Evgeni Malkin Expected To Test Free Agency (prohockeyrumors.com)

Earlier today, Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic had tweeted that there was some progress in the last 24 hours between Evgeni Malkin and the Pittsburgh Penguins ...

Contenders across the league would be wise to try and add him on a short-term deal if it is possible. With new ownership and a front office that doesn’t have the same long-term ties to him though, things never progressed as quickly as expected. Still, it seemed as though the two sides would inevitably get together, given their long history together and the fact that Kris Letang was re-signed for less money than he likely could have gotten on a short-term deal.

He was worried about how hard this is on Geno with Geno not feeling wanted anymore.” Malkin, a likely future Hall of Famer and the second overall pick in the 2004 NHL Draft after Alex Ovechkin, will become a free agent for the first time in his career.

Evgeni Malkin to Hit Open Free Agent Market (The Hockey News)

Evgeni Malkin is set to the open free agent market on July 13, making him a free agent for the first time in his career.

Malkin, 35, has played his entire 981-game career with the Penguins, recording 20 goals and 42 points in 41 games this past year. Still, Malkin has played more than enough great hockey to warrant significant attention on Wednesday. Malkin has 444 goals and 1,146 points over his career, and has been a point-per-game player all but once over the past decade. According to a report from TSN's Darren Dreger, Evgeni Malkin will hit the open free agent market on July 13, making him a free agent for the first time in his career.

Malkin saw an especially large drop off when it came to creating in transition — a staple of Sullivan’s speed-oriented attack. But for the first time, they all seemed to acknowledge it was becoming a real possibility. At different points over the last several seasons, Malkin has looked like that same elite offensive engine. However, at 5-on-5 play, his 1.95 points per 60 minutes was a significant decline for his previously elite numbers. Only four players in the entire league posted better numbers over that same span. “But, you know, hopefully a little bit longer.” Malkin, who will turn 36 on July 31, will become a free agent for the first time in his career on Wednesday at noon, barring an 11th hour deal. Instead, it appears Malkin will see what offers he can garner from the other 31 teams before making his decision. At least publicly, Penguins general manager Ron Hextall repeatedly said he hoped to keep the core together. Coach Mike Sullivan and captain Sidney Crosby have both advocated for keeping the core together on multiple instances. Still, there was optimism that a deadline would bring the two sides together. The Penguins, who sit with $15.3 million in cap space, have largely kept contract negotiations with Malkin private, as is Hextall’s preferred way of doing business.

Six possible destinations for Evgeni Malkin in free agency (Sportsnet.ca)

Evgeni Malkin is without a doubt one of the greatest players of his generation, but the soon-to-be 36-year-old is about to enter uncharted territory when he ...

While it sounds strange to imagine a former MVP and Stanley Cup champion leaving the Penguins to join the Flyers, Malkin wouldn't be the first. If Miller is moved, Malkin could step in to replace some of the offence and power play time, for a more manageable contract while youngsters Vasily Podkolzin and Jonathan Lekkerimaki continue to develop. Malkin has the playmaking ability to get finishers like Fiala and Adrian Kempe the puck, but also is a threat to shoot and score on his own. It's unclear what kind of offer Malkin will be looking for in free agency but to join the Rangers he would likely need to take a bargain deal. Similar to the Rangers, the Kings jumped back into playoff contention last season — finishing third in the Pacific Division and pushing the Oilers to seven games in Round 1. But the soon-to-be 36-year-old is about to cross into uncharted territory when he enters free agency on Wednesday, a move that could see him change uniforms for the first time in his 16-year carer.

The Penguins' latest offer was reportedly a three-year, $18-million deal, but Malkin would accept that price if it were a four-year pact. He logged 20 goals and 21 assists in 41 contests, which was slightly below his career point-per-game clip of 1.17.

A day before free agency, Hextall and the Pens must find a way to repair the damage that was inadvertently caused. The problem for the Pens at this point is that they have seemed to lose the best tool of negotiation, in the form of all the good will and relationship built over the years. The Penguins ended up driving Malkin away with the way they handled and played the negotiations. Yet, it was the Letang negotiations that were on the “front burner” with reportedly little to no movement on the Malkin front for all this time. Malkin made it clear that he wanted to return to Pittsburgh for a 17th season and beyond to end his NHL days. Hextall was lightning quick to sign up Jeff Carter through his age-39 season, but slow played giving a franchise icon in Malkin a contract through his 39-year old season.

Evgeni Malkin reportedly will test free agency after Penguins talks stall (NHL)

Darren Dreger reports that Evgeni Malkin will become a free agent after talks stalled with the Penguins. Perhaps that could change, but what if it happens?

After signing Letang and Bryan Rust, you’d think the Penguins want to be aggressive in the free agent market. Perhaps the Penguins didn’t make enough of an overture to Evgeni Malkin, as Darren Dreger reports that the veteran star decided to become a free agent (“go to the open market”). There’s the question of his value. After Kris Letang signed for less money (but more term) than many expected, it opened up room for the Penguins to re-sign Evgeni Malkin — theoretically. From a selfish blogging standpoint, this is an absolutely fascinating scenario. No doubt about it, Malkin is a huge name.
