Khatsahlano Street Party features more than 50 local bands (Straight.com)

A modest idea has turned into a monumental free music blowout in one of Vancouver's most popular shopping districts.

Today (July 9), runs all day and well into the evening, featuring indie artist Hailey Blais as one of the headliners. Now, 11 years later, it's known as the West 4th Khatsahlano Street Party. And it's become the city's largest free music and arts festival, extending for 10 blocks along West 4th from Burrard to Macdonald Street. That marked the birth of what was then known as Khatsahlano!: The West 4th Music + Art Festival, which featured everyone from Yukon Blonde to Veda Hille to Nardwuar's band, the Evaporators.
