He was acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins in October 2020 for a second-round pick and a prospect, and two days later he signed a four-year, $25-million pact. Friedman: Matt Murray talks intensifying between the Leafs and Sens (The Leafs Nation)

Saying the Leafs goaltending situation is the priority for this week is becoming as tired as saying "goaltending is voodoo" and hopefully by the end of the ...

Murray buys some time, but at this point, he’s not a name that generates a lot of excitement or confidence. Murray had a lot of time to heal last year as the Sens felt comfortable running Forsberg with Gustaffson as his backup and there wasn’t any need to put an injured goaltender back into the lineup when the Sens weren’t at any risk of challenging for a playoff spot. The Leafs would need to consider bringing in another goaltender capable of handling somewhere between 30-50 games depending on how things are going. Having Murray show up to camp in his best health situation is a potential plus, but assuming he’s fine from here on out is foolish. The fact that things are still being worked out could mean there are more pieces and complications to it than just sending Murray and half his contract down the 401 to Toronto. I get the feeling that Kyle Dubas doesn’t want chasing down average goaltenders to become an annual event. The Leafs have some flexibility on questionable goaltending given the quality of the rest of the team and maybe Murray is how the Leafs will start the season and if it doesn’t work out they’ll be forced to finish different. Now looking at Murray’s actual performance, health, and the contract is where things start becoming more puzzling when talking about Murray. Matt Murray was limited to just 20 games last season. There’s also who Murray was before things went bad that is weighing heavily into consideration. The first thing we need to consider is the contract aspect and we can safely assume that no one is talking about Murray unless the Sens half that contract via salary retention. So Murray at best is a crapshoot but one with upside. Murray was a very good goaltender before he wasn’t and the Leafs clearly believe through familiarity, a shiny new goaltending coach, and not having the Sens playing in front of him the Leafs can change some of Murray’s outcomes.

Maple Leafs and Senators looking to do a Matt Murray deal: report (Pension Plan Puppets)

First it was just Kyle Dubas poking around. Then it sounded serious, and then it seemed to be off, and now it might be back on again. What you ask? This:.

Most of that good was in Pittsburgh and most of the bad was recently in Ottawa, and so this is a major gamble. The truth is, that if you look at five years of Murray’s results, he’s a good goalie. That is, Ottawa has to pay a team to take Murray. I get the temptation. The Senators are really angry, maybe angry enough to lower the price, and Murray has a very short list of teams he’d go to who could conceivably want him. Murray refused to waive his no-trade for a sweet deal to the Buffalo Sabres that would have seen him playing to rehabilitate his career. He stuck to his guns that he didn’t want to go there, and now here we are.

Forsberg is tabbed as the starter going into camp, but it might make sense to bring someone in who can push Gustavsson for the backup role. Troubled by injuries and inconsistency, Murray would likely rather stay with the Senators, but he’s the odd man out. There has been speculation on social media that if the deal does happen there’s a chance right-shot defenceman Justin Holl comes back to Ottawa in the trade. There have been suggestions the Senators might buy out Murray’s contract, but that doesn’t seem realistic. The Senators would have retained 25 percent of Murray’s salary in the trade with Buffalo. The 28-year-old will be paid $15 million in real dollars. I’ve been at the rink most days for the last month and he’s been there.

Toronto Maple Leafs: Matt Murray Rumours Force Me Off the Couch (Editor In Leaf)

I am at least impressed enough with how the Toronto Maple Leafs run their team in general to give them the benefit of the doubt if they want to acquire a player like this. I doubt this happens, and I would expect the Leafs to get a pretty good piece in return for taking on this deal. Clearly the Leafs couldn’t just take on salary to help other teams, so they must see something they like, and feel like they can pair him with another players at a reasonable cost. I am 100% against giving Campbell any kind of long term deal, but on a one-year deal I would very much like him in a combo with Murray. That might not be possible, and besides, the Leafs might not agree. Murray is 28, he has won a Stanley Cup, and he just hasn’t had a very good last few seasons.

As trade talks intensify with Ottawa, does Matt Murray make sense ... (Maple Leafs Hot Stove)

There's a good chance that Matt Murray plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs this season. With the Ottawa Senators planning to go forward with a tandem of Anton ...

The Leafs are in a situation where they should strongly consider paying for additional cap space, so the Leafs and the third team then need to agree on both retention and return. I want both of Toronto’s goalies to have a legitimate chance to win the starter’s net; Murray certainly possesses that potential. Murray was also arguably the best goaltender in hockey over a recent month-and-a-half stretch. It wasn’t his best game of the season, but I don’t think he was that bad. He posted a .923 SV% in 49 games in his first full NHL season and then excelled to the tune of a .937 SV% in 11 playoff games on the way to another Stanley Cup championship. After his first game back from illness didn’t go well, he was sent to the AHL a few days later to “find his game.” Whatever happened down there sure seemed to work; he returned to the NHL in January and proceeded to dominate for two months. In a season that started in mid-January, he was injured for part of February, March, and April: It was his first bad game (-0.5 GSAx or worse) in ages, and nobody would have thought anything of it if a disaster game didn’t follow. With early success that was frankly unheard of for such a young goaltender, Murray was widely regarded as one of the game’s best. Murray was a third-round pick of the Penguins back in 2012. The Leafs would need significant salary retention in order to make the cap hit work, but that shouldn’t be a problem. With the Ottawa Senators planning to go forward with a tandem of Anton Forsberg and Filip Gustavsson, trading Murray would free up some spending money ahead of free agency.

Toronto Maple Leafs: Thoughts on Potential Matt Murray Trade (Editor In Leaf)

With the rumours intensifying that the Toronto Maple Leafs are making a strong bid for Matt Murray; you have to wonder just how much a trade will cost.

Watch this space; whatever happens, the Toronto Maple Leafs absolutely have to get this right. He doesn’t seem to have a top-six upside necessarily but he’d be a fantastic fit in the bottom-six for a few years. However, they’re not exactly tight to the salary cap even with their expiring deals. You have to wonder who’s doing the other team the biggest favour. However, when you take a step back from that one-for-one thinking; the Maple Leafs need salary to be retained. In fact, this is a really curious state of play given both teams have something the other wants.

Maple Leafs Commentary: Matt Murray, Goalie Solution or Mrazek ... (The Hockey Writers)

The Toronto Maple Leafs seem close to a deal for Matt Murray from the Ottawa Senators. Is this trade a good idea? If so, why?

The Maple Leafs would then be responsible for paying Murray the extra salary over his cap hit, which would be not a big deal for them. He looks forward to sharing his insights about the Toronto Maple Leafs and about how sports engages life more fully. There’s word that the Senators might want a right-shot defenseman – think Justin Holl? If the Senators buy Murray out, they get absolutely nothing back in return for him. His salary-cap hit is $6.25 million over the next two seasons; however, his actual salary over the two years is $15 million. As a small-market team, their biggest concern is the actual monetary cost of the deal. According to hockey insiders, the Senators had a deal arranged with the Buffalo Sabres at the draft in Montreal last week. If they can’t find a trade for Murray, there are reports that the Senators would be willing to buy him out. When it comes to finding suitors for Murray, the Senators’ options are limited. On the other hand, Mrazek put together a record of 12-6-0, with a .888 save percentage, and a 3.34 goals-against-average. That would account for the much better win-loss record Mrazek put together. Murray put together a record of 5-12-2, with a .906 save percentage, and a 3.05 goals-against-average.

NHL Rumors: Matt Murray and the Toronto Maple Leafs - NHL Rumors (MyNHLTradeRumors.com)

Trade talk between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators involving Matt Murray has picked up. Does it make sense for the Maple Leafs?

Anthony Petrielli: “Guess we’ll see how it shakes out but trading for Matt Murray before taking a swing at signing Darcy Kuemper, who has actually been good for years now, would certainly be a choice. Some thought he could be traded to the Leafs by the end of the draft. There was some speculation that the Leafs wanted to see Murray’s medical records. Pair of Stanley Cup rings don’t hurt either.” If Murray is dealt, the Senators may then look at the trade and free agent market for a backup goalie. The Senators are trying to move Murray and acquire a right-handed defenseman.

Salary cap mechanics for a Matt Murray trade (Pension Plan Puppets)

Time for a math lesson...no wait come back it'll be okay!

For the Leafs, it’s the difference between $3.125m and $2.34m, so about $785k. Not much for them at all. Arguably, they should be getting assets with Murray because that’s what Ottawa agreed to with Buffalo before Murray’s NTC stopped it. Taking on 75% of Murray’s contract is essentially what the Leafs would have to do, except the Leafs will want to split that 75% with a third team. It’s possible this second option is not necessary, but we’re going to keep going. That cap hit is a problem, and it’s one of the presumed hangups currently going on with this progressing deal. I should know, I am a new teacher and every time I tell people what I do they tell me they suck at math and hate it. Toronto at 50%: $3.125m cap hit, $3.75m salary (each season) Ottawa at 50%: $3.125m cap hit, $3.75m salary (each season) He’s not super old, he’s not inexperienced, he’s had success in the past, and he’s not super expensive. I know, I know, but it’s true. The Washington Capitals, who did not qualify Ilya Samsonov, are signing Darcy Kuemper to probably something closer to 6. The Edmonton Oilers are signing Jack Campbell to something like 5x5.
