The 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' Finale Surprised Fans With This Star Wars ... (Bustle)

After first appearing in 'The Phantom Menace,' Liam Neeson's character, Qui Gon Jinn, has returned to Star Wars in 'Obi-Wan Kenobi'.

But if the Obi-Wan Kenobi finale tells fans anything, it’s that the franchise has “got a ways to go.” Neeson first played Qui-Gon Jinn in 1999’s Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, where he served as Kenobi’s Jedi Master. Story-wise, Phantom Menace is the first Star Wars installment, but if we’re talking release dates, A New Hope was the first movie of the franchise to hit theaters in 1977. With this line, the show ends, but it also leaves room for a continuation if Lucasfilm and Disney+ choose to renew Obi-Wan Kenobi for another season. As Star Wars fans know, Phantom Menace is the only Star Wars movie in which Neeson appears, mainly because he gets murdered by a horned Sith Lord during the climax. At the end of the Season 1 finale, Obi-Wan is trekking through the desert on the back of a trusty steed. The show does its best to fill in the gaps of what unfolded in the time between Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope. Meanwhile, it also delivers on some fan service by bringing back familiar faces — including Qui-Gon Jinn.

Obi-Wan Kenobi's surprise cameo, explained (digitalspy.com)

Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 6 delivered a major cameo for Star Wars fans and if you're confused, don't worry, here's how Qui-Gon Jinn was able to return.

In season six episode 'Voices', Qui-Gon talks to Yoda about how to become one with the Force and retain consciousness after death. But if Qui-Gon's training was incomplete, how could he become a Force ghost in Obi-Wan Kenobi? "I was beginning to think you'd never come," Obi-Wan tells him, with Qui-Gon replying: "I was always here, Obi-Wan. You just were not ready to see. We've got a ways to go." However, the final scene certainly hinted at where the next season could go if there was one. This is the first time we've seen Neeson as Qui-Gon in a live-action Star Wars outing since The Phantom Menace. However, Qui-Gon has popped up in a few episodes of The Clone Wars when he appears as an illusion to Anakin in season five and when he speaks to Yoda in season six.

'Obi-Wan Kenobi' finale cameo fixes a prequel plot hole and sets up ... (Inverse)

In the finale of 'Obi-Wan Kenobi,' one cameo corrects an old Star Wars plot hole from the prequels. Plus, signs of Season 2 are very strong. Here's why.

On top of that, several compelling characters that were first introduced in Obi-Wan Kenobi — specifically Reva (Moses Ingram), Roken (O'Shea Jackson Jr.), and Haja Elstree (Kumail Nanjiani) — are alive and well by the end of the finale. If Ben never got together with Qui-Gon’s ghost and never learned how to become a Force ghost himself, then Luke (probably) couldn’t have destroyed the Death Star on his own. After Yoda rediscovered the trick of turning yourself into a Force Ghost in The Clone Wars, that information did not become mainstream right away. It also gives this toy special significance, which makes it all the more poignant in A New Hope. This moment seems like a big fan service nod, giving everyone a last-minute shot of nostalgia for the prequel era. At the same time, the same last-minute twist explains a long-standing Star Wars prequel mystery that has never been specifically solved, until now.

Ian McDiarmid and Liam Neeson return in Star Wars' Obi-Wan Kenobi (Polygon)

Liam Neeson's Qui-Gon Jinn and Ian McDiarmid's Emperor Palpatine both appeared in the finale of Obi-Wan Kenobi, the latest Star Wars series on Disney Plus.

Neeson isn’t the only Star Wars veteran who returned for the final episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi. The show also features a brief scene with Ian McDiarmid’s Emperor Palpatine, though his appearance in heavy makeup and through hologram could disguise a lot of digital lifting, including the speech simulation technology Lucasfilm is now known for leveraging. And it’s true that it’d be hard to find a bigger screen than the Volume, the massive LCD screen technology Lucasfilm leverages to give the Star Wars TV shows their stunning vistas without on-location shoots. “Yeah, I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to TV, I must admit, I just like the big screen, you know?”
