NHL Trade Rumors: Kevin Fiala trade talks 'intensifying' (Hockey Wilderness)

And at the tippy-top of that rumor mill, is the Minnesota Wild's very own Kevin Fiala. A player that is simply not able to remain in St. Paul because he is so ...

We’re just making assumptions here, but why some teams like the Senators, the New Jersey Devils, or even the Columbus Blue Jackets, are interested in Fiala is because he is a 26-year-old forward that can dominate in both ends of the ice and can be a long-term top-line player on a team looking to make the jump from rebuilding to playoff team. Everyone knows that he will be playing for a different team in a few months, but things might be moving towards that move happening soon. While things could be intensifying or closing-in or any other word you want to use to describe teams having more conversations, we all know that this trade will most likely happen on the draft floor in Montreal next Thursday. Especially considering that one of the major suitors, the Ottawa Senators, are willing to part with their seventh overall selection in a trade for Fiala, the Wild will want to make sure one of their preferred prospects are available at that spot.

Kings acquire forward Kevin Fiala in trade with Wild (The Athletic)

Kevin Fiala, 25, is coming off a career-best season which saw him score 33 goals and 85 points in 82 games with the Wild.

Despite Fiala's big offensive numbers, re-signing him would have made it difficult for the Wild to keep their roster together because of their salary-cap situation. It’s time to examine what the Wild could fetch for a 25-year-old talent like Fiala and what teams may be interested in him this offseason. In six playoff games against the St. Louis Blues, Fiala chipped in three assists.

Los Angeles Kings Acquire, Extend Kevin Fiala (prohockeyrumors.com)

It’s also hard to think that Fiala won’t join a line with Kopitar (and likely 2022 All-Star Adrian Kempe) as the Kings’ top unit. It’s hard to think that Fiala won’t become a spectacular fit within the Kings organization. It’s important to note an extension between the Kings and Fiala still needs to be worked out, but with the Kings having nearly $20MM in projected cap space this summer per CapFriendly (and Fiala having arbitration rights), the contract itself is an eventuality, with TSN’s Chris Johnston reporting there’s a long-term extension in place.

He scored two goals and 12 assists in 32 games for the University of Minnesota in 2021-22. The Wild are entering a salary-cap crunch in 2022-23 after buying out the remaining four years of Ryan Suter's and Zach Parise's contracts last summer. He scored 27 goals and 67 points at even strength, which is welcome for a Kings team that ranked amongst the bottom 10 in five-on-five goals last season. The 25-year-old winger played last season on a one-year, $5.1-million deal and is entering his ninth NHL campaign. ... It just didn't fit," he said, according to The Athletic's Michael Russo. The Wild now hold picks No. 19 and No. 24 in the first round of the 2022 NHL Draft. Minnesota was in a similar situation in 2021 and took goaltender Jesper Wallstedt and blue-liner Carson Lambos with its pair of first-round selections.

Kevin Fiala trade, extension details: Kings acquire rights to Wild ... (Sporting News)

Fiala and the Kings then reportedly agreed to terms on a seven-year, $55.3 million contract extension. The deal carries an average annual (AAV) of $7.9 million.

The 2019 second-round pick of the Kings was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-Big Ten. Faber also played for Team USA at the 2022 Winter Olympics. The Wild traded a player who had high value. He trailed only Kirill Kaprizov in points on the Wild and was third behind Kaprizov and Ryan Hartman in goals. Los Angeles jumped at the opportunity to improve its forward group by acquiring the Swiss winger and locking him up as a part of their future. What they gave up for him may seem like a lot, but Los Angeles had accumulated a lot of prospects. His 17 power-play points put him in a tie for third on the team.

Kings Acquire Fiala From Wild, Signs Long-Term Deal (The Hockey News)

The Minnesota Wild traded forward Kevin Fiala to the Los Angeles Kings and signed him to an eight-year contract.

So, the Wild sent him to a team with the ability to pay him what he's worth. Faber is also a nice piece to add, too. Fiala's incredible season has earned him the right to cash in.

Kings Get Desired Top-6 Forward in Kevin Fiala Trade (The Hockey Writers)

The L.A. Kings acquired star forward Kevin Fiala from the Minnesota Wild. Fiala is a perfect fit for the Kings' top-six forward grouping.

No matter what, trading for Fiala will have a ripple effect on the roster, but it will be a positive one, as the Kings have made a significant improvement. Blake’s knocked one out of the park again as he continues to prove why he’s one of the best general managers in hockey. Something that will be very interesting to see is what impact this has on the rest of the Kings’ roster. The Kempe contract is still looming and will be around $5-6 million, leaving the team anywhere between $5-6 million to fill out their roster. As mentioned, the team will have just shy of $12 million to fill out their roster. Fiala’s fit on the power play will be interesting and is maybe the one hole someone can pick in this trade, even though I don’t think anyone should. The other benefit to Fiala on this line is his incredible play driving. The part of this trade that stings a little is giving up right-shot defenseman Faber. He is a highly-touted prospect who was one of college hockey’s best defensemen last season and played a significant role for Team USA at both the Under-20 World Championships and the Olympics. However, Faber was still expendable, as were most right-shot defensemen in the team’s system. As mentioned, Fiala is an exceptional skater with high-end skill, the perfect complement to Kopitar and Kempe. I’m a huge fan of putting substantial speed on either side of an aging Kopitar, who has never been particularly fast. The Kings needed a top-line winger to play with Anze Kopitar and Adrian Kempe, which is exactly where Fiala will play. The Kings acquired Fiala for a 2022 first-round selection and prospect Brock Faber. Considering the Kings’ depth of prospects, giving up a 19th overall pick isn’t a problem. His 4.9 entries leading to a scoring chance per 60 also leads all Kings. A phenomenal skater with excellent hands, vision, and a nose for the net, Fiala is the complete package offensively.

What the Kings, Wild get in the big Kevin Fiala trade (Sportsnet.ca)

The Los Angeles Kings and Minnesota Wild kicked off trade season Wednesday with a big Kevin Fiala swap. Here's a look at what both teams get out of the ...

There was evidence this sort of breakout was coming for Fiala. During the 2019-20 season, Fiala was heating up and from Feb. 1 through to the COVID pause on the season, he was third in league scoring with 26 points in 19 games. As a prospect Fiala was projected to be a quick, fast, competitive, and skilled forward who had a chance to be a high-end point producer as an NHL player. It was a trade that had to happen for Minnesota, and Fiala's is the first name crossed off our list of trade candidates to keep an eye on this summer. "There were some trades made along the way, but the bulk of those teams were made through the draft and I think they're very well built teams. Still, if there was ever a year to do so, this is it based on some of the uncertainty surrounding player development during the pandemic. "Look at the two teams that were in the final, those teams were built through the draft," Guerin said. LA did have a surplus of right-shot defencemen, so they were dealing from an area of strength. They are trying to still push forward with what they have, are hopeful of even re-signing Marc-Andre Fleury, and between Boldy and Marco Rossi, they have some NHL-ready players to get excited about right now. The reason why the Wild, the fifth-best regular season team in the league, had to move an 85-point RFA winger was brought on by the decision last summer to buy out both Zach Parise and Ryan Suter from the remaining years of their contracts. Faber, meantime, is a homegrown player currently playing at the University of Minnesota, where he'll return next season. Kopitar and Phillip Danault down the middle. A fantastic player in transition, Fiala was second to Kirill Kaprizov in every major offensive stat category this past season.

Los Angeles Kings Swing Big, Acquire Kevin Fiala From Wild (Puck Prose)

The Los Angeles Kings made a big splash on Wednesday, acquiring forward Kevin Fiala from the Minnesota Wild for a pick and a prospect.

Los Angeles is still getting production from some of the aging players on the roster, and Fiala adds youth and scoring to help support them. Minnesota acquired a first-round pick (19th overall) in this year’s draft plus defensive prospect Brock Faber. His $7.875 million cap hit is the second-highest among LA forwards.

“It’ll be a good year for him back there (with the Gophers), and we’ll cross that bridge at the end of the season. The 19-year-old from Maple Grove, Minnesota, has grown into a strong blue line prospect over the past two seasons. Last year, he had one goal in a seven-game ouster by Vegas. He disappeared in the playoffs for the second straight year, though. The left wing seems to be a perfect fit on the top line for the Kings, who ended their three-year playoff drought last spring despite scoring fewer goals than every postseason team except Dallas. They were serious right away, so it made it easy to do a deal.”
