Cristiano Ronaldo has requested to leave Manchester United this summer so he can play Champions League football, sources confirmed to ESPN.
Ronaldo is said to view playing in the Champions League and competing for major trophies as essential. Ronaldo failed to win the Champions League with Juve in his three seasons with the Turin giants, but he lifted the trophy with United in 2008 and four times with Madrid. He was the top scorer in Serie A for the last two seasons he was in Turin and scored 101 goals in 134 appearances. Despite his stated respect and love for United and their fans, the former Real Madrid star feels he needs the motivation of playing in the Champions League in the last stage of his career.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner has told the Premier League club he wants to leave this summer, soccer insider Fabrizio Romano said Saturday.
United is apparently aware of Ronaldo's decision, but they remain "hopeful" the star player will stay. Ronaldo, who rejoined United just last year, "wants to see more ambition," according to Romano. Cristiano Ronaldo's return to Manchester United might be coming to an end already.
Cristiano Ronaldo still has a year left on his contract after re-joining Manchester United in 2021.

Cristiano Ronaldo's days at Manchester United seem numbered. After several weeks that saw his name surface in connection with potential transfers to Chelsea ...
Reports in 2021/22 indicated that Ronaldo's salary at Manchester United in the first year of his two-year deal was approximately £480,000 ($592,000) per week, making him the club's highest paid player. Despite his scoring exploits, plenty of criticism was directed at Ronaldo and his perceived inability to pressure opponents from the front line as he once did. The Blues struggled in the scoring department and could use a dependable goal-scoring center forward after sending Romelu Lukaku on loan to Inter Milan. But it also wouldn't be the worst scenario for Ten Hag to start his tenure with a slightly fresher slate. It's unclear what it might take to lure him away from United, with the club making it clear in June that it had no intention of letting him go. According to The Times in England, Ronaldo has asked to be transferred this summer should a suitable offer emerge.
Now that the soccer superstar reportedly wants out from Man U., we figure out where he's most likely to go.
The Blues have a new owner Todd Boehly, who is looking to make a splash at the helm. Count out Ronaldo moving to one of his old clubs outside of his home nation or to a country he’s never played in. Sporting is his boyhood club, playing for some level of the franchise from 1997-2003. Multiple reports have claimed Ronaldo has prioritized playing in the UEFA Champions League for the rest of his career, hoping to force a move away from Old Trafford this summer. The French giants lost in the Round of 16 with the Argentinian legend’s only season in Paris. The easy comparison is to Lionel Messi, who secured his transfer to PSG from Barcelona at 34.

As The Athletic’s Manchester United correspondent Laurie Whitwell wrote: “New manager Erik ten Hag has been preparing for Ronaldo’s presence in his team and emphasised the point at his unveiling. So Ronaldo’s desire to leave creates turbulence, especially as United are yet to secure any of their prime transfer targets. Ronaldo undoubtedly has a strong emotional tie to United — this is his second spell at the club. He was United’s top scorer last season with 24 goals in 38 games. They are still to make a signing this summer. He previously played there between 2003 and 2009, winning the Premier League three times and the Champions League once.

But in a world in which everything is pretty much Millwall, and getting worse by the day, the idea that they have some say in what’s coming might be the most hilarious miscalculation of them all. Durant? He just wants to leave Brooklyn, either because the Nets mistreated his great pal Kyrie Irving or because his great pal Kyrie Irving mistreated Durant’s faith in him and his dream of winning together. He rejoined Manchester United to relive his most glorious years, while Durant left his most glorious years in an attempt to recreate them 2,900 miles away with him as the objet de culte. Ronaldo announced that he wants to be released from the burden that is playing for Manchester United on a Saturday, which is as good a way to lose the news cycle as there is, but the news is plenty monumental, long weekend or not. He has earned the right to leave, and Manchester United has earned the right to lose him through its steady deterioration into unfunny comedy. Ronaldo also doesn’t have Durant’s fixation for stealing the Fourth of July every three years, but to Ronaldo 1) the Fourth of July actually falls on December 1, and 2) his Fourth of July is just another day lounging in wherever the nine-digit club’s version of Ibiza is located.

Point to his personal statistics, the goals and the appeal. The big reunion was also meant to see Ronaldo bring on players like Marcus Rashford and Sancho but the form of both would indicate he inhibited them. Not when a sixth-place finish in the Premier League brings the ignominy of Europa League football in 2022-23. United maintain their talisman will not be sold but it is the lack of attacking alternatives, rather than a desperation to retain Ronaldo, that currently stands as the greatest motivation to hold on.
