This repeated focus on her “blonde and beautiful” appearance diminishes the fact that no one – regardless of what they look like – deserved the atrocities that Sharon endured. As Matt Birkbeck and the investigators in charge of Sharon’s case detail the years of abuse, it’s hard to not feel a great deal of sadness at the tragic events she endured. By the time they moved to Oklahoma, they had shed their identities – Sharon’s name was now Tonya, Warren had changed his name to Clarence – they had married, and had a son named Michael. After years of subjecting her to sexual abuse, he eventually sexually exploited her, forcing her work in strip clubs in Las Vegas and offer sex acts as a way to earn money for him. But arguably, the saddest part of it all is the woman – in the photograph – who suffered unspeakable horrors throughout the entirety of her life, and the many others that will never be brought to justice. It detailed the stomach-churning information that the little girl in question had been kidnapped, raised as the man’s daughter, then married as his wife, bore a child, and then was killed. It is this photograph, and the elusive identity of both people in it that is the basis for Netflix’s latest true crime documentary Girl In The Picture, directed by Skye Borgman, the filmmaker behind Abducted In Plain Sight. What ensues is a truly disturbing and tragic decades-spanning story of kidnapping, murder and sexual abuse – all orchestrated by one man.

Perhaps it is a sign that we need more of these documentaries to be made by women, or perhaps just a sign that we need more of them made by Borgman. Girl in the Picture is a fine and valuable addition to a genre that collectively if unwittingly poses the question: what might have been done with all the lives, with all the joy and energy stolen by these men, who think they have a right to take whatever they want, use it and destroy it? The picture referred to in the title is of six-year-old Sharon sitting on her father’s knee with an expression that is indescribable except to say that it should never be seen on a child’s face. I have never seen a film less in thrall to a perpetrator, never seen a production succumb less to the lure of the evildoer. And one of them remembers him raping Sharon as she lay next to her during a rare sleepover at the Marshall home. We hear how FBI agent Joe Fitzpatrick is brought in to try to track them down, and discovers that an attempt to claim Tonya’s life insurance was made by someone called Franklin Floyd. He pulls on that thread, and a 20-year web of deceit begins to unravel.

Sharon was now working at a strip club where he made her proposition patrons for sex for 50 dollars a night. Sharon earned a scholarship to her dream school, but he would not let her go. Clarence eventually filed for custody and took a paternity test — shockingly, Michael was not his child. The police, though, in Oklahoma stated that there was not enough evidence that her husband did it. They did, in Alabama. But the mother did not know what they were talking about — this woman’s daughter died when she was only 18 months old.

In 1975, after spending 30 days in jail for passing bad checks, Sandi returned home to find the husband she knew as Brandon and her kids gone. Tonya was a stripper, he explained, so he was used to her being out at odd hours and hadn't been worried. While being transported to another location for medical purposes, he escaped—then managed to rob $6,000 from a bank in Macon, Ga., before he was captured. He was arrested in June 1990 and locked up for violating his parole.

We find out that Sharon’s life as Tonya was one plagued by manipulation and a father figure-turned-husband who forced her to work in a strip club to make money. While much of the film will leave you with your mouth agape and shocked at the nonsensical crimes at the centre of it, in an unexpected turn, you’ll finish it feeling perhaps a little more hopeful. We quickly get the picture that Warren was not only an unfit father but a serial abuser and terribly controlling over Sharon’s life. It was her dream and one that her friends and classmates were immensely proud of. We learn that Tonya was actually Sharon Marshall, a “girl next door” who was bubbly, fun-loving and top of her class. So when news that the same director, Skye Borgman, was bringing us a new true crime documentary, I instantly knew it was going to be a head-scratcher.

However, this release of information also brought out even more bizarre results, when a woman from the US state of Georgia contacted the FBI claiming that she knew Tonya but that she was not actually called Tonya but Sharon Marshall. This woman, Jenny Fisher, was Sharon’s best friend in school and had spent a lot of time together with her while growing up. With all this information, the FBI gathered evidence that it was on their way from Florida to Oklahoma that Floyd changed his name to Clarence, his daughter’s to Tonya, and officially married her to take on new roles and live the rest of their lives. The young boy quickly found a foster home in the Bean family, and remained with them from when he was two years old till he was six. But there were a number of things that immediately seemed odd—the doctors and nurses felt Tonya’s injuries did not match up with ones generally found in road accident cases and suspected some foul play; Karen knew that Tonya was not in a happy marriage, as she was extremely scared of her husband and she was not allowed to take her son Michael anywhere alone; and after Tonya’s death, the hospital workers told Karen that young Michael was not talking at all, and she understood that something was not right. Using the principal’s semi-truck, Clarence drove the two out to the woods, where he tied the principal to a tree, gagging shut his mouth, and then drove away with the six-year-old child. Thinking that they were talking to Tonya’s mother, the friends told her of her daughter’s death, to which the woman surprisingly claimed that her daughter, named Tonya, had passed away twenty years ago, when she was just a few months old.
