The Colorado Avalanche have found a new goaltender. The New York Rangers have traded Alexandar Georgiev to the Avalanche in exchange for a 2022 third-round ...

In fact, his time there has been incredibly valuable, relative to the cost that the Rangers paid. Interestingly enough, it appeared as though the Rangers were not going to issue that qualifying offer, which would have made Georgiev a free agent next week. Even if he landed a good settlement, it won’t match what Kuemper will likely be able to command on the open market, especially in a year with such a shallow pool of free agent goaltenders.

Fantasy Take: Alexander Georgiev Goes To Colorado (dobberhockey.com)

It was all but certain that New York Rangers goalie Alexandar Georgiev would be traded this offseason. Starter Igor Shesterkin has cemented himself as one ...

The Rangers have a couple of prospect goalies in Dylan Garand and Olof Lindbom who could step in as backups, but it seems far more likely they look for a veteran here. Maybe they give Adam Huska a shot coming out of the AHL, but this team has Cup aspirations, and it doesn't seem likely they give Shesterkin a backup with zero NHL experience. It is doubtful that Françouz is a lock 60-start goalie right away, so they'll look for Georgiev to be average in 30-ish starts. For now, though, this makes Françouz the 1A in a 1A/1B scenario, so look for him to blow past his career-high of 30 starts set in COVID 2021. I think he's destined for backup duty, but goalies are weird and so is this league. But if we look at his entire body of work, all 117 starts and 129 appearances, by Evolving Hockey, he's had a better Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx) than guys like Jack Campbell, Petr Mrazek, Elvis Merzlikins, and Jake Allen. Not that those are bona fide, top-tier starters, but they're all NHL goalies, and at least backups.

NY Rangers make the right call trading Alexandar Georgiev (Bluelinestation.com)

The NY Rangers traded Alexandar Georgiev to the Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche. They made the right decision for the future.

I am happy Georgiev is gone though because he wasn’t the best backup goalie. Since Georgiev is now part of the team, it wasn’t looking good for Kuemper to begin with. Alexandar Georgiev is gone!

NHL Draft Trade: Colorado Avalanche acquire Alexandar Georgiev ... (Mile High Hockey)

Georgiev’s current cap hit is at $2.4M per CapFriendly versus Kuemper’s $4.5M. A younger netminder that can be compared and work with Francouz instead of Kuemper benefits the Avs who are still looking to make other offers to guys like Valeri Nichushkin, Artturi Lehkonen, Darren Helm, and others. Alexandar Georgiev, traded to COL, has struggled in a backup role with the Rangers in the past two seasons. Played well in the two seasons before that. Sources also confirm Darcy Kuemper is out in Colorado. Pending UFA was too expensive to retain. Joe Sakic was working the landlines again, as he made a call to the New York Rangers and got a new man in net. He is only going to get better as time goes on.
