Only Murders In The Building starts season two by getting the ... (The A.V. Club)

In its two-part return, Hulu's OMITB looks into the past to solve Bunny Folger's murder in the present.

It’s only been two episodes but they’ve already kissed and the show has dispersed off Oscar (Aaron Dominguez), so it looks like Alice is here to stay. It’s also a good callback to Charles and Mabel’s conversation about his father in the series premiere (incidentally, they were trying to break into Bunny’s house during this talk). The trio meets Bunny’s mother, Leonora (Shirley MacLaine), who wants to collect the expensive painting. She needs to move on from the deaths of Zoe, Tim, and Bunny, but even she’s pulled back into the podcast because she needs to clear her name. All the suspense-building feels familiar compared to season one so far, but that’s not a bad thing. In fact, the deep dive into Arconia’s past is just a smart way to enhance how the show thrives in subverting true-crime expectations without necessarily mocking them. This particular suspense was teased all the way back in the opening moments of the pilot when Oliver and Charles (Martin) rush into Mabel’s (Selena Gomez) apartment to find her hunched over a dead body. She wants the rights to their podcast to turn it into a TV show on season one’s killer, Jan (Amy Ryan). Mabel wants to pursue her career as an artist away from her dark past. OMITB continues to capitalize on their connection, which only grows stronger since they’re prime suspects in the murder of Arconia’s audacious board president Bunny Folger (Jayne Houdyshell), a.k.a. the dead body Mabel was staring at in her apartment. It’s clear that OMITB is sticking to its winning formula of letting the three leads disarm us with their banter. Their terrific performances make even the slow-paced red herrings, à la an Agatha Christie novel, seem like fun—whether it’s Amy Schumer playing a shady version of herself, or the discovery of Bunny’s sassy talking parrot, Mrs. Gambolini. The first episode, “Persons Of Interest,” is mostly a noteworthy setup for why Oliver, Charles, and Mabel—or Olimabel, the Charles is silent—should make a sequel to their podcast. Even though Detective Williams (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) lets them go after interrogations, urging them to find a new hobby, the damage is already done. They’re now famous podcasters and infamous perpetrators on the quest to solve yet another case.

Only Murders in the Building Season 1 Recap: Who Killed Tim Kono? (Den of Geek)

Before Charles, Oliver, and Mabel delve into another murder mystery in Only Murders in the Building season 2, let's go over the first case that brought the ...

With Mabel, Oliver and Charles being arrested and removed from the Arconia in handcuffs, what is to become of our heroes? Oliver and Mabel find the ring in Jan’s apartment, confirming their theory, but not before Charles was poisoned (only slightly) by Jan. But in a brilliant move befitting of Brazzos, before he fell victim to the same muscle paralysis Jan used on Tim, Charles recorded her confession. Among the paraphernalia was a mysterious device that Oliver and Mabel discover is a bassoon-cleaner. A frantic Oliver and Charles shuffle down flights of stairs to find a bloody-Mabel hovering over a body wearing their tie-dyed podcast merch. On the faithful New Years’ night of her death, Theo asked her to return the ring, feelings were hurt on both sides of the conversation, it got heated, and Zoe was accidentally pushed off the building. Before Tim’s apartment is cleaned out, Mabel sneaks in one last time and looks at the dozens of Hardy Boys novels Tim has stacked on his bookshelf. Oscar, having been released from prison for the death of Zoe, joins the team to help clear his name, and possibly solve Tim’s death. The three, still riding the high of the last podcast episode, decide to sneak back into the building to check it out. Charles settles at a restaurant across the street, and begins to map out the clues from the new podcast episode. Just as colorful, but perhaps more reserved with her exuberance is Mabel (Gomez), a young woman who doesn’t reveal exactly who she is, or what she does, only that she has ongoing fantasies of one day taking a knitting needle down the bone on anyone who dares attack her. Giving this duo a third corner of comedy is Selena Gomez, who injects the main cast with youth and millennial-appropriate sarcasm. With the first season’s deadly enigma being solved, the three amateur sleuths didn’t get much time to celebrate, as a second hurried and horrific homicide happened within mere moments.

'Only Murders in the Building' Shines With Selena Gomez's Career ... (Variety)

Selena Gomez does career-best work in this new season of "Only Murders," also featuring strong turns from Steve Martin and Martin Short.

(If the actual podcast element of “Only Murders in the Building” seems to have fallen away somewhat, with characters less frequently seen recording, it’s counterbalanced by a show that feels richer and deeper elsewhere.) But this is a show that’s operating on all cylinders — one that sidesteps the sophomore slump while balancing close character work with a world that is lovingly drawn. The gestures towards the aesthetics and concerns of classic issues of the New Yorker on “Only Murders” aren’t just pretension; there is a crisp short-story air to individual installments probing the psyches and histories of our characters.

'Only Murders in the Building' Returns to the Scene (The New York Times)

Only Murders in the Building” is the latest series to explore the mystery: Does a good first season always need a sequel?

If what you want from “Only Murders” is to watch its characters do more of the same things that made you laugh the first time around, then the new season is a good time. Instead, Season 2 of “Only Murders” is entertaining in pretty much the same way as Season 1, which is both its strength and its weakness. Oliver still subsists entirely on dips and the power drink “Gut Milk”; Charles is chasing a career revival, playing the elderly “Uncle Brazzos” in a reboot of his old show. As for “Murders,” it is, after all, a detective story, a genre that is set up to deliver case after case. If this were “Brazzos,” returning to a formula would be no crime. Elizabeth Meriwether’s “New Girl” was a natural multi-season series, but she has said that her Elizabeth Holmes docudrama, “The Dropout,” should not force a second season after its completed first one. The American version of “The Office” had arcs and breadth of character that sustained it for years, whereas the darker British “Office,” more focused on its central miscreant, would have grated at more than two brief seasons. TV fiction, once a machine designed to keep running until the network accountants said, “Stop,” was now making lots of different kinds of stories, best told at different lengths. “Only Murders” is a smart show — smart, as its New Yorker-esque opening titles suggest, is its brand — and it must know what it’s doing here. “What We Do in the Shadows” no more needs an expiration date than its undead characters do. “Made for Love,” also based on a novel, was inexplicably made in duplicate, and soon canceled. “It’s very rare for a true-crime podcast to do a sequel,” he says.

Only Murders in the Building trio warns you should 'be ... (EW.com)

EW got 'Only Murders in the Building' stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez to tease season 2. The trio warns that you should "be suspicious of ...

It's just that we as investigators keep being led down the wrong path and the audience goes with us." "Every time a new character comes on, we're very suspicious of that character." Short, meanwhile, warns that you should "be suspicious of everybody," to which Martin agrees. "It was really wonderful to see how that journey played out through the season." "Now we have rival podcaster who continually casts suspicion on us — and by the way, it doesn't hurt that that's played by Tina Fey. It creates another element in the story that we have to be on guard against." "I don't start dating a murderer again." Martin laughs as he recounts a story about how he was recently recognized while walking down the street in New York even thought he was fully covered up with a hat, sunglasses, and face mask by a fan of this show, and he reveals their characters are going to be dealing with that same kind of notoriety this season. "I like that we got to follow the logic, that as we became suspects and we have a podcast, we actually became more famous as people in New York City," he says. Then she meets Alice, Cara [Delevingne]'s character, and she ends up falling in love with her." "One of my favorite jokes in season 2, it's a very small joke but I'm putting up the murder board of list of suspects and I put up a card that says, 'Me,'" Martin says with a laugh. "Trying to live up to something that's a big success, there's always a little extra pressure," Short tells EW. "But once I started reading the scripts and realizing how well they were crafted, then you just get excited, like you did [in] the first season, about shooting it." If they thought solving a murder in their Upper West Side co-op for their podcast was difficult enough in season 1, they are most definitely not ready for how being named the No. 1 suspects in cantankerous co-op board president Bunny's (Jayne Houdyshell) homicide is going to turn their lives — and podcast — upside down.

Only Murders in the Building Season 2 Cast: Meet the New Tenants (Den of Geek)

Lucy (and Colletti) is a welcomed addition to the Arconia, if only for a little while. Only Murders in the Building did extremely well to create rich characters who all have their own mysteries and subplots. Rapaport’s injection of street-level Upper East Side edge is a great balance with the softer, affluent socialites who live in the Arconia. Alice notices the mural work Mabel spent all of last season working on and decides to invite Mabel to become a new key member of Alice’s commune of artists. Throughout the show, Short is often the biggest personality in the room, or sometimes it’s the quirkiness of the side characters that steal the show, but in the first minute MacLaine’s Leonora is introduced, the scene becomes hers. Cameos from the likes of comedians Tina Fey, Jane Lynch, Nathan Lane, and musical legend Sting rounded out a solid cast of quirky supporting characters living in the Arconia.

Only Murders in the Building Season-Premiere Recap: A Whole ... (Vulture)

But even after the Dimases and Jan were arrested, Mabel still felt there were loose ends; unlike Oliver and Charles, she couldn't readily accept a happy ending.

With the launch of Only Murderers In The Building (as teased at the end of season one), Cinda Canning (Tina Fey) and her lookalike collaborators (including one played by Anne Stringfield, Steve Martin’s wife) are now in direct competition with the OMITB crew. It’s a good sight gag and a fun sequence overall, but it’s also a callback in a premiere episode that’s overloaded with them, which could become a problem down the road. At one point, Cinda and her doppelgangers knit and speak ominously to Mabel about the future (through their podcast, that is), looking like the Fates by way of Williamsburg. That establishes a pretty clear objective for the second season of a hit series, but Only Murders is as haunted as Mabel is. Who texted Oliver and Charles to warn them, and did they also text Mabel? Did Jan kill anyone else at the Arconia? And at what point did Bunny buy some branded podcast merch? She had no idea that her old friend was trying to take down the dippin’ Dimases, Teddy (Nathan Lane) and Theo (James Caverly). But even after the Dimases and Jan were arrested, Mabel still felt there were loose ends; unlike Oliver and Charles, she couldn’t readily accept a happy ending. They’ll have to clear their names if they want to reap the rewards of renewed relevance and newfound notoriety. That was never really the case for Mabel, who knew the previous victim, Tim Kono (Julian Cihi). When she returned to the Arconia, ten years after the wrongful conviction of her good friend and fellow “Hardy Boy” Oscar (Aaron Dominguez), she may have just drifted back there, but Mabel tried to get Tim to do the right thing. The veteran actor and his podcasting pals, Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) and Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), didn’t have celebrity on their minds when they first started making their podcast (well, Oliver probably did), but they’re about to find out the difference between fame and infamy in season two of this delightful Hulu series. Charles thought Jan was his way out of self-imposed isolation, but he couldn’t have been more wrong: It was Oliver and Mabel who had rekindled something inside of him he thought was long dead. This time, the victim was Bunny Folger (Jayne Houdyshell), the no-nonsense president of the tenants’ board, and Mabel was the wrongly accused. Just as they were being celebrated by the people who had just voted to evict them from their beloved Arconia, the amateur sleuths stumbled into another murder in their building.

Only Murders in the Building Recap: Affairs to Remember (Vulture)

The show is less subtle when it comes to Mabel, who, at Alice’s behest, destroys a sculpture of herself to tear down the past, I guess? Alice is supposed to be an intriguing new romantic prospect for Mabel ( not hard to see why), but she recalls Oscar in certain ways (she’s much better dressed, though). We don’t know if she’s good for Mabel, and she’s definitely hiding something. That line offers some of the smartest and subtlest commentary on the true-crime genre in the season so far. She knows exactly what she wants out of life — a painting, a cocotini (made with coconut liqueur, not, as Howard thinks, chocolate), a lover — and she goes after it. When Oliver goes off on one of his name-dropping binges, Mabel provides the perfect button for the moment: “Okay, you must ask permission to tell stories from now on.” And Charles’ typically crisp pronunciation makes “Is that a shadow or a tiny bit of his balls?” one of the funniest line readings so far. Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin are one of the best ensembles on TV right now, and it’s a joy to watch their characters alternately bicker and support one another. The season-two premiere of Only Murders in the Building went out of its way to reassure audiences that this is the same show we fell in love with last year, piling on the in-world references like so much hummus on a chip. (She should’ve asked her Trainwreck co-star LeBron James for tips.) That said, I would probably watch a show where she tries to play Amy Ryan while little Timothée Chalamet does his best Martin Short. Last season, Tim Kono’s backstory was revealed gradually: parts of his childhood, the life-altering decision he made as a young adult, his quest to make things right, and finally, his death at the hands of his ex, Jan. The Arconia was the site of it all, and the place where he redeemed himself after betraying his good friend Oscar. This building is so much more than a backdrop for tragicomedy; it’s a world unto itself, and it has an even bigger role to play in season two. He was there when his father was arrested, dragged out of that same building near the Arconia in a blood-stained shirt. The story of Bunny Folger, we’re told, is tied to that of the Arconia itself, but in a much more direct way than for the other residents. What was once just lively meta-humor is beginning to feel apologetic, especially now that there’s a whole other team of podcasters (admittedly, Cinda Canning et al.

Only Murders in the Building season two review – a brilliant layer ... (The Guardian)

This clever, arch comedy whodunnit crams in way more than ever before as it returns for its second season. Its fantastic guest roster alone – Shirley ...

The brilliance of this show is that you want to solve the mystery as if it were a thriller, but you get all the pleasure of it being a comedy, too. Putting the art world into the story makes for an easy target when it comes to satire, and as with Only Murders’ generation-gap comedy, it can be ever so slightly obvious. There are flashbacks and period episodes, and still, there is room for slapstick involving a knife. Mabel becomes internet-famous and is nicknamed Bloody Mabel, which leads to some interesting riffs on notoriety (and reminded me of the much-missed Search Party). This second season, not as finely balanced as the first but still a lot of fun, pulls at those loose ends until they unravel, then unravels them more. The meta murder mystery was an elegant charmer that combined a meaty crime plot, New York’s crotchety appeal, good physical comedy – watching Steve Martin roll around in a lift for half an hour is a total delight – and a sly self-awareness, all of which made for a classy debut.

Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez don't miss a beat in getting back on the case in the second season of the Hulu series.

Plus, they have new cameos to spice up the proceedings, like Amy Schumer as Amy Schumer, who immediately pitches the beyond-receptive Oliver on the idea of transforming the podcast into a limited series, because, well, showbiz. While the show perhaps inevitably doesn't feel quite as fresh this second time around, it gets plenty of mileage out of those small touches and the general obsession with true crime. Having solved the murder that occupied their first adventure, the unlikely trio of Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) turn their attention to the next one of their neighbors to turn up dead.

Review: 'Only Murders in the Building' makes magic again in Season 2 (USA TODAY)

Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez return for another marvelous, madcap season of mystery in "Only Murders in the Building."

The central trio is more adept in comedic timing, but the new episodes feel more like a continuation than a new chapter. Seeking to clear their names even as they try to move on with their lives, Mabel, Oliver and Charles resurrect their true-crime podcast for a new season and look into what happened to Bunny. The investigation takes surprising turns that reveal big secrets from their pasts, from the dalliances of Charles' father to Mabel's alleged history of violence. It's still a dull and dreary New York winter in the world of "Only Murders," but this singularly congenial show has an uncanny ability to lift your spirits even as it deals with death and mayhem.

Once again Gomez, dry and deadpan and funny in her own right, is the perfect foil, and provides the balance that helps make the show — notwithstanding the old-guy jokes, including Charles and Oliver finding out the same doctor worked on their knees — feel ageless, a series for everyone. One feels grateful for this example of septuagenarian comic actors working energetically at the top of their game, in a successful show that plays to their strengths — Martin’s cracked sweetness, Short’s hyperkinetic self-regard — not just for what it means for show business, but the world at large. (The show is funny enough that it can afford not to be funny all the time.) Lucy (Zoe Colletti), Charles’ virtual stepdaughter from a former relationship, previously unseen but significant in her absence — he daily makes omelets in her honor, but makes contact only at the end of the first season — shows up in person; we get a glimpse of his father, too, in flashback scenes, as we will of Mabel’s dad. (There’s a nice blink-and-you’ll-miss-it visual joke, a package being loaded out labeled “Sting’s rainsticks.”) Schumer runs into Oliver in the elevator and, after declaring herself a fan of his podcast (“So raw, all of you, and not afraid of bombing, really wasting people’s time”), asks, “Would you ever consider selling me the rights to the podcast so I could turn it into an eight- to 10-episode streaming series with exclusive internet content leading to gamification?” Premiering Tuesday on Hulu, it is in many ways a model second season, giving you more of the same, but different, making use of all the resources established in the excellent first to create something even richer in character and emotion. In a flash, they go from tabloid famous to tabloid infamous — which is good enough for Oliver, who lives for any kind of recognition.

"Only Murders in the Building" Season 2 review on Hulu (Salon)

Season 2 counts on our sentimentality for Oliver Putnam, Charles Haden-Savage and Mabel Mora more than the mystery. By Melanie McFarland.

"Only Murders in the Building" could never claim to be understated. Martin, Short, and Gomez have impeccable comedic timing, but their characters are attuned to the sense of loneliness and vicarious existence enveloping millions of us over the last few years. Many will see this as nothing but vamping, a thought echoed by their "Only Murders" groupies. The new season of their "Only Murders" exploits requires them to be personal in front of the public, since Tina Fey's superstar podcaster Cinda Canning decides to insert herself into their lives to add drama for her podcast. Yet after viewing eight episodes, I'm not entirely convinced they'll weave together tightly enough to make a second viewing of the season its own distinct pleasure. Oliver wants to hold on to his return to the spotlight, however limited, while also making a few extra bucks. Nobody expected her to complete them instead of merely fitting in with their established chemistry. Cara Delevingne's casting as Alice Banks, an artist who takes an interest in Mabel, slides somewhere into the middle on the scale of noticeability; given where her storyline goes, we get why the producers leaped at the thought of pairing two very famous and glamorous millennials onscreen. "They usually move on a new case that never hits like the original . . . so, you know, we have a real opportunity here." Most apartments or condominiums have distinct echoes and whispers, but in the first and second seasons of the show, we're reminded of The Arconia's harmony. The "Police" frontman's residency at the Arconia is an inspired bit, allowing him to showcase his comedic chops along with embracing his reputation as a deadly serious, pompous artiste. Here, for the time being, the mystery-driven comedy's trust in the audience's affection for Oliver Putnam, Charles Haden-Savage, and Mabel Mora, along with the actors who play them (Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez, respectively) remain its greatest asset.

'That Kiss?!' and Other Thoughts We Had During Only Murders in ... (ELLE.com)

Selena Gomez and Cara Delevingne shared a kiss in episode 2 of season 2 of Only Murders in the Building. Here's what you (and we) had to say about it.

When Uma drops Bunny’s parrot off to live with Oliver—apparently his guardianship of her pet was one of Bunny’s dying wishes—the parrot has some wisdom to impart: “I know who did it.” Oh, Mrs. Gambolini, pray tell! A generous interpretation of this scene would argue the writers are acknowledging Mabel’s ability to grow, to shed her “mildly stand-offish millennial” archetype in favor of expanding her art and her relationships. There’s no Bridgerton-level heat, to be sure, but Only Murders isn’t trying to argue that Mabel’s a good time in bed, just that she’s figuring out what a new phase of her life might look like. Finally, episode 2 wheels us back around to the present, and we watch Charles spiral as he questions why, exactly, his father is the subject of a titillating piece of paint pornography. He’s sporting an inconspicuous shiner around his left eye, which he blames on his cats before inviting the podcast trio over to a “gathering” in Bunny’s old unit. First, let’s remember there’s a murder mystery at hand, and it seems its conclusion will have as much to do with where the killing took place as who did the stabbing.

Only Murders in the Building season 2 review: dying to live in New ... (Polygon)

Hulu's Only Murders in the Building starring Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez returns just as funny, and just as mysterious, in season 2.

Through these people and their stories, you learn how the city has changed and where it might be going, who was allowed to be in a neighborhood and who was kept out. One of the markers of a good television show is in how well it implies a world around it. That second corpse brings a twist to Only Murders in the Building’s second season: This time, the heroes are the prime suspects. Only Murders in the Building is set in the Arconia, an apartment building in Manhattan’s wealthy Upper West Side neighborhood. Across 10 episodes, the series pulled double duty, both gently roasting true-crime aficionados while also constructing a compelling mystery in its own right, doling out jokes and intrigue in equal measure. But most formidable is its skill in conjuring a whole world out of a single building, and how pleasant it is to inhabit that world for 30 minutes at a time.

"I thought it was beautiful and really well written, and I'm very excited,” Selena Gomez says of her onscreen romance with Cara Delevingne's Alice.

“There's a bit of that feeling where you're excited to be in their presence and you hope they're wonderful.” “I was so grateful, because it means a lot to me to represent the community in such a fun way. “I loved how it's portrayed because a lot of the times with queer characters it takes such a spotlight instead of just being part of the whole story. “She has a bit of a mask on. Alice “has a couple of secrets,” Delevingne says. “We met on the side of a green, grassy hill running around in our clothing,” Delevingne remembers.

So not only could “Only Murders” allow Lane to enter the history books for receiving the most nominations in the category, but it could potentially also make him a Primetime Emmy winner for the first time in his lengthy, storied career. Should it come to fruition, working in the actor’s favor down the line is the fact that “Only Murders in the Building” is airing its highly anticipated sophomore outing during Phase 2 of Emmy voting. But Lane’s duplicitous turn as a wealthy patron of Oliver’s (Short) who agrees to sponsor the podcast within the show but is revealed to be harboring dark secrets of his own, provides a compelling, memorable alternative. A three-time Tony winner, Lane has yet to win a Primetime Emmy (he is the recipient of two Daytime Emmy Awards). However, it’s not for lack of recognition. So if Lane can snag a nom for his performance as Teddy Dimas, a fellow Arconia resident and purveyor of dips (and presumably other things sold at delis), he’ll own the solo record at six. Only Murders in the Building” is an embarrassment of riches.

Her quick run-in with the fake painting is probably the last of her involvement with the case. The newfound fan of "murder...podcasts, murder podcasts" is even interested in adapting the show for the screen, and she quickly wins over showman Oliver. It's a fun role, but she's definitely more of a side plot than a suspect. Howard doesn't have nice words for the expectant mother, with him telling the trio, "If you thought Bunny was a bitch, wait 'til you get a load of this one." If she's involved in the murder, that's a very impressive poker face, especially in front of Bunny's glamorous mother (played by screen legend Shirley MacLaine). Both the needle and Bunny's painting have planted to frame our main trio for the murder. Hulu's comedy whodunnit Only Murders in the Building is finally back, and season 2's murder investigation is moving quickly.
