According to Brownlee, the Phone (1) uses over 900 LEDs to make up the light strips seen on the back of the device. YouTuber Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) put up a short video (above) with an initial look at the Nothing Phone (1), including a deep dive into the lights. Last week, we got to see the Nothing Phone (1)’s weird light strips in action thanks to a YouTube video.

Nothing Lives Up to Its Name, Hypes Up Nothing (Gizmodo)

Nothing will reveal the rest of the details at a July 12 event (unless it decides to keep teasing bits up until then, which seems possible). With the auction, it seems like Nothing is going for a similar launch strategy as Carl Pei’s former darling, OnePlus, which has sunk into the arms of its big owners overseas since Pei’s exit. You also won’t have to turn on the screen to see your charging progress with the Nothing smartphone. We’ve seen Android phones throughout the years attempt to pave their way based on a different type of aesthetic (remember the Nextbit Robin?) with little success beyond the initial launch. The back of the device is known as Nothing’s “glyph interface,” with 900 individual LEDs embedded into a neat, futuristic pattern. In the latest video from renowned YouTuber, Marques Brownlee (also known as MKBHD), we finally glimpse one of the smartphone’s marquee features: its light-up chassis.

The lighting system is called the "glyph interface" and it consists of 900 individual LED lights that are situated on the back of the Phone 1. After months of teasing, Nothing has given us a first glimpse of the Phone 1 via a "hands on" video from YouTuber MKBHD and by launching an official product page on its website. The Phone 1 is the company's second product and first-ever smartphone.

Nothing CEO Carl Pei previously hinted in an interview with The Verge that they could serve as a modern take on the classic smartphone notification LED, but now we have a much better idea of how this will actually work in practice. Brownlee’s video highlights a couple of different use cases, including having the LEDs work as a charging indicator, highlighting unread notifications, or flashing in time with ringtones. It showed off the design of the rear of the phone last week and has already released a beta preview of its Android-based launcher, Nothing OS. Internally, we know that the phone is running a Snapdragon processor, though other specs are yet to be announced.

Ahead of its launch, though, we’re getting a first look at the Nothing Phone (1) and its signature trick, “glyph” lights. We’ll have to wait and see on that one. The front also has moderately sized bezels in today’s market, but with a hole-punch for the selfie camera instead of the iPhone’s notch.

You can also assign particular ringtones to contacts and the lights will let you know who’s calling when the phone is upside down. These include setting the brightness of the lights themselves, some integrated ringtones which glow up various parts of the light strips in sync with the ringtone music, and also a Flip-to-Glyph feature, which can trigger the Glyph interface to work only when the phone is flipped upside down. The exclusive look at the phone comes thanks to YouTuber MKBHD, who showed off the Nothing phone (1) from all angles in his new video.

As seen in the images that surfaced earlier, the Nothing Phone 1 has a total of 900 LEDs on its back panel that make up for a distinguished pattern, which also happens to be the mascot for the smartphone. However, the Nothing Phone 1 stands out – the company has used the same semi-transparent design language on Nothing Ear 1, the first product released by the company. After revealing the official images of the device a couple of days ago, Nothing has finally lifted the embargo on one of the first impressions videos from one of the most popular tech YouTubers in the world.

Nothing Phone (1) shows off the evolution of the notification LED (XDA Developers)

It looks like the Nothing Phone (1) has a couple tricks up its sleeve with regards to its large notification LEDs.

It will be interesting to see just how far Nothing can take this movement and to see how many stay along for the journey. The LEDs don’t stay illuminated constantly and can be reactivated just by wiggling the phone. The customizations can even be done in apps, giving users an idea of what kind of notification has arrived. While the front looks like your typical Android smartphone (though with equal bezels), the rear looks unique. Cryptic would be an understatement when describing Carl Pei’s Nothing. Up until a week ago, the company was slowly building anticipation for its upcoming smartphone, the Phone (1), by trickle-feeding its audience and supporters, mostly little snippets of nothing. Today, we get to hear a little more about the phone and its LEDs, thanks to a new video posted by MKBHD.

The Nothing Phone (1) screen design is finally out via a hands-on video of the transparent back's gimmicky LED lighting system in action.

And we do expect the Phone (1) to be a high-end handset. It’s unclear what the Nothing Phone (1)’s rear panel is made of. We already saw last week that the transparent Phone (1) will not get you a look at the actual components of the handset. Moreover, the Phone (1) features several strips made of over 900 LEDs, that have different purposes. But the first hands-on preview of the Phone (1) actually shows the screen in action, and it’s exactly what you expect. Then, the LED strip on the bottom will act as a progress bar for the battery. Brownlee did not discuss the display, specs, software experience, or user interface in his Nothing Phone (1) hands-on preview. It turns out that anyone expecting the Phone (1) to feature a regular hole-punch display design was right. Put differently, the first iPhone that will feature a hole-punch display will look a lot like these Android handsets, Nothing Phone (1) included. The iPhone 14 will bring over a pill-and-hole design for the Pro models. Nothing’s marketing blitz is running at full speed ahead of the Phone (1) announcement next month. More important than the rear-facing gimmicks are the Phone (1)’s screen design and software features, areas where Nothing isn’t ready to reveal anything.

First smartphones are hard to do well, and if Nothing can take what it learns from Phone (1) and then includes North America in the release for its next product — for example, an improved Phone (2) — we might end up with something great. Now, Nothing did leave the possibility of a U.S. (and, hopefully by extension, Canadian) phone release open for the future. Moreover, Nothing told PC Mag that people can try and use Phone (1) with U.S. carriers, but it may not work well. Here's why the Nothing phone (1) isn't coming to the US (Android Central)

StockX has opened bids for the first 100 units of the Nothing phone (1). The online marketplace says that the phone is "not fully supported in North America." ...

That said, it's a bummer that potential U.S. buyers will have to miss out on the Nothing phone (1), given all the hype surrounding the device. The company told PCMag that it has "big plans to launch a U.S. supported smartphone in the future." "While we’d love to bring phone (1) to the entire community around the world, we're focusing on home markets, including the UK and Europe, where we have strong partnerships with leading local carriers. To say that the Nothing phone (1) has been hyped up is a bit of an understatement. Companies like OPPO and Xiaomi, which make some of the best Android phones, have little to no retail presence in the U.S. For smaller companies like Nothing, it is likely much more difficult. Purchase is not available for customers living in Mexico and South Korea."

Nothing delivers major blow to U.S. customers pining for a Phone (1) (Input)

Despite the mounting hype, Nothing confirmed that the Phone (1) won't debut in North American markets.

Looks like we’ll just practice some patience while our friends across the Atlantic get to enjoy the Nothing Phone (1) when it releases on July 12. “While we’d love to bring Phone (1) to the entire community around the world, we’re focusing on home markets, including the U.K. and Europe, where we have strong partnerships with leading local carriers,” Nothing told PCMag in a statement. The wait continues — Weirdly enough, Nothing is also auctioning off the first 100 Phone (1)s on StockX, which will be serialized. There’s still some hope here because Nothing also told PCMag that it’s planning to have a smartphone that works for U.S. markets in the future. You could try to use the device in the U.S., but you’d essentially be rolling the dice to see if it even works. Nothing was steadily chugging along on its hype train in the last few weeks.
