You know it's not the playoffs, but you have that you have that sense of energy that you don't get like on a regular, regular-season game.” You kind of, not forget, but you don't really realize it until you go to Detroit and the entire town of Windsor across the river is at the game. Yeah, that was a crazy game. During the fan-free pandemic summer of 2020 and the days of displacement in Dunedin and Buffalo last year, the Toronto Blue Jays could only wish for such raucous and encouraging crowds. But now we're here in front of our fans, our home country. “Oh, it was extremely weird celebrating something that's supposed to be celebrated here in the United States. I don't really think it had the same meaning for a lot of people,” he said.

“He gave me a call,” Martin said of the rookie phenom, “and I told him there’s a lot of hits left in the jersey. “I have a zero per cent win record,” Martin said, recalling the final game of the 2018 season, when Gibbons handed him the keys and he managed the Jays to a 9-4 loss in Tampa Bay. “I need to get it to at least .500 at some point. Once all the kids are in school, Martin will start to think seriously about returning to the game as a coach or manager. The phone rang a little bit, but I also had some family things to take care of, too, so I just ended up taking that one year off … and then I just got comfortable and I couldn’t see myself going back.” The energy was insane.” “The memories, the moments, the loud moments with the crowd involved,” he recalled. The Jays put together a wonderful tribute to the catcher who had as large a hand as anyone in the club’s 2015-16 resurgence. It was a great experience.” You could just feel the ground trembling. “The playoff games, my teammates, the coaching staff. Probably me yelling at the umpire (Vic Carapazza),” Martin said, “because he was terrible, and then the crowd having my back and yelling at him with me. The patriotic pregame ceremonies included a special tribute to Canadian and former Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin.

After Berríos, the Blue Jays got four big innings out of their much-used bullpen, with Trent Thornton, Sergio Romo — in his Blue Jays debut — and Max Castillo combining for 12 outs. “It just reminds you how cool it is, how awesome it is to play for a country, and today’s one of those days that remind you of that. “This is one of those days when it reminds you how great it is to play for Canada, play for a country,” said Montoyo, who took photos with fans outside Rogers Centre before the game. Said Biggio: “It was definitely amazing, to say the least. Keep doing what I did, just throwing quality pitches and (try to) get the hitter out.” “I told him there’s a lot of hits left in the jersey,” Martin said. The win improved the club’s record on Canada Day to 16-27 and, Montoyo, for one, was relieved his team gave the fans a good show. Blue Jays staffers suggested that Moreno wear the number because of it, and Martin spoke to him about it on the phone just days before he made his MLB debut. “You feel the energy of the crowd. George Springer technically celebrated his first Canada Day as a member of the Blue Jays last year in Buffalo. With due respect to the great western New York city that graciously hosted the Blue Jays, that one hardly counts. “I think about it every time the fans are loud and there’s a lot of emotion here,” Montoyo said. That hometown love for the Blue Jays was on full display during their Canada Day game Friday, the first at the Rogers Centre since 2019, which was Montoyo’s first year as manager.
