Isaac Howard, a winger who will join Minnesota Duluth as a freshman in the fall, became the fifth Bulldog taken in the first round of the NHL Draft.

He’s committed to play at Minnesota State in the future. David Hale was a first-round selection, No. 22 overall, of the New Jersey Devils in 2000. Despite going so late, Steve Dubinsky played 375 career games in the NHL over 10 seasons with the Blackhawks, Calgary Flames, Nashville Predators and St. Louis Blues. Plante won a Stanley Cup with the Dallas Stars in 1999. Has the ability to be shifty with the puck using quick hands — handles the puck very well. “I didn’t know what was going to happen,” Howard told ESPN after being the second-to-last selection of the first round on Thursday night. "No better time than now to whip out the white suit and get the American belt buckle to go with it. He put up 155 points in two seasons with the U17s and U18s. “I dress to impress.” Dress to impress, that's my memo." Lightning Draft Isaac Howard 31st Overall (The Hockey Writers)

The Tampa Bay Lightning have selected undersized but skilled forward Isaac Howard 31st overall at the 2022 NHL Draft.

The good thing for the Lightning is that Howard already has his near future set. Howard has committed to the University of Minnesota-Duluth for the 2022-23 season. While he is only 5-foot-10, Howard is gifted with the puck, as he has both a dangerous shot and incredible playmaking ability. So, while he may have been overlooked in a different era, Howard is everything you want from a first-round prospect. Also, despite being smaller, Howard knows how to play gritty when needed, as he will fight along the boards to win a puck battle. In many ways, Issac Howard is a poster child of the modern-day NHL developmental program.

He has a future on the second power play, but may be relegated to a top-nine role at even strength. Howard's skating is fine, but not great and that's usually a critical piece for guys who grade out under 5-foot-10. Plus his shot is strong and accurate from in close.

He put up 82 points with 33 goals in 60 games last season including six goals and 11 points in six games at the under-18 world championships. If he continues to develop along this path the Bolts may have a top-six forward ready to take the ice when some of their current stars are ready to retire. The good news is that the Lightning aren’t going to throw him into the NHL right away. One of the differences in the Stanley Cup Final was the ability of the Colorado Avalanche’s quickness in the offensive zone that had the Lightning defenders chasing them around. His skating is excellent and he uses it not only to burst out out of the zone, but also to create odd angles to shoot from. The shifty forward is also able to change his shooting angles thanks to his above-average stickwork. His play in the U18 World Junior Championships also heightened his rankings as he added six more goals and five assists in six games with four of the goals coming in one game against Canada.
