The five-time Selke Trophy winner would be near the top of this list based on his talent and leadership. He had a career-best 21 goals and 53 points this past season, plus 18 points in 16 games as the Rangers reached the Eastern Conference final. He was slowed by a pelvic injury in the playoffs. Kuemper had a career-best 37 wins this season and won the Stanley Cup, though he was hurt for part of Colorado's run. But he has only 91 games of NHL experience. The defenseman plays a physical shutdown style. He finished fourth in Hart Trophy voting and scored in overtime of Game 7 of the first round. He wasn't as strong this season. Then he helped Colorado win a Stanley Cup. Included in his run: a hat trick after he had received social-media threats over his inadvertent collision with Blues goalie Jordan Binnington, and an overtime goal in Game 4 of the Final in his first game back from thumb surgery. The longtime Flyers captain scored 23 points in 18 regular-season games after his trade and helped Florida reach the second round for the first time since 1996. He's due a big raise from his $1.8 million last season. The Maple Leafs acquired Matt Murray, so Campbell will move on.

However, the Blue Jackets clearly want to keep Laine as a cornerstone of the franchise after acquiring him from the Jets just two seasons ago. This one is more about the moves that don't need to be made. The Blue Jackets have missed the playoffs in each of the past two seasons as they try to retool their roster. The Flyers have also been linked to Gaudreau, who is originally from the southern New Jersey suburbs outside of Philadelphia. This is a team that is coming off a season in which it had the second-fewest wins in the Eastern Conference. The Flyers need to resist the temptation of backing up the Brinks truck for Gaudreau and build around young players like Owen Tippett, Joel Farabee, Cutter Gauthier and Carter Hart. A few mid-level signings to shore up the center position in the form of Dylan or Ryan Strome wouldn't be a bad idea, but lofty contracts are not what this team needs right now. It's safe to say that the Bruins need to address the middle of the ice and bringing back at least one, if not both, Bergeron and Krejci would be huge. The Oilers took the next step and advanced all the way to the Western Conference Final. However, it was Mike Smith's performance in net that ultimately led to Edmonton's demise. There's a ton of pressure on the Flames after winning the Pacific Division and having a strong season that resulted in them winning a playoff series. Some clever maneuvering will be required in order to add talent to the forward group. If the Bruins are able to add the two veteran centers to the 2022-23 roster, it would go a long way toward stabilizing the position. Their future depends on this deal getting done and keeping him in a Flames uniform for potentially the remainder of his career. There won't be a ton of star power up for grabs after the Nashville Predators re-signed star winger Filip Forsberg to a massive eight-year contract. After a career-best 115-point season, Gaudreau's value will never be higher and his importance to the Flames' franchise can't be measured.
The offseason is under way and with the market opening July 13 there will be plenty of action this summer. Some teams have already been busy getting their 2022- ...

He has one assist in 13 career regular season games with Montreal and will likely be a call-up option again. Manson can be a bit overly aggressive and take dumb penalties, but he got the job done in Colorado and the team clearly felt he was too valuable to let go. Olofsson is a two-time 20-goal scorer and was about to hit 50 points in the regular season for the first time. THN's Take: Schultz is a decent bet. Smith won't produce a ton of points, but he is a decent physical presence that isn't afraid to drop the gloves. THN’s Take: Copp was such a big piece of the Rangers' playoff run this year and had over a point-per-game in 16 regular season games, too. For the Blackhawks, this is a solid pickup. Mikheyev has 72 points in 146 career games, mainly acting as a buzzsaw middle-six energy forward with the Leafs. Comrie has always been a backup, but with Malcolm Subban and Craig Anderson in Buffalo's court, he'll have an opportunity to fight for more starts in the best opportunity of his career. A big-bodied blueliner, Sergachev can dominate the game physically and is confident when moving the puck. Cernak has become a vital piece of Tampa's core, willing to lay down the body and sacrifice himself to make a play. THN's Take: Kulak is a very good second-pair defender with the ability to push possession and disrupt the cycle in his own zone.

Claude Giroux, Johnny Gaudreau and Evegni Malkin headline this year's free agent class.
He proved to be a versatile option, playing center in the bottom-six or playing on a ring on the top two lines. He never found a clear role in Buffalo, but he could play top-four minutes in the right system. Vatrano can play up and down the lineup, and his versatility should be appealing to a team in need of forward depth. He has a ton of skill and the signs are there and he can be an offensive weapon in this league. Given the package Colorado gave up for him at the deadline, it's likely that he stays in Denver, but they have a ton of free agents to deal with. When he was on, he was one of the best goalies in hockey. The age is a bit of concern, but he proved this year he's cut out to be a star starter. The 33-year-old winger continues to prove he still has a lot left in the tank after showing flashes over the years that he might be done. The only question with Dobson is will the Islanders sign him to a long-term extension or give him a bridge deal to allow him to prove this year wasn't a fluke. The Stars should not hesitate to get a deal to keep him in Texas. The Jets have a lot of questions that need answers to this offseason and Dubois is one of them. The Flames forward has found his offensive touch and is in for a big payday.
The top player on the market is Johnny Gaudreau, who ranked third in scoring last season with 115 points for the Calgary Flames. Gaudreau informed the Flames on ...

A look under the hood at his underlying profile confirms the elite impact he has on suppressing shots and scoring chances. The Ducks actually controlled a strong 52 percent share of shot attempts and scoring chances during his five-on-five minutes last season. For one, Stastny shifted to the wing for most of last season. He remains a high-quality play driver to boot as he helped the Jets outshoot, outchance and outscore opponents by decisive margins at five-on-five. He moves the puck well, can jump up the play to activate on entries and in the attacking zone, and his skills are still top-notch. Even if he didn’t factor into the club’s long-term plans, it would have been better for Chicago to come to a short-term agreement and trade him at the deadline rather than let him walk for nothing. The Blackhawks knew this as they fed Strome a heavy dosage of offensive zone starts, mostly played him against bottom-six competition and lined up Patrick Kane on his wing for long stretches. He drives play, provides offense, is reliable at both ends of the ice and plays a gritty, in-your-face style which he’s now learned to use without crossing the line. Day 1 of the open market lived up to the hype with over 150 signings and nearly a billion dollars made in contractual commitments. Kadri produced a whopping 87 points in 71 games last season which is a huge outlier — his previous career-high was just 61 points all the way back in 2016-17. Compare Kadri’s basic statistical profile to Tomas Hertl, for example, who earned an eight-year extension at an $8.1375 million AAV despite never cracking the point-per-game mark in a single season. In the last three years before this season, Kadri scored 112 points in 180 games, which translates to a 51 points per 82 games clip.

Tony DeAngelo, an offense-first defenseman who was kicked off his second-to-last team and who stands as one of the most divisive players in the NHL. Nicolas Deslauriers, a 31-year-old enforcer who has averaged six goals a year for the past five seasons. Plus, there were some earlier signings along the way as well as some major trades. Dylan Sikura is returning to the Blackhawks on a one-year deal, per sources. But when this year’s frenzy began Wednesday, that finally changed — in a big way. 12:28 p.m. --- The Maple Leafs are signing Nicolas Aube-Kubel to a one-year deal. 11:45 a.m. --- The Sabres and Victor Olofsson have agreed to a two-year, $9.5 million deal. 11:10 a.m. --- The Avalanche are re-signing Josh Manson on a four-year, $18 million deal. 3:30 p.m. --- The Panthers give Colin White a one-year deal. On the surface seven years is a LOT of years. The last big-name goalie is off the board, as Kuemper is heading to the Capitals as expected. With this contract, the Red Wings are showing they have confidence that Copp can continue to produce in the top-six, but there is some risk there. It was kind of expecting that Palat would get overpaid, and he secures the bag from the Devils after they missed out on Gaudreau. It's a good signing for New Jersey, who get an all-around excellent player with playoff experience, but he's not the over-the-top, game-changing player they were hoping to get. This year's class is a bit on the weaker side and a lot of the big names are already off the table. While some are questioning Gaudreau's decision to sign with Columbus considering it's not home to him and that was the whole motivation for him not re-signing in Calgary, no one is questioning the deal the Blue Jackets gave him. It seemed like Gaudreau was destined to be either a Devil or an Islander and at the last second, Jarmo Kekalainen and the Blue Jackets swooped in and stole him away. However, there are still some elite players that have yet to sign a new deal.
