2022 NBA Draft: Report: Toronto Raptors sign UDFA Ron Harper, Jr ... (RaptorsHQ)

The son of five time NBA champion Ron Harper comes to Toronto on a two-way contract.

The comp that comes to mind for me, then, is PJ Tucker — which is not a bad way to start your NBA career. A forceful scorer and strong defender, Harper Jr. led Rutgers to two NCAA tournament appearances (it would have been three, but COVID canceled the 2020 appearance); despite his 6’6” height, Harper often played power forward, using his broad frame defending larger players. After last night’s NBA Draft finished up, it was time for teams to load up on undrafted free agents to fill out the back end of their rosters and summer league squads.

Raptors: Two-way signing Ron Harper Jr. has tons of potential (Raptors Rapture)

The Toronto Raptors adding Rutgers guard-forward Ron Harper Jr. on a two-way contract only strengthened this 2022 NBA Draft class.

With his unusual combination of frame and play style, Harper could end up making some appearances on the big league club this year. At 6-5 with a 7-1 wingspan, Harper saw time everywhere from traditional point guard to small-ball power forward with the Scarlet Knights. Ujiri loves that kind of player. A four-year starter for the Scarlet Knights who was a team captain last season, Harper averaged 15.8 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.

Report: Ron Harper Jr. Agrees to Two-Way Deal with Raptors ... (Raptors Republic)

Raptors sign Ron Harper Jr. (yeah, that Ron Harper's son) to a Two-Way contract.

The Raptors were left wanting all last year for a consistent shooting wing to emerge but other than Champagnie in some stretches, were disappointed. Big man defense and shooting wing were the two biggest needs this off-season and the Raptors have attempted to address both, albeit both players are unproven. What’s a Two-Way player you ask?

Two-way players will spend a majority of their time in the NBA’s developmental league, the NBA G League, but can also play in as many as 50 of their NBA team’s 82 games.
