The rebuilding San Jose Sharks have traded veteran defenceman Brent Burns to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Carolina was not initially on Burns's trade list, but he ultimately agreed to the deal. Burns was a forward in his one year of junior with the Brampton Battalion before he switched to defence in the pro ranks. Burns had a modified no-trade clause in which he was able to accept a trade to only three teams.
The Sharks traded Burns and AHL forward Lane Pederson to Carolina for forward Steven Lorentz, AHL goalie Eetu Makiniemi and a conditional 2023 third-round pick.
