“This might be a year where it drags on a little bit longer.” There’s some money to be spent, and players are going to make a lot of money.” So will the Washington Capitals after GM Brian MacLellan “jumped into the fire” by trading Vitek Vanecek to the Devils and doubled down on remaking his goaltending by not tendering a qualifying offer to Ilya Samsonov. “Evgeni is a generational talent who will be remembered as one of the greatest players in NHL history,” GM Ron Hextall said. Kadri, who will be 32 by opening night, was one of the Avalanche’s best players on their Cup run with 15 points in 16 games sandwiched around a broken right thumb he played through in the final. “It is my strong belief that this was a family decision, and I respect that fully,” disappointed Flames general manager Brad Treliving said Tuesday night.

Want to watch the next generation of hockey stars before they make the show? A deal didn’t come to fruition – for an extension or a trade – and Gaudreau went into the final year of his deal, 82 games away from unrestricted free agency, and went nuclear. The Flames will lose Gaudreau for nothing. In other words: the ability to manage the asset exists with Tkachuk in a way it didn’t really exist with Gaudreau. Want to sign him long-term? Heck, maybe Gaudreau went into the season with a bit of a chip on his shoulder after he and the Flames couldn’t work out an extension. If they didn’t think they could’ve done it, perhaps they should have traded him – a stance slightly complicated by Gaudreau’s five team trade list in the final year of his deal, but a valid one nonetheless.

Calgary Flames sign Kevin Rooney (The Win Column)

The Calgary Flames said goodbye to their best player in decades on the eve of free agency, and immediately opened free agency by signing depth forward.

It’s also possible he spends time in the AHL. He was teammates with former Flames Jon Gillies, Mark Jankowski and John Gilmour. He was undrafted and signed by the New Jersey Devils following four years in the NCAA with Providence College. He served as the captain for Providence in his final year.

With Johnny Gaudreau gone, what do the Calgary Flames do with ... (The Win Column)

The Calgary Flames and their fans just witnessed one of the most crushing and franchise altering decisions in their history. Long time Flame and super.

If Tkachuk does in fact want out of Calgary now that Gaudreau is gone, the Flames simply won’t have a choice but to trade him. As well with Gaudreau making his decision just hours before free agency begins, the Flames are now stuck in a tough situation. With the door wide open due to his one-year qualifying offer sitting there, Tkachuk very well may be on his way out next. If Tkachuk wanted out, the Flames would quite frankly have no choice but to rebuild. If it comes to that, the Flames would be smart to move him as soon as possible while his value is still at its highest point. If they Flames are truly serious about trying to continue to compete for a Stanley Cup even with Gaudreau gone, then they need to do everything they possibly can to retain Tkachuk. He’s now their best player and losing him would drag the team down even further. With Gaudreau out of the picture, Tkachuk is now the Flames best and most important player. The Flames’ goal now is to build a contender around Tkachuk. With no Gaudreau contract on the books, Tkachuk could request even more money from the Flames now than if Gaudreau had stuck around. If he were to sign an offer sheet, the Flames could choose to match that to retain him. As an restricted free agent, Tkachuk of course cannot go to the open market, meaning the Flames hold most of the leverage as they retain his rights. Coming into the offseason the Flames had two main goals, sign Gaudreau and sign Matthew Tkachuk. In other words, sign their two best players.

He’ll likely become a favorite of Darryl Sutter and should be someone Flames fans come to admire for his work on their penalty kill. Rooney’s signing in Calgary likely signals last season’s fourth-line pivot, Trevor Lewis, could be returning to the wing, where he has spent most of his career. Rooney will need to improve his work at the faceoff dot, as his career 46.3% win rate is underwhelming for a defensive center, but otherwise, he’s a reasonable, sensible acquisition for a GM facing a ton of pressure.
