The Montreal Canadiens signed defenceman Madison Bowey to a one-year, two-way contract Wednesday.

Bowey suited up for two games with the Vancouver Canucks this past season. The 27-year-old, selected in the second round by Washington in 2013, has 158 games of NHL experience split between the Capitals, Red Wings, Blackhawks and Canucks but has only played four games at the NHL level since 2019-20. Bowey, who won gold with Team Canada at the 2015 world juniors, spent the majority of 2021-22 with the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks, recording eight goals, 20 assists and 80 penalty minutes in 53 games.

Montreal Canadiens Sign Three Players (prohockeyrumors.com)

The Montreal Canadiens are getting some organizational defensive depth in the form of Madison Bowey, Mitchell Stephens, and Anthony Richard.

Stephens is signing in Montreal likely for an AHL role, and he’s proven himself to be a capable AHL center. The Peterborough, Ontario native had eight points in 4 four games in his last bit of AHL action and has shown enough talent to be penciled into Dauphin/ Cedric Paquette’s now-vacated top-of-the-lineup role in Laval. In Ouellet’s place comes Bowey, who spent most of last season on the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks. Bowey, 27, brings speed and a solid transitional game but has never been able to put together his intriguing tools into a more complete game.

Montreal Canadiens sign Anthony Richard to one-year contract (Habs Eyes on the Prize)

The Canadiens made a series of moves to address the AHL depth on Wednesday.

After signing Madison Bowey, the team added forward Anthony Richard as well, on a one-year, two-way deal. Richard will likely join the Rocket, filling in a role previously occupied by J.-S. Dea as the veteran forward with scoring upside. Richard clearly caught the eye of Canadiens management after a strong playoff showing, even in a losing effort.
