat became the seventh Lightning player to reach the career 400-point mark. Namestnikov — who came up with the Lightning after he was drafted in the first round in 2011, playing for Tampa Bay from 2013-18 — provides versatility. In the 33-year-old Cole, the Lightning get a big, physical defenseman who can kill penalties. Palat’s 48 career playoff goals rank second on the Lightning’s all-time list, trailing only Nikita Kucherov (52). “So I knew that was going to be challenging, but there was, I think, a very strong willingness on both sides to explore all the possibilities. He will likely slot into the team’s third defenseman pairing on the left side.

Star free agent forward Ondrej Palat has signed with the New Jersey Devils early Thursday morning, moving on from his former team.

The 31-year-old will boost a Devils team looking to take the next step next season. Signing Palat gives the Devils a top-six winger the team had desired. However, Gaudreau shockingly decided to sign with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Say goodbye to Ondrej Palat, and hello to a different Lightning future (Tampa Bay Times)

John Romano | The salary cap has eviscerated their roster, but the Lightning have made some clear-eyed choices to keep the window of contention open.

In this case, if you want to have a boat parade, you’re eventually going to run aground on the salary cap. “It’s just the reality of the competitive system that’s in place,” BriseBois said. “This is just the reality of (the) situation,” Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois said. The Lightning have five players — Steven Stamkos, Brayden Point, Nikita Kucherov, Victor Hedman and Andrei Vasilevskiy — who are among the very best in the world at their positions. And maybe, as it turns out, that won’t be such a bad thing. They still have a shot at glory a year from now. The Lightning might even have three consecutive Stanley Cups with a very good chance at a fourth. So are the Lightning less imposing today? Whatever the cause, this is the new reality. If the salary cap was not an issue, Palat, Ryan McDonagh, Blake Coleman and a few other players would still be around. To be fair, this day has been coming for a long time. Ondrej Palat is gone, and there is no replacing that Lightning juju.

New Jersey Devils Sign Ondrej Palat to a 5-Year Contract (The Hockey Writers)

The New Jersey Devils may have missed out on "Johnny Hockey," but they wasted no time signing Ondrej Palat to a five-year deal afterward.

However, as a team with little money available, they just couldn’t match the offers being made for him, which will be a major blow to their lineup. While he is happy to talk about just about anything from cows to cars to video games, hockey will always remain one of his favorite pastimes. In the 2021-22 regular season, Palat scored 15 goals and 48 points in 77 games played, which weren’t terrible totals, but was off his scoring pace from 2020-21.

Fitzgerald's Plan B: New Jersey Devils Signed Ondrej Palat for 5 ... (All About The Jersey)

After midnight, the New Jersey Devils signed Ondrej Palat to a five-season contract worth $30 million. Palat works hard, complements offensive talent, ...

As much as I like how he plays, how he can fit in the top-six, and I think he contribute a plenty of little things, I do not know if there is enough substance to justify a contract this large. He got a winger in Palat that has a positive reputation and a skillset that complements the Devils as well as a history of playing well off of more talented offensive players. The other wanted the Devils to go out and get a stronger, more powerful, beefier winger to supplement a small top-six. Palat has only scored more than 20 goals once in his career and that was in his first full season in the NHL back in 2013-14. There was really one player to really fit that bill that was available, and they wanted Johnny Gaudreau. They did not get him. To be fair, it was likely that whoever was going to sign Palat was going to have to offer a contract like this. Which in of itself is not something to really praise, but that is the reality of the current NHL and how most teams operate with the hard salary cap. In 5-on-5 play, Palat put up 28, 23, and 33 points in each of the last three seasons. Palat has 143 goals and 423 points in 628 games. (Note: He did play 55 in 56 games in the 2020-21 season, he played in 55 out of 56 games. He has appeared in 75 or more games just three times in his career: his first full season in 2013-14 (81 games), his second full season in 2014-15 (75 games), and last season (77 games). While he did appear in a nice 69 games in 2019-20, this means Palat has missed at least 13 games in most seasons in his career so far. Palat was one of the notable wingers available after yesterday’s free agent signings and the Devils got him.

NJ Devils sign Ondřej Palát to 5-year deal, reports say (NorthJersey.com)

The Devils were determined to get an experienced left winger in free agency and did just that overnight Wednesday.

That degree of consistency along with the young forwards in New Jersey can make Palát a valuable signing for the Devils. Speculation on Wednesday suggested that both Gaudreau and Palát would sign with the Devils to give the team a pair of scoring left wingers. Palát is 31 years old and has spent all 10 of his previous NHL seasons in Tampa Bay. He scored 143 goals for the Lightning, helping them claim consecutive Stanley Cup titles in 2019-20 and 2020-21.

Ondrej Palat Signs Five-Year Deal with New Jersey Devils (The Hockey News)

After losing out on the Johnny Gaudreau sweepstakes, the New Jersey Devils have signed forward Ondrej Palat to a five-year contract.

Palat, 31, had 49 points in 77 regular season games and another 21 points in 23 playoff games. After losing out on the Johnny Gaudreau sweepstakes, the New Jersey Devils signed forward Ondrej Palat to a five-year contract with an AAV of $6 million. The New Jersey Devils have landed one of the biggest UFAs on the market.

Devils' Ondrej Palat Signing Will Improve Top-6 (The Hockey Writers)

Though the New Jersey Devils lost out on the Johnny Gaudreau sweepstakes, they still found a top-six upgrade in Ondrej Palat.

Alex Chauvancy is a New Jersey Devils writer for The Hockey Writers who has a penchant for advanced stats, prospects, signings and trades. Did the Devils overpay for Palat? Yes, but he’s still a very useful player who’s a productive scorer and playing well at five-on-five. I’m not sure how much of a jump in the salary cap there’ll be, but if you’re playing the long game, it could help alleviate some cap problems a few years from now. But instead of going full doom and gloom, the Devils could come out okay on the back half of Palat’s contract. The NHL’s new TV deals with ESPN and Turner Sports should also have a positive effect. His Stanley Cup experience is not something you can measure in numbers, but for a Devils team that has lost a lot of games the last few seasons, having someone like Palat, who’s been through it all in his career, will help. The Devils could have afforded to overpay for Palat, and they did. On top of the 18 goals and 49 points he totaled, he scored more than a few clutch goals to lead the Lightning to their third straight Stanley Cup Final appearance. With that said, the contract is a bit steep. After a massively successful run with Tampa Bay Lightning that saw him appear in four Stanley Cup Finals and come away with two rings, he hit free agency for the first time in his career. After netting 46 points in 55 games during the pandemic-shortened season a year ago, Palat had a solid 2021-22 campaign. Palat, 31 years old, is coming off a third straight Stanley Cup Final appearance and 18 goals and 49 points in 77 regular-season games.
