Letters June 29: Protests can spur retaliation; protesters do what ... (Times Colonist)

When protesters lead to retaliation. Re: “Protesters are straining the social contract,” column, June 26. Lawrie McFarlane's column is right on the money.

He was told to talk to the purser and ask if they could be of help. That is speed bumps, the bigger the better. Just compare the ease of entry and exit from the new ladders to the ones on the old dock. Or stand on any section of the new dock with lots of people coming and going to feel the stability. If not, then let’s not pour hundreds of thousands of dollars in signage and expect a positive outcome. Can we trust that the true Canadian story will be represented, or will other messages and minority groups take precedence to dim the Canadian landscape of the past? The museum showed us the “then” and “now,” and allowed us to grasp the profound advances in knowledge and technology over the past 100 years. What a christening for the new dock. Why tear out the heart of the museum? What happened to the third-floor exhibits? Very simply, since it is based on a complicated calculation, the wet bulb value is a mix of temperature and relative humidity that at a certain point will hinder the human ability to cope with heat. Federal and provincial government scientists should have the means to take accurate wet bulb measurements.

Brad Kwong new owner of BCHL's Nanaimo Clippers (Times Colonist)

But Brad Kwong of Calgary fashioned his own Ivy League script and a love for hockey at Harvard as captain of the NCAA Div. 1 Crimson in the 1980s. That was part ...

Former head coach Darren Naylor was ordered off the Nanaimo bench in February for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs on league-mandated administrative leave for allegedly breaching the BCHL coaches code of conduct, although the league has offered precious few details about the situation or the investigation. He wasn’t Ryan O’Neal and it wasn’t that Love Story. But Brad Kwong of Calgary fashioned his own Ivy League script and a love for hockey at Harvard as captain of the NCAA Div. 1 Crimson in the 1980s. The Clippers overcame a season of turmoil to reach the final. Nanaimo reached the league final for the ninth time in its five-decade franchise history. Kwong, son of the late legendary Canadian Football League running-back and former Alberta Lt. Gov. Normie Kwong, joins his cousin Graham Lee as an Island junior hockey club owner. He is involved in a different development path than his cousin Lee with the major-junior WHL model.

Councillor challenges Colwood mayor for top job (Times Colonist)

Councillor challenges Colwood mayor for top job ... The Colwood council table will likely have at least three new faces after October's municipal election, with ...

“And hopefully as you see those increases, we’re going to be building the infrastructure behind that to support that.” “I see that that’s where we’re going to be in 30 years,” he said. “During my time as a councillor here, I’ve been that one guy that’s always fought taxes and tax increases,” he said. We’re going to continue to add housing, but we’re going to do it in a systematic way,” he said, which means gradual increases of traffic. “We’re thinking about 30 years from now, and we’re making sure that we’re putting the money away today so that when things like that have to be replaced, we can,” he said. “We will have Royal Beach in Royal Bay completely built out and we’re not going to have the land available to have a ferry system.”

NDP cabinet minister accused of conflict of interest (Times Colonist)

Josie Osborne, B.C.'s Minister of Land, Water and Resource Stewardship granted $15 million to the purchaser of her husband's investment property.

The complaint about Osborne would be the first B.C. political scandal involving gardens in more than 30 years. Marine biologist Osborne is the former Tofino mayor who was elected the Mid-Island Pacific Rim MLA in 2020. “But… change is also part of life.” She became the Minister of Municipal Affairs and, earlier this year, was shuffled to the ministry sometimes referred to as “Land WARS.” According to Osborne’s public disclosure summary, Patterson may have used some of the proceeds of the land sale to buy shares in pipeline companies Fortis and TC Energy, parent of Coastal GasLink. On Sept. 27, 2021, he also bought shares in Loblaw, BCE and Algonquin Power. The form is a summary of what is provided to the conflict of interest commissioner, but does not list quantities or dollar amounts. The BC Liberal opposition has complained to the conflict of interest commissioner after an NDP cabinet minister granted $15 million to the purchaser of her husband’s investment property.

How do we stop looking at grey hair as a tell-tale sign of aging?

But wrong, because it saddens me to think someone is suffering so much that they are withdrawing, as opposed to leaning in to their people. I hope you’re both right and wrong. She’s embraced her hair colour just as she’s embraced every other part of who she is. If you haven’t had a haircut since COVID, you need one – for the health of your hair. And ask the hairstylist to help you find a cut that suits your face, hair colour and lifestyle. But to her, hiding the grey meant looking her best, and more her age. She’s been fully grey for over six years now and says her hair is lusher and more beautiful than ever. Summer is upon us and I want to start going out to social events. But the real question is, how do we stop looking at grey hair as a tell-tale sign of aging? I’d really love to meet someone new and I’m ready to start a family. As you say, it’s expensive and a time-suck. But I realized I saved a ton of money.
