Five Summer League storylines to watch: Key Raptors and ... (Sportsnet.ca)

NBA Basketball is back… kind of. The NBA Summer League kicked off on Thursday evening in Las Vegas and there have already been a fair amount of exciting ...

As we know, in order to play on the Raptors you have to be sound defensively and bring a ton of energy and competitiveness, and it’s going to be no different in Summer League as these guys compete for minutes. His style of play fit what the Raptors were trying to do as a versatile and switchy defender who could play in transition and rebound with the best of them on both sides of the ball. With the roster crunch that the Raptors are dealing with, he is going to have to earn that contract by outplaying the likes of D.J. Wilson, Armoni Brooks and David Johnson. Champagnie came out of nowhere last season by earning a spot in the rotation early in the season with his energy and elite rebounding chops. Namely, Banton will need to showcase that he has improved as an outside shooting in order to help the spacing and to play both on the ball and off of it, improving on his 25.5 three-point percentage from last season and, more importantly, his 21.1 percent catch-and-shoot percent from three last season. Plus, while Banton is an elite playmaker who sees all levels of the court, he needs to improve his ball-handling in order to more effectively drive into tight areas and get more paint touches in order to leverage those playmaking instincts and spray out passes to teammates. He shot 6.3 threes a game and nailed 40.9 percent of them while getting more reps handling the ball as a primary offensive option. The Raptors have brought in a versatile 15-man Summer League roster, with everyone on the team getting a chance to compete for one of the final remaining spots on the Raptors. For a Raptors that lacks a ton of centre depth and doesn’t have a traditional rim-protector outside of Koloko, they would prefer that not be the case. Christian Koloko was selected 33rd overall by the Raptors in the 2022 NBA draft due to his upside and versatility, but the Duala, Cameroon-native sure does fit a lot of needs for the Raptors right now. Koloko averaged 12.6 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.8 blocks in 25.4 minutes per game in his junior year at the University of Arizona, winning the 2021-22 Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, Most Improved Player and was an All-Pac-12 First Team choice. The Toronto Raptors are a little late to the party, set to open play against the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday, July 9 at 3:30 pm.

Toronto Raptors vs. Philadelphia 76ers Summer League: Preview ... (RaptorsHQ)

Dalano Banton, Justin Champagnie, and Toronto's newest draft selection Christian Koloko hope to impress in the first Raptors basketball action since late ...

Brooks played well enough to earn a contract at the end of the season due to his stellar defence and occasional three. It looks like a training camp invite and if he plays as well as he did in his brief stint last season, he’ll be in a good position to snatch one of the last open roster spots. Whether it’s the undrafted players hoping to make an impression or a former NBA talent looking for a second chance, there is some considerable meaning to every minute they log in the event. Not the action of course, this is a summer league game preview after all. Maybe it’s one of the second year players like Dalano Banton or Justin Champagnie, bringing a new element of their game to the summer league stage? For rebuilding teams, a glimpse into the future.

3 Summer League players to watch as Raptors start schedule (Raptors Rapture)

These three Toronto Raptors players, including David Johnson and Christian Koloko, will be under a microscope for most of the Summer League schedule.

Considering all the injuries that he sustained over his rookie year, Toronto may be able to squeeze some value out of him on a relatively thin guard depth chart. These three Raptors will be under a microscope for most of the Summer League schedule. Johnson will likely be pitted against Brooks and Banton in Summer League, with the veteran sniper and fellow second-round ball-handler both trying to make their case for extended minutes as Fred VanVleet’s primary backup.

Christian Koloko Flashes Defensive Promise, Dalano Banton Makes ... (Sports Illustrated)

The Toronto Raptors got their 1st look at Christian Koloko who flashed his defensive skills as Dalano Banton & Armoni Brooks led the way to a Summer League ...

Those box score stats are pretty good for the Summer League opener, but Toronto is going to be far more concerned about limiting Banton's mistakes and getting that seven turnover number down as Summer League continues. It's the question that every player at Summer League is trying to answer as they vie for playing time and roster spots for next season. At 25 years old and already on Nurse's radar, Dowtin is a player to keep an eye on moving forward. He's totally comfortable dropping in pick-and-roll coverage and using his length to block shorter guards who sneak by him. The half-court offense was about what you'd expect from Toronto's Summer League team, not pretty, to put it nicely. For a moment it felt like they never left.

3 takeaways after Raptors destroy 76ers in Summer League (Raptors Rapture)

Toronto Raptors fans should walk away from their dominant Summer League victory over the Philadelphia 76ers with these 3 takeaways.

We know he can rebound and defend well, but that improved scoring is a nice feather in his cap. While letting him get free reign of the offense led to some maddening turnovers, it also showed that his shot-making looks a bit more refined this year. Toronto Raptors fans can’t really ask for much more out of a Summer League debut.

Raptors are watching Jeff Dowtin heavily in Summer League play (Raptors Rapture)

Nick Nurse and the Toronto Raptors are paying attention to the performance of scoring point guard Jeff Dowtin in Summer League play.

“We’re really evaluating him strongly.” After averaging 17.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 6.2 assists in the G League last year, it looks like Dowtin is ready to make the leap. His college and G League numbers indicate that he can get to the rim and make solid passes. Jeff Dowtin played a nice part in orchestrating the offense.

Christian Koloko Has Been Turning Heads With His Development ... (Sports Illustrated)

It's been Christian Koloko's rare developmental path since his early days at Basketball Without Borders that set him apart for the Toronto Raptors.

While the Raptors primarily used Koloko as a traditional big, dropping back in coverage to defend the 76ers’ pick-and-roll attack, occasionally Gleeson asked his rookie big to step up and switch onto the perimeter. “He can protect the rim, but also survive and hold his own if he gets switched out on onto a perimeter player because he's got lateral quickness and agility. He lacks a refined touch around the rim and polish defensively, but there was hardly any of that when Koloko first began transitioning away from soccer and onto the basketball court at 17 years old. He blocked a trio of shots and deterred a handful more, using his length to frustrate the Philadelphia 76ers in the paint. “Still really raw as a player,” said Chris Ebersole, the NBA’s Head of Elite Basketball, reflecting on the first time he saw Koloko at that 2017 Basketball Without Borders event. In his first Summer League game Saturday afternoon he showed just about what you’d expect from a seven-footer still in his basketball infancy.
