In a game that looked like a rout early, but became a nail-biter at the end, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers held on to beat the Toronto Argonauts Monday.
Another drive down the field ended in a four-yard touchdown pass from Bethel-Thompson to Markeith Ambles, but Bede’s leg betrayed him on the extra point attempt. Toronto continued to chip away at the lead just over a minute into the third quarter as Bethel-Thompson found Brandon Banks in the endzone for a 45-yard touchdown. The offence took advantage as Zach Collaros found Drew Wolitarsky for a 15-yard touchdown and the converted extra point made it 14-0. Toronto continued to move the ball, however, and cut the lead to 20-13 as Bede hit a 42-yard field goal with under 11 minutes to play after a Jake Thomas sack put an end to the drive. A promising drive by the Argos later in the quarter that got to the Winnipeg 10, was thwarted after a Bethel-Thompson pass went through the hands of Banks and into the hands of Bombers DB Malcolm Thompson, who ended up lateraling it to Taylor who took it all the way to the Winnipeg 49-yard line. Toronto would get on the board before the quarter ended as Boris Bede blasted a 52-yard field-goal through the uprights with 1:06 remaining after an Adam Bighill sack put an abrupt end to a Toronto drive.

But Boris Bede’s convert attempt was way wide left and instead of heading to overtime the Blue Bombers exited with a 23-22 decision. The next game comes quickly, with the club in Vancouver this Saturday against the B.C. Lions on Saturday, July 9th. Fortunate for the miss at the end obviously, but it was a dogfight out there. “They did a great job to make some plays and come down at the end. There will be time for that for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, even in the shortest week between games on their 2022 schedule. I’ll just say Winnipeg is living right,” said cornerback Winston Rose, who opened the scoring with a Pick-6, with a smile.

Liegghio went 3-for-3 on field goals and kicked two converts, an important night of work in such a close game. It was a bizarre way for a player to get into the end zone for a TD. A pass from Bethel-Thompson looked like it was intercepted by Bombers’ DB Demerio Houston at the goal-line. “We have to do better on offence. He was replaced by American Malik Clements at weak-side linebacker. “They were right there on the doorstep and that’s an unbelievable play by Bighill. I haven’t seen really much like that. His pass was completed to Banks, but Rose forced a fumble and Bighill flew threw the air to guide the ball into the hands of safety Malcolm Thompson, who lateralled to Taylor for a 41-yard return that led to a Marc Liegghio field goal. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeated the Toronto Argonauts by a score of 23-22 at BMO Field on Monday night. Below are my thoughts on the game. Familiar foe.
His 19-yard catch late in the fourth quarter was huge as it allowed Winnipeg to continue its late drive that ended in a 32-yard field goal from Marc Liegghio. Not only has B.C. played brilliantly over three games, but the Blue Bombers will have to go on the road and play on just four days of rest. Weak-side linebacker Kyrie Wilson left the game late in the second quarter with what appeared to be an injury to his left leg. The veteran’s contract with Toronto was front-loaded with a $40,000 signing bonus. The 24-year-old was a standout running back at the University of Central Florida and I’m curious to see if he’ll get more work in the backfield as the season progresses. You couldn’t ask for a better early confidence-builder after he struggled in back-to-back outings against Ottawa to start the season. Rose was also the defender who struck Brandon Banks late in the third quarter, causing a fumble that Malcolm Thompson recovered. Kicking used to be a hot-button issue in Winnipeg but Liegghio is quickly making fans forget about the team’s previous woes. Banks stole the ball away from Houston and made a circus catch involving his legs. Toronto should have been awarded a first down deep in Winnipeg territory but instead were charged with a turnover on downs. The 35-year-old hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down in his twelfth CFL season and now ranks second in the league with 225 rushing yards through three games. Modern analytics tell us that running backs don’t really matter — running the ball is all about the scheme and the quality of your offensive line.

The Argos need a rebound effort if they hope for a better result to close out Week 4. Bethel-Thompson was able to complete just two passes to star receivers Brandon Banks and Kurleigh Gittens Jr. Resulting in just 59 yards between the pair of receivers. Collaros completed 21 passes for 302 yards against the Tabbies but threw an interception and failed to throw for a touchdown. Both players will be key in stopping the pass and rush games. “We need to look ourselves in the mirror,”Bethel-Thompson told argonauts.ca after the loss. If there’s an area of the Winnipeg defence that the Argos can exploit, it may be in the passing game. Oliveira has seen 39 touches through his first three games and has rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown. As long as we, as a defence, can play together and make some stops and get off the field on second down and get our offence the ball to do what they do, it’s good.” The Bombers have allowed 316 yards per game in that category.
