I’m telling you, there is no better day and no better time,” Pritzker said. Chicago's Weekend of Gun Violence Doesn't Stop at Highland Park (The New York Times)

As of early Monday morning, at least 57 people had been shot in Chicago alone over the Fourth of July weekend, nine of them fatally.

Four of them happened on Monday. Beyond Highland Park and Chicago, four people were injured in a shooting in Kansas City, Mo., and six were injured in a shooting in Richmond, Va. The shooting was first reported by local news outlets, including The Chicago Sun-Times. But it was part of a pattern: the brutal ubiquity of gun violence in a nation with more firearms than people.

At least six die and more than two dozen are injured in mass shooting at an Independence Day parade in Highland Park, Ill.

Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek said at a news conference that six people were confirmed dead — five adults who died at the scene and one other person who died in a hospital. As they waited, Martinez-Vicencio said she kept thinking of other mass shootings, including the one at Robb Elementary in Uvalde. “I never thought it would happen here,” she said. According to police accounts, the Highland Park shooting occurred about 10 a.m. local time, just after the midway point of the parade in the community’s business district. He added: “Prayers alone will not put a stop to the terror of rampant gun violence in our country.” “The shooter is still at large, so let’s pray for justice to prevail, and then let’s move on. For Denmark, which has strict gun laws, it was the first mass shooting since 2015, when two people were killed and five wounded in a shootout with police. Eight hours after the shooting, at about 6:30 p.m. local time, police announced the arrest of a “person of interest” and presumed suspect. Biden also briefly alluded to the shooting during remarks at a White House gathering to celebrate Independence Day with military families. At the same time, the Supreme Court struck down a New York state law requiring that residents show a special need to carry a weapon. Police recovered a rifle at the scene, but, unsure whether the shooter had additional weapons, ordered residents to remain indoors. Law enforcement officials had described the shooter as a young White man with long black hair and a slim build. One spectator, a father, put his young son in a dumpster for safety as he scrambled to find and shield other family members while bullets rained down.

One of the clips, which is particularly disturbing, captures the moment when the attacker opened fire from a rooftop. China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Zhao Lijian on Monday accused NASA Administrator Bill Nelson of lying “through his teeth” in response to reported comments in a German tabloid about the space competition between the two countries. The Highland Park July 4 parade shooting comes just weeks after a heart-breaking tragedy in Uvalde in Texas, where 19 school children and two teachers were killed. A 'person of interest' - Robert E Crimo III - was taken into custody shortly after the shooting and a high-powered rifle was recovered. Another person killed was Jacki Sundheim, a teacher at a synagogue in Highland Park. The North Shore Congregation Israel confirmed her death.

Highland Park Police Chief Lou Jogmen said a police officer pulled over Robert E. Crimo III about 5 miles north of the shooting scene, several hours after police released the man's photo and an image of his silver Honda Fit, and warned the public that he was likely armed and dangerous. "It was just sort of chaos,” she said. He died at the scene, his granddaughter, Xochil Toledo, told the Chicago Sun-Times. Also killed was Jacki Sundheim, a lifelong congregant and “beloved” staff member at nearby North Shore Congregation Israel, which announced her death on its website. Police also found a ladder attached to the building. They left a trail of abandoned items that showed everyday life suddenly, violently disrupted: a box of chocolate cookies spilled onto the grass; a child’s Chicago Cubs cap; baby strollers, some bearing American flags, and children’s bikes. Until laws change, it’s going to be more of the same.” The July 4 shooting was just the latest to shatter the rituals of American life. They identified no motive for the attack in Highland Park, an affluent community of about 30,000 on Chicago’s north shore. Highland Park Police Commander Chris O’Neill, the incident commander on scene, said the gunman apparently used a “high-powered rifle” to fire from a spot atop a commercial building where he was “very difficult to see.” He said the rifle was recovered at the scene. Lake County Major Crime Task Force spokesman Christopher Covelli said at a news conference “several of the deceased victims” died at the scene and one was taken to a hospital and died there. “We don’t blink anymore. “It definitely hits a lot harder when it’s not only your hometown but it’s also right in front of you,” resident Ron Tuazon said as he and a friend returned to the parade route Monday evening to retrieve chairs, blankets and a child’s bike that he and his family abandoned when the shooting began.

Highland Park Wasn't The Only Shooting This Weekend (The New York Times)

As of early Monday morning, at least 57 people had been shot in Chicago alone over the Fourth of July weekend, nine of them fatally.

In Philadelphia, two police officers were shot near the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Monday night. Two men, 27 and 25, from other Indiana communities and an Illinois woman, 20, died at the scene. But it was part of a pattern: the brutal ubiquity of gun violence in a nation with more firearms than people. The shooting was first reported by local news outlets, including The Chicago Sun-Times. Four people were injured in a shooting in Kansas City, Mo., and six were injured in a shooting in Richmond, Va. But there is little evidence to suggest that they work.
