British GP: Sainz scores maiden F1 win in action-packed race (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Carlos Sainz won a thrilling British Grand Prix ahead of Sergio Perez in a Formula 1 race disrupted by a horrifying first corner crash, protesters and a ...

The Haas driver had a look to the inside of Stowe with a couple of laps remaining and then nearly hit Verstappen with a bold move at the first part of Club on the final tour before backing out of certain contact at the final corner just a few moments later. Gasly was able to carry on relatively unscathed. Ocon stopped before Copse and the safety car was therefore called out, with Ferrari leaving Leclerc out on his aging hards despite appearing to have time to call him in, as it did for Sainz and Mercedes did for Hamilton. With Ferrari opting to leave things alone, Hamilton was soon homing in on the pair and was just under four seconds behind when Sainz was called in to ease Ferrari's quandary at the end of lap 20 to take the hards. After this, Leclerc edged clear to lead by just under a second, but was matching Hamilton's times up front and so on lap 33 the Briton was called in to make his switch to the hards, but a getting his used left-front medium off took slightly longer than normal and so it ended up being a 4.3s stop that meant he came out behind the two red cars. Verstappen quickly shot to a lead above one second, but his lead only lasted two laps as he was then slow through Maggotts and Becketts with what he suspected was a puncture picked up after running over the kerbs at Copse on lap 12, but which Red Bull later explained was damage to a small winglet at the rear of his car. Verstappen immediately pitted for another set of mediums, Sainz having already moved back to the lead and Leclerc threatening, with Hamilton not far behind after he had dispatched Norris into Brooklands on the lap after Perez stopped early on. That would soon mean Perez had to pit for a new wing, which released the battling Hamilton and Lando Norris, while up front Sainz had established a lead over a second by the time the DRS was activated on lap five of 52. There, with Leclerc obliged by Verstappen to take the outside line, the pair clashed lightly and the Ferrari had to take to the runoff before his right-front wing endplate, which was damaged in the earlier contact with Perez, flying off on the run to Copse and hitting the second Red Bull's front wing right-side and causing similar harm. But Leclerc sent a bold move to Perez's inside at Turn 4 and was able to force his way back to third, with the Monegasque driver then getting such good drive onto the Wellington straight he was able to attack Verstappen at Brooklands. But with Verstappen not backing down, Sainz was forced to hang on around the outside of Abbey but did so to thrillingly retain the lead, with Leclerc again making a slow getaway behind the two leaders, this time with Perez getting by off the line. As Leclerc was making an attempt to get back ahead of the Mercedes through Village and the Loop a couple of corners later, the race was red-flagged due to the multi-car pile-up behind the leaders at Abbey.

F1 Grand Prix race results: Sainz wins wild British GP (autosport.com)

Carlos Sainz won a thrilling British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday, overcoming his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc to score his first Formula 1 win.

The race was decided with a frantic 10-lap dash to the finish. Hamilton finally made the move for third stick into Stowe using DRS. Ferrari swapped its cars over on lap 31, with minimal protest from Sainz as he couldn’t hit the target laptime being asked of him. In a wild restart, Sainz passed Leclerc for the win, with Red Bull’s Sergio Perez surging up to second, ahead of Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes after some amazingly close racing. Meantime, Tsunoda spun into his team-mate Gasly at Village, relegating both AlphaTauris from the points and getting himself a penalty. The shunt was triggered when Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri was pinched between Zhou and George Russell (Mercedes), the latter spinning into Zhou’s right-rear tyre and sending him flying.

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz wins 1st career F1 race with British GP victory (Sportsnet.ca)

Carlos Sainz Jr. won his his first career Formula One race on Sunday with a victory at the British Grand Prix — the most dramatic race so far this season.

Verstappen is dating Piquet’s daughter, Kelly, and faced criticism from fans when he said Piquet was not a racist despite using “very offensive” language. F1 said they were being “dealt with by the local authorities.” “I gave it everything," said Hamilton, who was third in Canada two weeks ago and hoped Mercedes is on a comeback. Zhou’s car flipped upside-down and cleared a tire barrier before smashing into a fence. But a safety car came out and Ferrari brought Sainz into the pits for fresher, grippier soft tires. It began with a frightening first-lap crash and ended with intense wheel-to-wheel battles for the podium positions.

F1 British Grand Prix 2022 live: Sainz on pole and looking for first F1 ... (Sporting News)

45mins to lights out: After a rather wet qualifying session yesterday threw up a slight surprise in Ferrari's Carlos Sainz taking his maiden F1 pole ...

Elsewhere, British driver Lewis Hamilton claimed just his second podium finish of the season last time out as Mercedes begin to improve on their early season race pace. That'll be music to the ears of Max Verstappen in particular who looked lightning quick in practice 3 yesterday as he looks to steal a further march on his championship rivals this afternoon. Lap 21: Hamilton is really closing in on the Ferrari pair of Sainz and Leclerc who currently sit P1 and P2 respectively. He's closely followed by a few others as the Red Arrows fly overhead much to the capacity crowd's excitement! Crucially, he comes back out on track in P3 behind both Leclerc and Sainz, the later who now sits 4.3 seconds ahead of the British driver. His car rolled across the gravel before it flipped up over the barriers and hit the catch fencing. His Ferrari team may have asked him to stay behind Leclerc but the Spaniard ignores the orders and breezes past his teammate on the back straight. Red flag: The race will restart at 15:56 local time so in just under ten minutes time. Ocon stops on the the old start/finish straight and the full course safety car is out. Hamilton is back down into P4 as a result and is now under pressure from Alonso and Norris. Fantastic racing from all involved. But late drama was to unfold when Alpine's Esteban Ocon stopped on the old start/finish straight and the safety car was launched. After being checked up on at the circuit's medical centre, the Chinese driver was released in good health.

Fans at Silverstone watched the Ferrari driver hold onto his victory as a three-way battle ensued behind him late in the incident-packed grand prix.

And there’s no doubt we had the pace to come back to P6 today.” After barrel-rolling over the barrier, Zhou was stuck between the metal fence and tire barriers, a narrow gap with nowhere to go. The rookie and Williams driver Alex Albon, who was involved in a separate wreck, were both sent to the medical care center. “I don’t want the focus to be pointed towards my disappointing race but more towards his incredible race win and obviously a first win in Formula 1 is always extremely special. Pierre Gasly was between Russell and Zhou, but as the gap started to disappear, the AlphaTauri driver pulled back. Sainz was brought in for softs, and Leclerc commented over the radio how it would be “hard” to chase cars on soft tires in the closing stages. Binotto felt that the team’s strategy calls were “the right and proper ones at each single time,” and the only possible miscue was Leclerc staying out. “I’ve always been a team player, I will always be a team player and especially in Ferrari, I know the team is in front of me and my personal interests. “I gave myself the best chance to stay ahead, by pushing as much as I could, but to a point that I was destroying so much my front tire that it made total sense for Charles to go through, and I let him by as soon as the team told me to do so,” Sainz said. “Then we were hoping for more tire degradation on the softs, to give Charles, yeah, maybe a difficult three or four laps initially but then recovering later on, but the soft didn’t degrade as we were hoping.” Leclerc, who was the race leader, remained out on his hard tires—the only driver to still have them on when the rest of the field emerged. “I needed to stay in the race like I was trying to and then all of a sudden the safety car gave me the opportunity to get back on it.

F1 – Sainz takes first win in thrilling, incident-packed British Grand ... (FIA)

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz scored his maiden grand prix at the end of a thrilling, incident-packed 2022 FIA Formula 1 British Grand Prix disrupted by red flags ...

Ferrari’s solution was to pit Sainz at the end of lap 20 to cover Hamilton and to give Leclerc a chance to outpace Hamilton. Sainz took on hard tyres and rejoined in P3. Ahead Leclerc briefly went off track and Sainz pounced to once again take the lead. Further back, on lap 35, Norris made a pit stop for hard tyres and that handed fourth place to Pérez, though the Mexican would need another stop. The Safety Car also played into Pérez’s hands as he got a free stop, took on soft tyres and kept hold of fourth place. But the Mercedes driver’s stop was a slow four seconds and he emerged behind Sainz in third place. On lap 10 Sainz found himself just eight tenths of a second ahead of Verstappen and was reporting that the Red Bull was quicker. On lap 12, though, Verstappen suddenly slowed on the Hangar straight and Sainz and Leclerc swept past. On lap 30 Hamilton had 19 seconds in hand over Leclerc and the pit window was wide open. He rejoined at the back of the field in P17 and his pit stop freed Hamilton into fourth place ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris. Unsighted, Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel hit the back of Albon’s car and the Thai driver was sent into the wall on the right side of the pit straight. When the lights went out at the start, polesitter Sainz, on medium tyres, got away well, but Verstappen, on soft tyres, was quicker off the line and passed he passed the Spaniard as they headed towards Turn 1. And when the lights went out for the second time, Verstappen immediately put pressure on Sainz, but the Spaniard held the lead as they emerged from Turn 1.

F1 British Grand Prix: What is halo and how does it save lives? (BBC News)

Driver Zhou Guanyu says the halo device saved his life after a horror crash at Silverstone on Sunday.

"The other argument was whether it was affecting the driver's visibility, looking out of the cockpit. He says he is the latest in a series of drivers to be saved by the halo safety device. But it quickly proved its worth when it was introduced in 2018, following a campaign by the late FIA F1 director Charlie Whiting and the Grand Prix Drivers' Association.
