Tech giant owned by Elon Musk, Tesla has reportedly shown exit door to approximately 200 workers from its Autopilot team and closed an office in California as per media reports. In a LinkedIn post, Iain Abshier had said that he had “a gut punch” that he would be included in the Tesla layoffs after just two weeks of work.

Tesla Employees Start Returning To Office After Musk Ultimatum ... (India Times)

Nearly a month after Elon Musk gave a harsh ultimatum to his employees to 'return to work from office or quit', the change has begun to take place.

For the uninitiated, Elon Musk had shot an email to Tesla employees earlier this month. Tesla employees have reportedly started coming back to the office. Once employees shuttled to the office, some found there was no desk for them to work from or stable enough Wi-Fi to do their jobs.

Does Elon Musk's Latest Move Mean Tesla Is Doomed? (Motley Fool)

Tesla's layoffs include a division that CEO Musk just called "essential" to the company's survival.

Musk deserves credit for trying to streamline Tesla ahead of a potential economic slowdown, and has earned the benefit of the doubt over his years running the company. Although it seems unlikely Musk is correct and Tesla's value could drop to near zero, as an automaker Tesla is valued significantly higher than the competition. Tesla delivered more than 936,000 vehicles in 2021, and as an automaker has never looked more stable in its history. Although Tesla is the sales leader in electric vehicles, the company faces more competition now than at any time in its history. The team that was reportedly let go on Tuesday was responsible for helping to train and refine Tesla's AI. Last week, Musk confirmed Tesla was in the process of cutting about 10% of its global white-collar staff, arguing that the electric vehicle manufacturer had grown too fast and was now overstaffed.

The space crunch is so much that Tesla had to move at least one of its assembly lines to a tent-like structure at the facility. They noted that initially, it seemed Elon Musk wanted just the executives to adhere to the new policy. Also, it has a weak internet connection for high-level productivity and lacks desk space as well.

Tesla is gutting a part of its Autopilot department, cutting around 200 jobs from its office in San Mateo, California, CNBC reports.

That said, the layoffs have been shrouded in confusion, with the company even rescinding job offers it had already extended. "Both Berlin and Austin factories are gigantic money furnaces right now," Musk explained during a June interview. Musk also announced earlier this month that Tesla is cutting ten percent of its full time employee headcount because he had a "super bad feeling" about the economy, though he also insisted that the company was also in the process of hiring, resulting in a total headcount reduction of less than ten percent.

Tesla tracking employees who haven't 'badged in' to office: email (Business Insider)

Tesla is tracking office attendance by monitoring how often workers use their badge to sign in. The carmaker sent emails to employees who have not 'badged in' ...

Tesla is not the first to start tracking employee sign-ins. On Monday, The Information reported that Tesla employees were having difficulty finding desk space and parking spots at Tesla's Fremont factory amid Musk's bid for Tesla's nearly 100,000 person workforce to fully return to the office. A Tesla employee confirmed to Insider the authenticity of the email. The billionaire has said the move is part of an effort to promote equality between factory workers — who were required to work in person throughout the pandemic — and executives. Neither Blind user responded to a request for comment in time for publication. "This is an automated notification," the email read.

Most of the Autopilot employees laid off Wednesday were hourly workers, which came as a surprise to many since last week Musk had outlined a plan to boost hourly jobs, Bloomberg reported. At the end of last year, Tesla had almost 100,000 employees, according to Reuters, but it is unclear how many of those employees are salaried and how many are hourly workers. The layoffs, which were first reported by Bloomberg, are the latest in a string of job cuts taking place in the company after Musk told Tesla executives the company needed to stop hiring and reduce headcount by 10 percent.

Elon Musk escalates Tesla's war on working from home (Telegraph.co.uk)

Tesla staff receive automated demands for explanations if they fail to go into the office often enough.

In the past, the Tesla chief executive has suggested employees should work 100 hours a week to “change the world”. Mr Musk has been outspoken in his dislike for remote working, saying earlier this month that Tesla staff working from home “ should pretend to work somewhere else”. The electric car-maker has said staff should spend at least 40 hours per week in the workplace before being eligible to work remotely. I can't quite put it into words why it bothers me, it feels like it's an overstep.
