DeBrincat's name has been in the rumor mill for weeks now, and it seemed inevitable that the rebuilding Blackhawks were going to deal him before the 2022 NHL Draft because they didn't have a first-round selection. We feel as if this move sets the Blackhawks up for future success by giving us additional flexibility and future talent. "Although we didn’t have a first pick in the draft until today, our scouting staff has been anticipating this scenario.

Ottawa Senators Acquire Alex DeBrincat (prohockeyrumors.com)

The Ottawa Senators have completed a stunning draft-day trade, acquiring Alex DeBrincat from the Blackhawks.

This trade is certainly going to be widely celebrated among Senators fans, but whether this trade is ultimately successful for Ottawa could depend on if they manage to sign DeBrincat to a long-term extension. The last superstar-level player to be traded, Jack Eichel, net the Sabres a package that included NHL-ready talent such as Peyton Krebs and Alex Tuch as well as draft picks. For the Senators, acquiring DeBrincat is a major coup as the team looks to escape their rebuild and finally return to contention. The contract situation is definitely something for Ottawa to monitor, as the Senators have had issues in the past with players not wanting to sign there long-term. That being said, there is a general sentiment that the return the Blackhawks received was a bit light when one takes into account DeBrincat’s age and talent level. Davidson has made it no secret that he’d be stripping the roster bare in order to pursue a rebuild, and DeBrincat’s name had been floating in trade rumors for weeks.

Blackhawks trade Alex DeBrincat to Senators for draft picks (Sportsnet.ca)

The Ottawa Senators have acquired Alex DeBrincat, one of the top younger scorers in the NHL today, in a blockbuster trade with the Chicago Blackhawks.

He has one more season remaining on his contract with a $6.4-million cap hit and will be a restricted free agent in the summer of 2023. That trade reportedly would have included the seventh-overall pick, which the Senators then used to acquire DeBrincat. DeBrincat, 24, already has two 41-goal seasons on his résumé in just five seasons, including last season when he also set a career-high with 78 points.

Trade: Blackhawks deal Alex DeBrincat to Senators for three draft ... (NHL)

The Chicago Blackhawks have traded star forward Alex DeBrincat to the Ottawa Senators for three draft picks, including the No. 7 overall pick.

The Blackhawks did not have a first-round pick this season after trading it to the Columbus Blue Jackets in last year’s Seth Jones trade. The No. 39 pick and next year’s third-round pick might be 50-50 bets, at best, to even become an NHL player. The Senators have two years to prove they can build a winner around him and hopefully convince him to re-sign, but in the short-term they added a legit star scorer to their lineup without having to give up a single player or prospect from their organization. It should also open the door for even more significant moves in the very near future with other core players. If you are not going to keep a 24-year-old star that is already one of the elite goal scorers in the league, then that should tell you what management thinks of this team’s short-term prospects. DeBrincat has one year remaining on his current contract at a salary cap number of $6.4 million.

Alex DeBrincat trade grades: Senators add star scorer to young core ... (Sporting News)

The Blackhawks sent DeBrincat to the Senators in a package that included the No. 7 pick.

You're dealing with teams in the same situation as you and needing any and all first-round picks, as well as teams that don't have a high enough pick on Day 1. As a result, teams low-balled Davidson and he was stuck settling for the best offer. However, there's no reason for the Senators to make this trade if the intent wasn't to sign him to be a part of the team's future. The next step will be signing DeBrincat to a long-term deal, which according to TSN's Darren Dreger, was not discussed between Ottawa and DeBrincat prior to the trade. The Blackhawks did not own their pick in the first round of this year's draft and it was a goal of GM Kyle Davidson to get one. The Blackhawks were able to get some draft picks back, which was big for them.

NHL trade grades - Chicago Blackhawks send Alex DeBrincat to ... (ESPN)

The 41-goal scorer is headed to Ottawa in exchange for three draft picks. We grade both GMs on the swap.

That's the only way this trade seems to make the most sense for Chicago. DeBrincat is a player barely in his mid-20s who has been one of the NHL's most impressively consistent scoring wingers. However, the return for Chicago was also lower than perhaps expected because DeBrincat has just one year remaining on his contract before becoming an unrestricted free agent. Ultimately, the Senators want to avoid a rebuild, so flipping their first-round pick isn't a huge deal. The Senators were 23rd overall in goals scored last season (averaging 2.73 per game) and have lacked for the type of consistent top-line threat DeBrincat can be. Now the Senators can slot DeBrincat in with Tim Stutzle, and DeBrincat can help drive play at either end of the rink and be a bonafide playmaker all over the ice. DeBrincat, 24, is a dynamic scorer who has already surpassed the 40-goal mark twice in his first five NHL seasons.

Adding DeBrincat to a roster of Tkachuk, Batherson, Chabot, Norris and Stützle means the Senators suddenly have the makings of a very dynamic offensive team ...

He talked to myself and D.J. and he was really excited. “Obviously, the rebuild has been going on, we feel we’re in the next phase now.” The only downside of the DeBrincat acquisition is the business aspect. In the end, Murray declined a move to Buffalo via his no-movement clause. Not to mention the power play. DeBrincat has a contract that expires after the 2022-23 season. He was also a 41-goal scorer in his sophomore season, 2018-19, during which he scored 76 points in 82 games. For the moment, the Sens and their fans could forget about all those years of losing top players, from Mark Stone on down. And, you know, he was pretty excited. Ottawa hasn’t had a natural goal scorer like this since Dany Heatley 14, 15 years ago. With a current top line of Tkachuk, Norris and Batherson, it’s easy to see the potential for a potent top two lines. On a day that started with Senators fans irate over reports the team was going to sacrifice its seventh-overall pick as part of a deal to send goaltender Matt Murray (and most of his contract) to the Buffalo Sabres, the news on DeBrincat had them over the moon.

Senators Get Scoring Touch, but Big Risks, With DeBrincat Trade (The Hockey Writers)

The Ottawa Senators have added two-time 40 goal scorer Alex DeBrincat to their roster of young talent, and it only cost draft picks.

With this trade almost certainly setting them up with a better player than whomever they would have selected in the draft, the Senators are on their way to finding success. The Senators are approaching a situation where multiple players are going to be due significant raises at the same time. For a team that previously has refused to spend to the cap, they are rapidly approaching a time where they simply won’t have a choice. For a team that struggles to score, there is no bigger pressure relief valve than this trade. Acquiring DeBrincat without losing a core player is a huge win for management. In a rare move for the team, the Senators managed to get an elite player without a drastic overpayment.
