Canada's inflation rate spikes to 7.7% in May, highest since 1983 (The Globe and Mail)

Statistics Canada says the increase followed April's 6.8-per-cent pace and was part of a broader surge in prices that's taken hold in global economies.

Have the Top Business Headlines newsletter conveniently delivered to your inbox in the morning or evening. On Wednesday, U.S. President Joe Biden called on Congress to suspend the federal gas tax for three months. Of late, there have been growing calls for governments to play a larger role in the inflation fight. Central bankers are trying to quell inflation via higher interest rates, but without sending the economy into a recession – a “soft landing” that investors view as increasingly unlikely. The agency noted that prices for used passenger vehicles rose 2.2 per cent in May from April. Traveller accommodation costs surged 40 per cent over the past year, while restaurant food rose 6.8 per cent. When asked whether the bank would move by 75 basis points at its next decision, Ms. Rogers did not rule it out. “The acceleration in inflation will likely force the Bank of Canada to raise rates a further 75 [basis points], a jumbo-sized move central bankers should have made earlier this month.” The Bank of Canada will make its next rate decision on July 13. “And we will not rest easy until we get it back down to target,” which is 2 per cent. At the same time, average wages aren’t keeping pace with inflation, marking an erosion of purchasing power. Gasoline prices rose 12 per cent in May alone and were up 48 per cent from a year earlier; the national average price for regular unleaded gas remains north of $2 a litre.

Inflation Surges to 7.7% in Canada, Fastest Pace Since 1983 (Bloomberg)

Annual inflation rose to 7.7% last month, up from 6.8% in April, Statistics Canada reported Wednesday in Ottawa. That’s the highest since January 1983 and well above economist expectations for a 7.3% increase. The inflation gauge rose 1.4% from a month earlier with gasoline, hotel rates and cars among the largest contributors to the gains in May.

Canada's inflation rate hit 7.7% in May, fuelled by soaring gas, food ... (Globalnews.ca)

Statistics Canada says the inflation rate hit 7.7 per cent in May, the largest increase since January 1983, as gas and food prices surged.

The cost of services in May rose 5.2 per cent compared with a year ago, up from a gain of 4.6 per cent in April, as Canadians travelled and ate in restaurants more often. “We know inflation is keeping Canadians up at night. The average of the three core measures of inflation that are closely watched by the Bank of Canada rose to 4.73 per cent in May compared with 4.43 per cent in April. Essentials such as food and shelter took on slightly reduced weightings. The gain came as energy prices rose 34.8 per cent compared with a year ago with gasoline prices up 48.0 per cent compared with a year ago. The agency said its consumer price index in May rose 7.7 per cent compared with a year ago, its largest increase since January 1983 when it gained 8.2 per cent, and up from a 6.8 per cent increase in April this year.

Another 75-point hike would bring the bank's key lending rate to 2.25 per cent, the highest it has been since the financial crisis in 2008. While that's lower than the overall inflation rate, it was nonetheless one of the major factors contributing to the higher overall increase, Statistics Canada said. Economists had been expecting the rate to increase from a 30-year high of 6.8 per cent in April, but the numbers for May blew past those expectations. "Interest rates began to increase in March, but monetary policy does not work overnight," he said. Canada is not the only country dealing with inflation at its highest level in decades. Statistics Canada reported Wednesday that an uptick in the price of gasoline was a major factor causing the overall inflation rate to hit 7.7 per cent. Prices increased by 1.4 per cent in the month of May alone. Food prices were also a major factor to the upside, with grocery bills increasing by 9.7 per cent over the past year. "If you aren't over 40, you have never lived through inflation like this, and unfortunately, we are not expecting much of a reprieve going forward," TD Bank economist Leslie Preston said. From meat for burgers, to flour for buns and even cardboard for packaging, he's seen the price of just about everything he needs to run his business skyrocket during the pandemic. Consumers are feeling the pinch. "Luckily, burgers have always been kind of recession proof and even pandemic proof."

Canada's annual inflation rate accelerated to 7.7% in May, galloping past April's 6.8% and analyst forecasts of 7.4%, data from Statistics Canada showed.

It also included a way of measuring used car prices, but that too had no impact on the headline number. CPI median and trim, at 4.9% and 5.4% respectively, were the highest on record. Excluding gasoline, the annual rate rose 6.3% up from 5.8% in April, Statscan said. And we think the Bank of Canada will be doing the same." Money markets see about an 80% change of a very rare 75-bp increase on July 13. And that's what has central banks on high alert," he added.

Excluding gasoline, the annual inflation rate in May rose to 6.3 per cent compared with 5.8 per cent in April. With the world opening up, there’s been a renewed interest in travelling and working in different countries as a digital nomad. However, one economist says officials could have rolled out new policies that would have a greater and more immediate an impact on families. So how much money do you need to make it work abroad? Here are some ways to save. That's up almost a percentage point from April's 6.8 per cent gain. But it’s also a time that created an enormous amount of anxiety among lots and lots of people. And the pandemic was an enormous shock, but I think it’s a formative life experience of a whole generation. The costs of a recession are really concentrated on the less advantaged. LO: Absolutely. And that (recession) is bad news, particularly for low-income Canadians because they’re the ones that are primarily exposed to the risk of unemployment. I wouldn’t say that we’re anything particularly special in Nova Scotia. The Halifax rental market is way tighter than most, and so some of the cost items have gone up a little bit faster in Nova Scotia. LO: I think that you really do need some way of meeting the needs of people who are most affected by this run up in prices because the consumer price index is a dollar-weighted index. Those are the items that have gone up more than proportionately so the increase in inflation has had a particularly strong impact on low and lower middle income households. It was a period of time when there was some likelihood that the supply chain disruptions of COVID would be over and that we would be coming back to normal. But for the next little while raising interest rates in Canada doesn’t do anything to the world price of oil. So the banks and the federal officials have to be seen to be doing something. When we see a large inflation number today, it’s partly on a base of slow inflation in the first part of last year. When those projects are not started, there’s a big collapse in housing prices and people start cutting back on their expenditures, when people have to renew their mortgages and they have less consumer spending.
