He’ll test free agency and hit the open market as a result. One team with loads of cap space that’s a logical fit is the New Jersey Devils, who could launch themselves into playoff contention with a Gaudreau/ Jack Hughes connection up front. Gaudreau and Calgary haven’t come to an agreement despite steadily increasing offers from general manager Brad Treliving to get him to stay.

The pair, alongside center Elias Lindholm, formed one of the most productive lines in the NHL last season. “I felt there was a deal to do there. So we just have to take a deep breath. It's been a long process over the last couple of days, but at the end of the day, we need to move forward and we intend to do that.”

New Jersey Devils: Two Big Free Agent Questions Regarding ... (Pucks and Pitchforks)

The New Jersey Devils already made moves like selecting Simon Nemec in the 2022 NHL Draft and getting goalie Vitek Vanecek via trade. But now comes the most ...

Let’s say the Flyers or Islanders do get Gaudreau. What do the Devils do now? Finally, the other big move the Devils can make is not a free agent. I believe that the Devils will push their most vigorous efforts to make sure their rivals don’t sign him. The Flyers are the other team that wants to sign Johnny Gaudreau. They will fight hard to do so as well. For the Devils, this would be the perfect opportunity to get a potential left-wing to add to a franchise that desperately needs it. However, there is one player the Devils must consider once FA opens.

So will the Washington Capitals after GM Brian MacLellan “jumped into the fire” by trading Vitek Vanecek to the Devils and doubled down on remaking his goaltending by not tendering a qualifying offer to Ilya Samsonov. Waddell joked he and the Hurricanes aren’t looking for a goaltender for the first time in many years, but there’s no shortage of teams that are. “This might be a year where it drags on a little bit longer.” There’s some money to be spent, and players are going to make a lot of money.” Kadri, who will be 32 by opening night, was one of the Avalanche’s best players on their Cup run with 15 points in 16 games sandwiched around a broken right thumb he played through in the final. “It is my strong belief that this was a family decision, and I respect that fully,” disappointed Flames general manager Brad Treliving said Tuesday night.

Pondering Flames' free agent, future plans without Gaudreau (NHL)

What should the Flames do without Johnny Gaudreau? Should they chase an expensive free agent replacement, trade the likes of Tkachuk, or something else?

Perhaps GM Brad Treliving would wonder: without Gaudreau, but with injuries, could the 2022-23 Flames slip quite a bit? What if Alex DeBrincat wants out of Ottawa, and the Flames pounce? (Gaudreau tends to be good at pulling off that form of hockey geometry.) They could note that as recently as 2020-21, this team missed the playoffs entirely. After all, Gaudreau is the sort of playmaker who improves others. Instead of stretching beyond your grasp hoping that an overpriced free agent could replace Kadri, maybe an opportunity falls into the Flames laps? (He even seemed to pass the Darryl Sutter test.) Perhaps you eye a distressed asset who could be revitalized. Sure, you lose a level of control, but big-ticket free agents rarely justify their prices. Throughout the NHL, few create offense at Gaudreau’s level. Honestly, it would be dangerous to expect a repeat of his 2021-22 season. It’s his first of 40 goals, and wasn’t just his first at 100+ points; he reached 115.

Gaudreau opts for free agency; Flames 'have to move on' (TSN)

With Gaudreau out of the picture, Colorado Avalanche forward Nazem Kadri is the next biggest name available on the market, followed by Evander Kane of the Edmonton Oilers. There are also mid-tier offensive forwards who have produced in top-line roles, including Max Domi and Andrew Copp, that could be available. If both Gaudreau and Tkachuk leave, will the team opt for a rebuild and move other pieces? It’s been a long process, a long couple of days, but at the end of the day…we need to move forward. Calgary had the ability to offer Gaudreau an eight-year deal until Tuesday midnight ET, as opposed to the seven-year maximum he will receive if he signs a new contract on Wednesday or in the coming days or weeks. Instead, Gaudreau, a native of Salem, N.J.,who will become a parent in the coming months, has been focused on the best fit for his family. I want to wish him and his family all the very, very best.”

NHL market buzz: What comes next for Johnny Gaudreau? (Sportsnet.ca)

With hours until the free agent market opens on July 13, Elliotte Friedman shares the latest around Johnny Gaudreau, Nazem Kadri, Vincent Trocheck and more.

One source indicated it was similar to what Toronto sent Carolina — a first-round draft pick — for the Hurricanes to take Patrick Marleau in 2019. Malkin’s contract matched what was proposed in discussions one day earlier, only to be derailed by his complete frustration at the process. It’s not Sidney Crosby’s way to publicly opine on roster moves, but, someday, I hope he gives us a glance of the role he played. An emotional Treliving went out of his way to be gracious, accepting it was a family decision. And teams prefer Philadelphia’s 2023 pick, not the Florida 2024 selection acquired for Claude Giroux. Three hours later, our inboxes beeped with a Pittsburgh Penguins media release — announcing Evgeni Malkin’s four-year, $24.4M extension.

July 12, 2022 will go down as a dark day in Flames History. Just add it to the pile of bad days in this franchise's history. The greatest #13 and 4th round pick in Flames history is packing his bags and heading somewhere else. He has a baby on the way and today he made a decision that was best for himself and his family. The Flames and Gaudreau's agent all said everything possible was done to keep him in Calgary, but Johnny Gaudreau decided it was time to end his run with the Flames. On Tuesday night Johnny Gaudreau told the Flames that he was not returning to the team and was going to test free agency. If all reports are correct the Flames had around $80 million dollars on the table for Gaudreau, but the draw of "home" appeared to be too much for the Flames winger.

New Jersey Devils: When Would Johnny Gaudreau Contract Hurt ... (Pucks and Pitchforks)

The New Jersey Devils are considering a $10+ million contract for Johnny Gaudreau. Will this hurt them in salary cap space in the long run?

Eventually, the Devils would have to make a hard decision. The Devils could get one of their top prospects signed to a discount. Listen, this isn’t telling the Devils not to sign Johnny Gaudreau. They can easily figure this all out, and it’s really not putting them in a pinch for four or five years. It’s wild to think about, but the Devils had a lot of short-term deals for important players. The Devils have an expected $57 million in cap space in 2023. With the contracts already in place, barring they move one of Zacha or Wood, the Devils now have $33 million in space. What does that do to the Devils bottom line now and in the future? $11 million to Gaudreau, $7 million to Bratt, and then a combined $6 million to Zacha, Wood, and Boqvist, and the Devils now have around $2 million in cap space. The Devils are going to be giving Gaudreau the most expensive contract on the team. The Devils still have to find contracts for Jesper Bratt, Pavel Zacha, Miles Wood, and Jesper Boqvist. They already assigned Wood to arbitration. So, the Devils are losing their $26 million in cap space quickly. The New Jersey Devils are not facing a salary-cap crunch.
