People hoping to become drivers of semi-trailer trucks are waiting longer than usual to do road tests for Class 1 licences so they can start working in an ...

If they've gone through and they truly have passed those parts of the curriculum, why are they failing the road tests?" Dhaliwal said sometimes an appointment for a test will be cancelled if the weather is too bad, but to reschedule, the student must rejoin a line of people who are waiting months. "The question I would ask is, how are people passing MELT [mandatory entry-level training], but not passing the road test? "The average age of truck drivers in Canada, according to, I believe, a 2018 report, was 55 years old. He said he calls MPI more than 100 times in a day, hoping to catch appointments that become available due to cancellations. That's my fault," Dhaliwal said.

Review of polygraph tests stokes privacy fears at cyber spy agency ... (CBC.ca)

The watchdog body overseeing Canada's intelligence agencies is looking into whether polygraph tests should be used to hire spies — but its investigation has ...

"We welcome this review and our only preoccupation is the privacy of our employees. Among other things, NSIRA is looking into whether the use of polygraph tests in CSE recruitment "is lawful, reasonable and necessary." Decades ago, NSIRA's predecessor, the Security Intelligence Review Committee, said it had "grave doubts" about the test's accuracy. All government employees applying for enhanced top secret clearance have to undergo the test. Polygraph tests supposedly track physiological factors such as blood pressure and pulse rate to determine whether a person is lying. We will continue to work with NSIRA to ensure the privacy, personal information and dignity of CSE employees is protected throughout the review process," said Koronewski.

Guaranteeing consumer protection and safety: ADAC Test and ... (FIA)

For 25 years now, the ADAC Test and Technical Centre has successfully been providing guidance to consumers and orientations to lawmakers and manufacturers ...

Here, too, ADAC is working in the interests of consumers by advocating data transparency and sovereignty for vehicle owners. Moreover, ADAC has developed a proprietary procedure for testing emergency brake assistants (EBAs). It is recognised worldwide as an evaluation system and led to EBAs being included in the General Safety Regulation as mandatory features for new vehicle registrations. Developed by ADAC in 2003, the Ecotest has since delivered 10,000 measurements that yield realistic data about fuel consumption, as well as contaminant and CO2 emissions. With almost 20 international partners, the ADAC tyre test is the world's largest independent tyre test. Over the last quarter-century, ADAC has invested just under €3.5 million in dummies, including female and infant dummies. The importance of consumer protection tests will continue to grow going forward.

New Method May Help Diagnose Parkinson's Using a Blood Test (Parkinson's News Today)

The method involves looking for disease-associated alpha-synuclein inside of neuron-derived extracellular vesicles to diagnose Parkinson's.

Results showed that overall alpha-synuclein levels were similar in people with or without Parkinson’s; however, Parkinson’s patients had significantly higher levels of the specific disease-associated version of the protein that forms toxic aggregates. Very simply, the protocol involves first using standard centrifugation techniques to isolate all of the EVs in the blood. At the cellular level, Parkinson’s is characterized by abnormal aggregates or clumps of the protein alpha-synuclein in brain cells.

The mirror test, explained: Can any animal learn to identify its own ... (Salon)

Animals whom no one thought would be able to identify their own reflection appear to be doing just that. By Nicole Karlis. Published July 9, 2022 10:00AM ...

"The mirror test is simply a tool we use to investigate one type of capacity for self-recognition / self-awareness." "Because the mirror test requires an animal to pay careful attention to the reflection of their own bodies, it may not be a good test for animals that don't use vision as a primary sensory modality or that are not necessarily concerned about inspecting their bodies up-close." "The mirror test is an experimental task used to investigate an animal's capacity for self-recognition, and has only been used experimentally for [around] 50 years," Plotnik said. While the study was criticized and deemed "controversial" by some, researchers ultimately concluded that the cleaner wrasse, a 10 centimeter-long fish that lives in reefs and lives up to 4 years, could pass the mirror test. "The mirror test is designed to provide information on whether it's possible for an animal to recognize itself in the mirror," Leo Trottier, cognitive scientist and founder of How.TheyCanTalk Research and developer of the FluentPet system Bunny uses, told Salon via email. Although it is unclear if Bunny was actually aware of her own identity in the mirror, the incident raises questions about animals' self-awareness — and whether dogs can pass the "mirror test," considered a defining test of animal intelligence that distinguishes some creatures' cognitive abilities from others.
