The Senators (33-42-7) placed seventh in the Atlantic Division, missing the playoffs. Minnesota has $4.279 million in additional cap space, which can potentially be used to sign prospects Marco Rossi, Calen Addison and Adam Beckman or other free agents. "They already had a good young core and they made some good moves at the draft and have the space to still make a splash the next couple days.
On l’aime beaucoup. I don’t have shit to do »). Cam Talbot est sous contrat.

He was very good down the stretch before ceding the net to Fleury in the playoff series against the St. Louis Blues. Those feelings were further exacerbated last week when the Wild opted to re-sign Fleury. That should allow the Wild to go shopping when free agency opens at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

As for Ottawa, the Sens now have Talbot on an expiring contract for next season to bridge the gap to another starting goaltender. Minnesota could look to sign a backup goalie for depth in free agency, which begins Wednesday at noon ET. Gustavsson could also serve as backup next season. the Blues, allowing 15 goals with a .906 SV%. The three-time Stanley Cup champion will turn 38 during the 2022-23 season.

Gustavsson is young and has decent upside, and while he doesn’t steal the “goalie of the future” tag claimed by Jesper Wallstedt, he fills the void in the organization left by Kaapo Kahkonen as a long-term tandem or backup option. Originally a second-round pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016, Gustavsson now finds himself with his third NHL organization by no fault of his own. In 49 games with the Wild last year, the 35-year-old Talbot had a 32-12-4 record, three shutouts, 2.76 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage.
The Ottawa Senators have acquired Cam Talbot from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Filip Gustavsson.
Going the other way is Gustavsson, a 24-year-old with just 27 games of NHL experience under his belt. He'll still need to fight for the starter's job, as Anton Forsberg emerged as the team's most dependable netminder last season and earned a three-year contract extension for his troubles, but his addition gives coach DJ Smith some incredible depth in net to work with. Despite opening the season as the starter, once the Wild acquired the reigning Vezina winner, Talbot relinquished his job almost immediately and was reportedly upset after GM Bill Guerin signed Fleury to a two-year contract extension during last week's draft.

Love his battles with Oliver Kapanen (#89), who is a solid all-around center and a year older. We can have all the discussions we want.
The Minnesota Wild have made a smart move to help secure the future of the team. The Wild sent Cam Talbot to the Ottawa Senators in a salary cap dump.
When looking at it from that perspective, the fact that the Wild did not have to hold back any salary or give up a draft pick in order to get the Senators to take Talbot was a win at the end of the day. With this move, the swapping of goalies in this league continues, and I do not think we are done just yet. I do not think many Wild fans are happy to see Talbot dealt for not much of a return besides a 24-year-old goaltender, but this really is a good team for the Wild. Minnesota cleared up some 2.9 million dollars in cap space by trading Talbot to the Senators without holding back any salary.

The 35-year-old Talbot has one year remaining on his contract at a $3.66-million cap hit, the Wild did not retain any of his salary. "Cam is experienced and provides us with greater goaltending stability heading into next season," said Dorion via a team press release. Then the club moved Murray on Monday. Guerin had previously stated he wanted both Talbot and Fleury back in net for 2022-23. We can have all the discussions we want. Fleury then took over the No. 1 role and played five of Minnesota's six playoff games.

While Talbot's contract carries a cap hit of $3,666,667 through next season, his salary in 2022-23 is only $3 million. His agent George Bezos told The Athletic that he met with Wild general manager Bill Guerin at the draft about bringing Fleury back and what it meant for Talbot. "We both stated our positions, Billy has a lot to think about," Bezos said. Talbot, 35, appeared in 49 games for the Wild last season, going 32-12-4 with a .911 save percentage and three shutouts.

"Cam is experienced and provides us with greater goaltending stability heading into next season," Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said in a release. Talbot had a record of 32-12-4 with the Wild last season, with a 2.76 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage. The Minnesota Wild traded goaltender Cam Talbot to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for goaltender Filip Gustavsson on Tuesday, a day after sending Matt Murray to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Well, it looks like Minnesota Wild GM Bill Guerin did, in fact, have shit to do. Announced by the team on Tuesday night, the Wild have sent goaltender Cam ...
His .892 save percentage in 18 games for the Senators last season doesn’t inspire the most confidence, but with the guidance of Hall-of-Famer Fleury and being behind a much-improved blue line, that number should change. With this move, the Wild have opened up $2.879 million in cap space, totaling to approximately $4.3 million. In Gustavsson, the Wild are getting a young netminder that has just 27 NHL games experience, but after being selected in the second-round by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 — hey, a connection to Guerin — he has been heralded as a goaltender with some level of potential.
On the eve of free agency, the Minnesota Wild have traded goaltender Cam Talbot to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Filip Gustavsson.
Now without Talbot as his 1B, Fleury will go back to being the de facto number-one. After one forgettable season in Calgary, Talbot re-established himself as a solid starter in Minnesota, so it’s understandable that he wants to go back to being the man in the crease. With him in the fold, Pierre Dorion has seemingly transformed his goaltending from a weakness to a strength almost overnight. Talbot will now split the net with 29-year-old Anton Forsberg, who performed well last season finishing with a 2.82 goals-against average (GAA) and .917 save percentage (SV%) in 46 appearances. It was also reported by Pierre LeBrun that Talbot enjoyed his time with the Wild and was happy going to the Sens, so it looks like both sides parted amicably. After Fleury was re-signed, NHL insider Eliotte Friedman reported that Talbot was unhappy with the proposed 1A/1B arrangement going into the 2022-23 season.

The Senators continue to try to end their rebuild with the Cam Talbot trade. Meanwhile, the Wild save salary cap space with Filip Gustavsson instead.
If things work out, the Wild also opened up a decent-looking timeline for goalies. Weegar’s a right-handed defenseman who could bring a lot to the table, if the Senators indeed went after him. Overall, it’s a very reasonable trade for both teams, and an interesting indication of their directions heading into 2022 NHL Free Agency. ( Elliotte Friedman ranks among those who report that the Senators have interest in a Weegar trade.) If the Senators aren’t closing their rebuild window this offseason, it’s not for a lack of effort. So … there are some areas to stumble. Obviously, the biggest thrust was a different trade. In 2022-23, Weegar only carries a $3.25M cap hit. The Cam Talbot trade saves the Wild close to $3M in salary cap space. - Again, there’s DeBrincat, and there would be Weegar if the Senators trade for the defenseman. With MacKenzie Weegar, the Senators could trade for another fascinating upgrade who also happens to be approaching a contract year. By no means is a Cam Talbot trade the biggest sign that the Senators are trying to slam their rebuild window shut.
"Cam is experienced and provides us with greater goaltending stability heading into next season."
He was already widely respected by Ottawa faithful before the move was made. Forsberg was solid throughout the season, but the Senators need somebody who can play at least 30 games. The Senators have Mads Sogaard and Kevin Mandolese in the system while prospect Leevi Merilainen looks like he’ll play in Ottawa as well. A native of Caledonia, Ont., Talbot finished last season ranked 10th in wins among NHL goalies with 32 victories in 49 appearances in the Wild net. Article content Article content

This is a little bit of future-seeing on my part, but we all knew that Talbot was in the final year of his contract, and that he probably wasn’t part of the plan for the 2023-24 season. We won’t see him this year — unless everyone suddenly gets injured — but next year, especially if Gustavsson doesn’t pan out, he could arguably make his case to be a backup for his age-21 season, and have that Tuukka Rask-Tim Thomas dynamic of your future franchise goaltender being behind a very, very good veteran. He seems to genuinely do right by them, for the most part, and is there to chat, as he did with Talbot ever since signing Fleury to his extension. Gustavsson is in the final year of his second contract that carries a cap hit of just $787,500, so compare that to Talbot’s $3.66-million cap hit before he heads to free agency next summer, and it’s a significant difference of $2.897 million. It is a tough balancing act that really tests the strength of the management’s ability to communicate well with their players. But interestingly enough, Gustavsson started the exact same number of games (22) and had the same save percentage as a 19-year-old Jesper Wallstedt did in the SHL this season.
