Full face veils, known as the niqab, are banned in all French public spaces including public transport and parks, streets and administrative buildings. The French are obsessed with the burkini – and it's all getting a bit ... (The Guardian)

The world is burning and France is fixated on whether women wear long sleeves to have a swim – a furore with obvious roots in the county's deep Islamophobia ...

While it may be dressed up with arguments about secularism ( laïcité deep Islamophobia. However, to be fair, there is more to it than just hatred of Muslims; there are also weird ideas about hygiene. But it seems a strange thing to fixate on, considering swimming pools are generally full of chlorine. The French are obsessed (OBSESSED!) with debating the question of appropriate swimwear and it is getting very cringe. The far-right leader Marine Le Pen declared that green-lighting burkinis was “how Islamist fundamentalists take over”. (Got to keep those fundamentalists at bay by persecuting any woman who wants to wear long sleeves for a swim.) Meanwhile, the interior minister, Gérald Darmanin, described Grenoble city council’s policy as an “unacceptable provocation”. Speaking last week to National Public Radio in the US, the mayor of Grenoble noted that the burkini decision “touched some very intense emotions for people”. With all due respect, those people ought to find a therapist to deal with those intense emotions. The head-to-toe swimsuit, most often associated with Muslim women, was banned in a number of French towns several years ago. Burkinis disappeared from the headlines for a bit owing to more pressing issues such as the global pandemic and war in Ukraine. I regret to report that they are back in the news because, last month, the city of Grenoble decided to let people swim in burkinis.

A senior government official hailed the ruling as a victory "against separatism, for secularism."

The restrictions were eventually overturned — also by the Council of State — for being discriminatory. The LDH had backed Grenoble's rule change over swimwear. Led by Green party mayor Eric Piolle, Grenoble had in May changed its swimming pool rules to allow all types of bathing suits and for women to bathe topless. risks affecting the proper functioning of public services and equal treatment of their users" the Council of State ruled Tuesday. The city council in Grenoble said in a statement Tuesday evening that it took note of the court ruling, while regretting that the court had attributed views to the council that it did not hold. They ruled Tuesday that "contrary to the objective declared by the city of Grenoble, the change to the pool rules aimed only to authorize wearing of the 'burkini.'"

France's highest administrative court, the Council of State, overturned a lower court decision allowing "burkini" swimwear at public pools and beaches.

The Council of State's decision on the issue has been anticipated for weeks. France is not alone in the growing conversation about swimwear and lack thereof. Not long after the ban was lifted, it was reinstated by Grenoble's administrative tribunal.
