QB Arch Manning, No. 1 recruit in 2023 class, commits to Texas (ESPN)

Arch Manning ended the intrigue Thursday afternoon, using his first tweet to commit to Texas over suitors that included Georgia, Alabama, LSU, ...

"What I've been impressed with is him living with the pressure," the coach said. They also have talented quarterbacks in Maalik Murphy, an ESPN 300 recruit in the class of 2022, and Hudson Card, who was ESPN's No. 2 quarterback recruit in the class of 2020. "He's a prototypical kid that sees the field well. But the coaches who recruited Manning were blown away by his work ethic, as he has embraced the details. The Longhorns have Ohio State transfer Quinn Ewers, who was widely considered the top quarterback in the class of 2021. The commitment of Manning's high school teammate and close friend Will Randle, a three-star tight end who committed to Texas earlier this week, drew interest as it represented a bellwether for where Manning could be leaning. Manning's commitment to Texas represents him both carving his own path and perhaps reuniting with the family's SEC roots. They really took the time to really recruit hm. Although Manning has long been considered the top player in the class of 2023, the family remained intent on attempting to keep his recruitment as low-key as possible. It also gives Texas a key building block for its 2023 recruiting class, with skill players expected to be attracted to playing with a talent such as Manning. But keeping things low-key has still been difficult, considering the family's football history and the magnitude of how much his decision could sway a program's fortune. There's a huge ceiling in front of him."

Manning hit 20 of 23 passes for 271 yards and five TDs against Murray State. He passed for 325 yards and a TD against Alabama in a 27-24 victory on Oct. 13, 2001. Eli played in the BCS era and put Ole Miss on the football map. That’s the next question worth watching. Manning replaced Helton and hit 14 of 23 passes for 256 yards, two TDs and an interception to help the Vols hold off the Bulldogs 24-21. Manning, however, made a lasting first impression in the 2000 Music City Bowl against West Virginia in Don Nehlen’s final game. Manning will have the opportunity to do something even his famous family members did not do, and that’s be the starting quarterback in his first game. Manning also threw six TDs against Arkansas in a 58-56 loss on Nov. 3, 2001. Manning with 1,141 passing yards, 11 TDs and six interceptions as a freshman. No. 10 Alabama beat Tennessee 17-13 on Oct. 15, 1994 for the only loss in that stretch. Imagine a world where Peyton Manning was third on the depth chart. Will Arch start from Day 1? None of them were able to win a national title.

Arch Manning commits to Texas, ending months of speculation (USA TODAY)

The nephew of NFL MVPs Peyton and Eli Manning, Arch Manning also was courted by Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Clemson and Virginia.

His commitment comes after taking visits to each of his three finalists. Alabama seemed to drop out of the running completely after accepting a commitment last month from a quarterback in the 2023 class. The nephew of former NFL quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning, Arch Manning held offers from every major program in the Football Bowl Subdivision before narrowing his list to a handful of elite schools — including Clemson, LSU and more — and trimming his options down to three: Texas, Alabama and Georgia.

Manning's commitment might throw a wrench into that plan -- or set up the Longhorns for quite a run of quarterbacking success. His grandfather, the beloved former Saints quarterback Archie Manning, admitted in 2019 that Arch was ahead of his uncles Peyton and Eli as a freshman quarterback, increasing the attention for a player who was already bound to attract it. Arch Manning has intentionally stayed out of the spotlight as much as possible, but his talent has been on the football world's collective radar since he was in junior high.

Arch Manning commits to Texas: Five-star quarterback, No. 1 overall ... (CBSSports.com)

Manning is viewed as a program-changer, which is exactly what Texas and coach Steve Sarkisian need.

"Steve Sarkisian and company have been all in on Arch Manning from the beginning," Wiltfong said. But with top-notch facilities, fervent booster support and a strong history, Texas has all the resources needed to compete for national titles. The Longhorns have reached 10 wins just once in the past 12 seasons since the heights of Mack Brown's tenure in the first decade of the 2000s. In closing strong with Manning, the Longhorns also picked up a commitment Sunday from his high school teammate, three-star tight end Will Randle. Sark has recently reeled in Ewers, the ex-Ohio State quarterback and former five-star recruit, ex-Alabama tight end Jahleel Billingsley and several other stars to Austin, Texas, as he efforts to replenish a depleted roster. In the end, Arch appeared to choose Texas over Georgia after Alabama solidified a contingency plan with the commitment of Eli Holstein, another 2023 blue-chip quarterback, last month.

Here's how he currently compares to them in terms of their height and weight in the NFL: Projects as an All-American prospect at the next level with the potential to have his name be one of the first called in the NFL Draft. He will take off and improvise out of the pocket like his granddad. Can play rushed under duress at times, affecting his accuracy in decision making in the short to intermediate part of the field. Entering his fourth season as a starter as a senior at Newman, Manning figures to be prepared to make an immediate impact at the next level. Also carries a substantial mental load for a junior quarterback with the responsibility of setting protections. Exhibits clean feet in the pocket while demonstrating good foot quickness and play tempo in his drop. Displays excellent arm talent, showing the ability to make every throw on the field within the pocket. Arch Manning, the grandson of Archie, son of Cooper and nephews to Peyton and Eli, has stood out among recruiting boards for several years simply because of his last name. Displays above average athleticism and adequate mobility as a runner, increasing his rushing totals every season over the last three years. That makes him just one of seven such players to achieve a "perfect" score, alongside the following players: If Manning's rating remains at 1.000 throughout his recruitment, he would become tied as one of the top six recruits 247Sports Composite's all-time recruiting board.

Arch Manning is set to extend his family's football story to a third generation after committing to Texas over other top college programs.

Manning’s choice of Texas may be a deliberate decision to take pressure off his shoulders. There was a lot on his shoulders. Took his time and showed a lot of maturity. The Crimson Tide has another year of No. 1 overall play from Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young ahead, and similar to Georgia behind Young it has two potential stars waiting in the wings. But if he lives up to the hype, he could be gone as soon as Manning's freshman year. Georgia is hardly in what anyone call dire straits for 2023. Of course, the recruitment of Manning does put some pressure on the young quarterback. Stetson Bennett is entering his senior season, and in 2023 it will likely be a competition between current redshirt sophomore Carson Beck and current redshirt freshman Brock Vandagriff. Vandagriff was as high as the seventh-best recruit in the country in 2019, and when he signed he was 17th. Current Texas QB Quinn Ewers is a curious case.

Arch Manning commitment just the latest win for University of Texas ... (USA TODAY)

The Texas football team is just about the only Longhorns program struggling right now – and even it has momentum after the commitment of Arch Manning.

And while that may not happen for a while, even with Manning verbally in the fold, the Longhorns already have sports momentum going for the 2022-23 school year. At No. 1, with all but one of the first-place votes: Texas. Texas’ athletics success this year allowed it to clinch its second consecutive Division I Learfield Directors’ Cup, honoring all-around sports achievement, before the baseball championship was settled. Texas won four NCAA team championships this year, taking the titles in men’s indoor track and field and three spring sports: women’s tennis, rowing and men’s golf. The Longhorns also had six second-place finishes, according to a recent athletics department news release. Can one player who won’t be arriving on campus until next year change all that?
