Stars Sign Marchment to Four-Year Deal (The Hockey News)

The Dallas Stars have signed forward Mason Marchment to a four-year contract.

With a cap crunch taking place in Florida, it was unlikely that the Panthers would have managed to find the room to pay Marchment what he was worth on the open market. Marchment broke out in a big way for the Florida Panthers last season after spending his early career with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In 54 games in 2021-22, Marchment racked up an impressive 18 goals and 47 points in just 54 games on a stacked Panthers squad, logging a smidge over 14 minutes per night and developing as a penalty killer, as well. One of the more pleasant surprises in the NHL from this past season has found a new home.

The Dallas Stars have signed Mason Marchment to a 4-year contract after Marchment's breakout season with the Florida Panthers.

“No matter what, this will be a very different-looking Stars club when the calendar turns to October.” In addition to his 54 points, he dished out 114 hits, third among Panthers’ forwards. In 54 games, he scored 19 goals and added 29 assists for 47 points while posting an eye-popping plus-29 rating and averaging 14:07 of ice time. The Maple Leafs traded him to the Panthers in February, 2020. He signed a two-year contract with the Panthers in November of the same year and in the 2020-21 season played in 33 games and recorded 10 points. The left winger, 27 years old, went undrafted after an three-year OHL career.

And the contributions of the unheralded Marchment had a lot to do with it. But he has an imposing frame -- at 6-foot-4, 209 pounds -- and may well end up being a bargain who could accrue second- or third-line minutes on a contender. Marchment, 27, signed a four-year deal with an average annual value of $4.5 million against the salary cap.

After a breakout season with the Florida Panthers, Marchment cashes in with the Stars.

Reports then came in that Klingberg and Dallas had renewed negotiations, but with the addition of Marchment, a reunion would be very difficult to fit underneath the salary cap. By signing Marchment, the Stars are taking a gamble that last season was no fluke but rather a sign of things to come: Mason Marchment broke my model with a ridiculously off-the-charts season last year.
