Montoyo oversaw a tumultuous period in Blue Jays history, with the team playing home games in three cities last season, including two minor league parks, because of border restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Before joining the Blue Jays, Montoyo spent six seasons on Tampa Bay’s major league coaching staff, including his final three as bench coach. “Us as players know things could be better, things have to be better,” Blue Jays outfielder George Springer said. Toronto went 91-71 in 2021 and missed tying for the AL wild card by one game. Hopefully, who he is as a person will kind of ooze onto us as players and allow us to relax a little bit, have a little bit more fun and kind of enjoy the day.” General manager Ross Atkins made the move even with the Blue Jays at 46-42 this season. “He likes to have fun. That Double-A team featured current Blue Jays stars Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette and Jordan Romano, among others. I think we’re better than how we’ve played.” Triple-A manager Casey Candaele was named interim bench coach. The Jays currently have a 46-42 record, but have lost 10 of their last 12 games.

Not just that, but Charlie definitely didn’t deserve to be the scapegoat, and if the Jays can’t turn this season around, they will regret this move. However, the Angels fired Joe Maddon on June 7th and have gone 11-21 since that day. For example, the Philadelphia Phillies fired Joe Griadi on June 3rd and have gone 24-13 since that time.

The Toronto Blue Jays have fired manager Charlie Montoyo, according to The Athletic's.

More than anything, Montoyo could have been a victim of the fact that a coaching change was the easiest lever for Toronto to pull. Too talented to be this mediocre.

Now acquire another starter and someone with an actual fastball for the bullpen. Uncharacteristic for this front office, but it was the most obvious move beyond major trade. They've spent a lot on payroll, have big expectations and are two games over .500 since May 1. The Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Guardians are only two games behind. A surprise but less so when you think it through.

The Yankees’ next series with the Blue Jays is set for August 18-21 at Yankee Stadium. As a player, he appeared in 1,028 minor league games and all of four major league ones. He has a 5.12 earned-run average over 16 games this season and is currently on the 15-day injured list. Blue Jays bench coach John Schneider has been named interim manager for the remainder of the season. There are several underlying factors here that reek of disappointment, especially for a team that went all in like the Jays did this offseason. Prior to joining the Rays’ major league staff, he managed their Triple-A affiliate Durham Bulls from 2007 to 2014.

Blue Jays Hoping John Schneider Can Help Team Overcome ... (Sports Illustrated)

The Blue Jays fired manager Charlie Montoyo on Wednesday, replacing him with John Schneider in an interim position.

Like many of the team's top prospects, Schneider moved as manager from Single to Double A during the rebuilding years and received his MLB promotion in 2019. But it was a little different, because he's now the guy in charge. He has a familiarity with the organization and has managed this young core up through the minors. It wasn't under the circumstances he hoped for, replacing the manager he coached under, but it was a long-time focus finally realized. Falling short of lofty expectations, Atkins and Toronto made a change—out with Charlie Montoyo at manager and in with John Schneider, along with an interim tag and a new bench coach. They now approach the All-Star break four games over .500, 15 back of the division lead, and hovering on the brink of a playoff spot.

Schneider has 74 games remaining in the regular season to see if he can push the Blue Jays to do better. Schneider, 42, spent six seasons as a catcher in the Blue Jays minor-league system. In April, Montoyo was awarded a contract extension through the 2023 season. The Mariners pulled even with Toronto after a four-game sweep of the Blue Jays in Seattle last weekend. “It’s out of respect for Charlie,” Atkins said when asked about the curious timing of the managerial move. Montoyo and others from the Blue Jays organization attended her funeral on Monday.

John Schneider, who has been in the organization as long as anyone, gets a chance to prove his worth. That’s what happened here in Toronto today and now, the pressure instantly shifts not only onto the players, but management, as well. It was a collective failure, right up to the top where Ross Atkins himself took blame for the teams struggles. Ross Stripling turned in a tremendous seven innings for the Jays throwing 81 pitches — 57 of which were strikes — while allowing just two hits, and two runs as he fanned six batters. You could see a different bravado with the team. What did the team do in response?

Opinion | The Jays expect new manager John Schneider to hold ... (Toronto Star)

Several Jays regulars won minor-league championships with Schneider as skipper. They know how he operates, and welcome Wednesday's surprise move.

He’s got 72 games to get them securely into that top spot and in good position for what could very well be a long post-season run. “I like to be aggressive,” he said — and it showed as Schneider put the hit-and-run on twice in Wednesday night’s game, both times with Espinal at the plate; Espinal singled each time. I was trying, but I didn’t have that mentality — the mentality that I do now — and he would see it, recognize it and get in my ass a little bit. “As a leader he made everything fun to come to the ballpark every single day,” said Biggio. “It was nice to have, from a leader aspect, to encourage things like that and to make sure we got our work in and make sure we had fun playing the game. “When he was my manager,” said Bichette, “he was able to hold people accountable, make sure that we were prepared, make sure we worked hard, and I think he did a great job with communicating. This is the end goal for me as a baseball coach when I stopped playing … something I don’t take lightly.”

Schneider earns 1st win as skipper on 'bittersweet' day (MLB.com)

TORONTO -- On his way to lunch with his wife and two boys Wednesday afternoon, John Schneider's phone rang. It was Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins.

But now that it’s his team to run with, Schneider stood from his chair at the end of his postgame press conference and said, as only a manager can: “Schneider is definitely more of a big personality,” said Ross Stripling, who gave the Blue Jays seven excellent innings. If you had one dollar for each time someone used the word “energy” to describe Schneider, you’d be eating a nice lunch Thursday afternoon. Drafted by the Blue Jays in 2002, Schneider moved into a coaching role in ‘08 and has been climbing the ladder ever since. This isn’t a secret within the Blue Jays’ clubhouse. That’s definitely something we want to do going forward, is to force the issue at times and be aggressive on the bases.”

A natural leader, new Blue Jays manager John Schneider gets his ... (Toronto Sun)

Standing at the far end of the Blue Jays dugout on Wednesday evening was both a familiar feeling and a dream come true for John Schneider.

As one Jays player told us, sometimes change can be a positive, no matter the cause. Recognizing where his future in the game was headed, he then switched to coaching and has been a key developer of talent over the years. I like having fun. I like being aggressive. He’s likely to be a more vocal presence than Montoyo, which perhaps will better resonate with players. Fittingly, then, he sees no downside to his elevation, beyond saying good bye to a colleague whose opinion and friendship he valued. He’s the perfect person to step in here.” It shows what kind of a leader he is. “He’s a natural leader,” said Biggio, who was a star on that championship Fisher Cats squad in 2018. The 42-year-old, who was elevated from bench coach to replace Montoyo, has managed at four levels of the team’s minor-league system. He does so with a team built to be a contender immediately, albeit one that has underachieved for large portions of its first 88 games this season. Article content

Do you think Schneider is the right guy to manage the Blue Jays? At 41 years old, Schneider has spent almost his entire baseball career and half of his life in the Toronto Blue Jays organization.
