Richardson would replace Derek King, who finished the season as the interim coach after Jeremy Colliton was fired on Nov. 6. Richardson and Chicago are working on a contract, according to a person familiar with the talks, and the move could be finalized as soon as next week. Kyle Davidson was elevated to the interim job before officially taking over on March 1. Chicago won the Stanley Cup in 2010, 2013 and 2015, but it has fallen on hard times in recent years. Richardson, a native of Ottawa, was an assistant on Montreal's coaching staff for the previous four seasons. Richardson, 53, played for six teams during 21 years in the league, finishing with 35 goals and 166 assists in 1,417 games.

Il est responsable des défenseurs, un rôle qui sera délicat à pourvoir au moment de son départ, surtout pour une équipe comme le Canadien en pleine reconstruction avec plusieurs jeunes défenseurs.

The long-time NHLer will have his first NHL head-coaching gig in Chicago.

He was always really respectful and well-spoken and put in an effort to speak French. Richardson was mainly handling the defence and penalty killing. The other family-related topic that comes up during Google searches for Richardson involve his daughter, Daron, who died by suicide in 2010. Richardson played just two games with the Ottawa Senators during the 2008-09 season and then retired on Nov. 27, 2008. Although he did not win the Stanley Cup during his career, Richardson won a gold medal representing Team Canada at the 1994 World Championships. He left the organization in the summer of 2016 and was back with the New York Islanders a year later as an assistant coach before moving on to the Montreal Canadiens at the start of the ‘17-18 season.

Richardson also held the role of head coach for the Senators' AHL affiliate in Binghamton from 2012-2016, compiling a 153-120-31 record during his tenure. With the Blackhawks in the midst of a full-scale rebuild, the team clearly felt comfortable in hiring a coach with no prior experience in the main role at the NHL level. Richardson has always been lauded for his ability to communicate with players during his time as an assistant, which is a valuable skill in the modern NHL. And with the Blackhawks set to welcome in an entirely new crop of young players that they hope will serve as the foundation of the team's roster for years to come, Richardson's ability as a communicator likely helped give him the edge for the job.

Not that Frank needs confirmation, but hearing this is happening.

Blackhawks to reportedly hire Luke Richardson as head coach (NHL)

The Chicago Blackhawks are reportedly set to hire former NHL defenseman Luke Richardson as its next head coach, replacing interim head coach Derek King.

Even if all three are back for this season the roster is so thin elsewhere that competing seems like nothing more than a dream. There is a possibility that Alex DeBrincat could be traded this summer, while the futures of Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews remain in doubt as both players enter the final year of their contracts. It will be his first NHL head coaching job as he replaces Derek King, who completed the 2021-22 season as interim head coach.

Luke Richardson will need to strike delicate balance while coaching ... (Chicago Sun-Times)

Kyle Davidson — as the Blackhawks general manager through the rebuild he'll conduct — won't have an easy job, but he will have a straightforward one.

The well-worn hockey trope that “we have the guys we need to succeed” won’t be usable. Richardson will be asked to do even better than King, for far longer, with an even worse team. In the locker room and behind the press-conference lectern, however, Richardson will need to operate with significantly more caution and nuance than Davidson will. Kyle Davidson — as the Blackhawks general manager through the rebuild he’ll conduct — won’t have an easy job, but he will have a straightforward one. As the man in charge, he doesn’t need to. When training camp begins in September, he’ll address what’ll likely be a ragtag team of players for the first of even more times.

Canadiens: Early Candidates To Replace Luke Richardson (A Winning Habit)

Now that Luke Richardson will be leading the Chicago Blackhawks, someone has to take his place as assistant coach. Here are some early candidates.

Recchi mentioned that Pacioretty embellished the injury after the Canadiens’ forward was seen Tweeting at the movies a few days after the event. Although it is way too early to predict who will be taking over the hazardous task of coaching the Canadiens’ defensive squad, for weeks now, there has been speculation as to who can be joining the coaching staff. The Montreal Canadiens lost a big piece of their coaching staff as Luke Richardson has been poached and will now be at the helm of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Luke Richardson and the Task of Helping the Blackhawks Win Again (The Hockey News)

Luke Richardson has paid his dues in the coaching business, and now he's tasked with bringing the Chicago Blackhawks back to playoff glory.

Nobody is saying it can't be done, but Davidson and Richardson are now squarely in the spotlight in a way neither has been prior to today. Davidson likely will be taking a scalpel to the roster, with rumors swirling he’s willing to listen to offers for star forward Alex DeBrincat. However, there’s no sense out there that Chicago’s makeover will include the trading of cornerstone forwards Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, so there’s going to be an expectation Richardson will have a high bar to clear in terms of the Hawks’ overall competitiveness. Richardson has a fresh start, but he's also going to face immediate and considerable pressure to improve the Hawks'results and get them in a legitimate race for a playoff berth in the Central Division. Considering Chicago only was better than the abysmal Arizona Coyotes in the Central last season, this is going to require a major leap under Richardson's tenure. He had the hype that accompanied being a seventh-overall NHL draft pick, and although he didn’t become a star, he gained respect for an honest, defensively-responsible game He’s been the same way since he moved into the coaching ranks in 2009: there’s no pretense to him. Richardson’s new challenge will be to make the Hawks into a playoff contender. He’s a straightforward, unassuming guy who understood he’d have to work hard at coaching before he was given the reins at the NHL level.

Brian Compton wrote a terrific story about the Richardson family in 2018 and the work Luke was doing while an assistant with the Islanders to help grow awareness of mental health issues. The most significant and important thing to know about Luke Richardson — as a player, coach or person — is that he’s dedicated. In the first he speaks about Suzuki. Suzuki was asked specifically what he (as a forward) had learned from Richardson, whose role was primarily working with defensemen on the team. Richardson was also a physical defenseman during his time in the league; he piled up 2,055 penalty minutes in 1,417 regular-season games. One thing we immediately take away from the back of Richardson’s hockey card that will be important in his role as the Blackhawks’ new head coach is the start of his NHL career.
