"We're very excited to hire Rick Bowness as the third head coach of Jets 2.0," said Cheveldayoff, Winnipeg's general manager. Bowness was drafted in the second round (26th overall) in the 1975 NHL Draft by the Atlanta Flames. His NHL career spanned 173 games for Atlanta, the Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues, and Winnipeg Jets where he recorded 55 points (18G, 37A) and 191 penalty minutes. "It's amazing that 40 years after the original Jets gave me my first taste of coaching, I get to return to Manitoba to lead this talented group of players in front of such a passionate fan base." He spent the 1982-83 season as player-coach for the Jets' AHL affiliate in Sherbrooke and retired following the season to become an assistant coach for Winnipeg. He worked three seasons as an assistant with the Jets before serving as head coach and general manager of their AHL affiliate, the Moncton Hawks, beginning in 1987-88. The Stars hired Pete DeBoer to replace Bowness last month. "I'm tremendously excited for the opportunity presented to me by Kevin Cheveldayoff, Mark Chipman and the ownership group to serve as the head coach of the Winnipeg Jets," Bowness said in a statement.

Signing Rick Bowness: Jets Throw it Back with Short-Term Coaching ... (Yardbarker)

The Winnipeg Jets have found their man – sort of. And that is Rick Bowness. Yes, a familiar name to those rooted deep in Jets history, as he spent time in ...

I’ve got a lot of people that I know and a lot of people I’ve crossed paths with in the past. Having played as a defenceman for the original Winnipeg Jets back in 1980-82, Bowness made the transition to coaching shortly after. With Trotz, the team would certainly be in the mix for a postseason run – preferably one of the deep variety. This is as short of a termed ‘solution’ as one may possibly have. “I’m appreciative of this chance presented to me by Kevin Cheveldayoff, Mark Chipman and the ownership group,” Bowness said. Bowness has been on the bench a long time. From there it was off to Ottawa – and we all remember how that worked out. “I had to turn away free beer and free tickets and all that stuff,” Trotz said in a tell-all interview with NHL.com’s Tim Campbell. “Knowing that made it really tough because I saw the commitment of what Winnipeg was a), willing to do, their commitment to winning and all that and [b)], their people. His decision took many by surprise, with a number of NHL clubs lining up with offers for her services – Winnipeg included. For Winnipeg, the mantra preached is that of a ‘win now’ mentality. But his five-on-five team game has always preached strong defensive structure. I’ve talked to a number of teams that are full of good people but this one was tough for me because it’s my home province.

3 Biggest Challenges Facing Jets Head Coach Rick Bowness (The Hockey Writers)

Rick Bowness must address these three challenges if he's going to have a successful tenure with the Winnipeg Jets.

I was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I have been a die-hard fan of the Winnipeg Jets ever since they moved back to Winnipeg in 2011, which has inspired me to write about hockey and attempt to make it into a full-time career. As the team started to fall in the standings, they lost more and more structure in their play. The roster he’ll be working with won’t be known until after free agency, but he could be the coach to bring the Jets back to the playoffs in 2022-23. If the team is to have any success under a new coaching staff, those players will have to buy into what’s being preached. The Jets’ season fell apart down the stretch, as the team lacked structure and players began to look disengaged. Given the conditions of the contract, it seems as though he may not have much time to impress the management group.

The new coach of the Winnipeg Jets says the team lost its way last year but he intends to get it on the right track – back in the playoffs.

COVID-19 cases are rising again in Canada, with the two fast-spreading Omicron sub-variants known as BA.4 and BA.5 to blame. "But if you go back and you look at the roster, how competitive they were for a while, it's there. It reached the 2020 Stanley Cup final in the playoff bubble in Edmonton and lost to Tampa Bay. The former right wing ended his 173-game NHL playing career with Winnipeg in the 1982 playoffs. Bowness stepped down as head coach of the Dallas Stars after the season. "There was something missing there," Bowness said of the Jets last season. He also began his head coaching career with the Jets in 1988-89, when he ran the bench for the team's last 28 games. "Barry made the decision to take care of his family, which is an admirable one," Cheveldayoff said. It just got derailed a little bit. I would have done the same thing. It's that simple," Bowness said with a laugh, referring to Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff sitting beside him. With his resume, I would have done the same thing Chevy did.
