The Florida Panthers are hiring former Winnipeg Jets coach Paul Maurice as their next coach, ESPN has confirmed.

But the Panthers were swept by the rival Tampa Bay Lightning in the second round, scoring just three goals in the series. While other coaching candidates were rumored, the Panthers zeroed in on Maurice when there was mutual interest, vetting him on everything from his player management to his on-ice tactics. He has coached 1,685 regular-season NHL games, the fourth most in NHL history, and is seventh in career wins with 775.

The Florida Panthers are in the process of hiring Paul Maurice as their new head coach on a three-year deal, according to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger.

Maurice was fired by Carolina in 2003 before being hired by the Toronto Maple Leafs to coach their American Hockey League affiliate in 2005. Maurice started his NHL coaching career with the Hartford Whalers in 1995 at age 29. There is now clarity in the position and Maurice can begin building his own staff. He has coached the fourth-most games in NHL history (1,684) with four franchises — Winnipeg, Toronto, and Carolina. After dispatching the Washington Capitals in six games they were swept by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Paul Maurice to Become Head Coach of Panthers (The Hockey News)

The Florida Panthers are reportedly set to name Paul Maurice as the club's new head coach.

Maurice had been one of the longest-tenured coaches in the NHL prior to his resignation on Dec. 17, with the 2021-22 season having served as his ninth behind the Jets' bench after taking over for Claude Noel in 2013. Replacing him now is Maurice, the veteran bench boss who actually stepped down as coach of the Winnipeg Jets back in December while the team was struggling to grapple with a playoff spot. Of course, the way in which the season ended certainly played a factor in the organization's decision to move on.

That’s how long he’s been in the trenches, and that wealth of experience is what Zito is banking on. Zito is likely interested in moving goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, but the goalie’s four years and $40-million left on his contract makes Zito likely the only NHL GM interested in moving it. Nothing against Winnipeg or its lovely citizens, but that’s a step up for Maurice. The Jets will be in the mix for a playoff spot in the Central Division next year no matter who they hire as Maurice’s permanent replacement, but few expect them to be at the top of any group of standings. That’s what he did one-third of the way through the 2021-22 campaign, stepping down as Winnipeg’s head coach after eight seasons guiding the Jets. Maurice recognized a malaise that had crept into the dressing room, and he understood he couldn’t get them over the hump, so he left, despite having term left on a contract extension he signed in February of 2020. Zito could’ve gone off the mainstream path and gone with an unproven commodity, the way the Edmonton Oilers did this past season when they replaced Dave Tippett with Jay Woodcroft. However, sticking with Brunette, especially after the Panthers were steamrolled by Tampa Bay in a second-round sweep this spring, was clearly not Zito’s first choice. There are plenty of great head coaching candidates out there – Brunette included – but it makes sense that Panthers GM Bill Zito decided on Maurice, who has 1,665 games of NHL experience, as well as two conference final appearances and one Stanley Cup Final to his credit.

Paul Maurice will be the next coach of the Panthers, replacing interim coach Andrew Brunette. The former Jets coach has the sixth most wins in NHL history.

Ultimately, Zito let Brunette coach with the interim tag all year because it gave him flexibility to make a change in the offseason if he felt it was necessary. Brunette was a finalist for the Adams Award, mostly for his handling of the unexpected transition and the steady hand he had in guiding one of the NHL’s most stacked rosters to a historic regular season. After taking the appropriate amount of time for analysis, we determined that we needed the perfect fit to continue with the growth of our players and stay on the path for our franchise goals,” general manager Bill Zito said in a statement.

The Resume of New Panthers Head Coach Paul Maurice (The Hockey Writers)

The Florida Panthers hired Paul Maurice as their new head coach on Wednesday. Here is a look at the credentials Maurice brings to Florida.

Maurice and the Jets made the playoffs in five of his seven full seasons in Winnipeg, going as far as the conference finals in 2018. Maurice returned “home” to Carolina in 2008, becoming head coach of the Hurricanes 25 games into the 2008-09 season. Maurice ventured overseas after that, going to the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) to become head coach of Matallurg Magnitogorsk in 2012. Following a one-year stint as head coach of the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, Maurice was brought up to their parent club, the Toronto Maple Leafs, in 2006. In 1997, the Whalers were relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina, and renamed the Carolina Hurricanes. Maurice served as head coach of the team until December 15, 2003, when he was fired following a last-place finish the season before and a slow start to that season. Maurice resigned as head coach of the Winnipeg Jets in December following almost seven years with the team.
