Rob Gronkowski follows Tom Brady's footsteps in second retirement ... (Musket Fire)

New England Patriots legend Rob Gronkowski has retired for the second time, announcing he's leaving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

And for this, I want to thank the whole entire first class Buccaneers organization for an amazing ride, trusting me to come back to play and help build a championship team. And let me tell ya, the journey in Tampa over the last 2 years has blown away what I originally wrote about in college, big time. Rob Gronkowski hasn’t caught a pass for the New England Patriots since his spectacular 2019 Super Bowl performance, a game where he and Tom Brady hooked up one final, impactful time on a lunging, diving play to set up a rare score in the snoozeworthy affair.

When Gronkowski retired the first time, you hoped for the best -- that his body would heal, that he would recover, that he would be happy with his decision. In his retirement announcement, Gronkowski said that in college he was asked what his dream job would be and where it was located. It was hard to watch and even harder to accept that Gronkowski was finished. Perhaps best of all, it was a joy to watch Gronkowski all the way to the end. So much so that within minutes of his announcement, his own agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said he wouldn't be surprised if Gronkowski took a call from Brady and returned by midseason. The life of the party was leaving on a down note, and taking all the fun with him.

Brady himself ended a 40-day retirement in March to play his 23rd season. Thanks for making it cool to be a tight end! The friendships and relationships I have made will last forever, and I appreciate every single one of my teammates and coaches for giving everything they had as well." The Buccaneers and Brady were hoping Gronkowski would play another season.

The Buccaneers just got a bit of extra cap space to play with during the 2022 season without the need to re-sign tight end Rob Gronkowski.

The Bucs are one of the few teams in the league that can make the most of a wide receiver room with three or four quality starters. Gronk is obviously still one of the best tight ends in the NFL, but his injuries and price tag last season did put an extra level of pressure on the team. Good teams go after great players when they’re available.

Rob Gronkowski is retiring for the second time. The 32-year-old Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end announced his retirement Tuesday via social media.

"The friendships and relationships I have made will last forever, and I appreciate every single one of my teammates and coaches for giving everything they had as well," he wrote. Brady announced his retirement in February before deciding to return for a third season with the Buccaneers 40 days later. Gronkowski retired after the 2018 season with the New England Patriots, but he decided to give it another go with quarterback Tom Brady, who coaxed him out of retirement in 2020 to play for the Buccaneers.

Rob Gronkowski retirement: Tom Brady has hilarious response to ... (Sporting News)

Rob Gronkowski has called it quits. But has he really?

It's worth noting that the Rams pulled a similar move with Eric Weddle, asking the safety to come out of retirement for a Super Bowl run. Indeed, Gronk told TMZ in late April that "it's just the Bucs" or retirement in his future. In their first year together as Bucs, Brady and Gronk connected for 45 receptions, 623 yards and seven touchdowns.

Saints should pray Rob Gronkowski doesn't pull a Brady (Who Dat Dish)

Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkowski announced his retirement on Tuesday, which is good news for the New Orleans Saints.

In the last two years at Tampa, Gronk recorded two solid seasons of 623 and 802 receiving yards, thriving under the arm of Tom Brady. The quarterback-tight end duo have been a pain in NOLA’s side ever since the two arrive in Tampa, and it’s safe to say the Saints would rather not see both of them on the field in 2022. With Brady under contract with the Bucs for the 2022 seasons, many believed Gronk would yet again follow in his footsteps and play one more season with his favorite QB, but it seems the 33-year-old tight end is happy with calling it quits — for now. After 11 seasons in the league, Gronk officially hung up his cleats having spent the majority of his career on the New England Patriots. He retired in 2019 only to return to play with Tom Brady for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the last two seasons, winning a ring in 2020.

Rob Gronkowski retires: Tom Brady's top 5 targets who can replace ... (Sporting News)

After Rob Gronkowski made his second retirement from the NFL official on Tuesday after two seasons with the Buccaneers, here's a breakdown the impact of the ...

Gage will see a big bump in his targets and scoring chances to complement Evans and Godwin, while also being a contingency for the latter. His blocking could use work and that will be the biggest short-term dropoff at tight end without Gronk. But Otton was drafted to help the Bucs continue to field 12 personnel (two tight ends) at key times for Brady opposite Brate with Howard also gone. Brate and Evans have plenty of support post Gronk, as the Bucs went further in padding depth not knowing when Godwin would be at full strength again post torn ACL. As usual, Brady will adapt by spreading the ball around well based on personnel and situation. Rachaad White will be an immediate part of Brady's "James White by committee" in the short passing game. Coming off ankle surgery, the rookie is a little behind in picking up the offense because not being able to practice with Brady. Gronkowski had nine red zone scores with the Buccaneers. Evans is still dangerous as a perimeter vertical threat but Brady loves finding his big body towering over cover men in the end zone. Tampa Bay lined up with 11 personnel (three wide receivers) almost 70 percent of the time last season, even with Godwin and Brown missing a combined dozen games. The Bucs plucked him from the division ival Falcons, for whom he posted a combined 138 receptions for 1,556 yards and 8 TDs with Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley missing significant time. With Arians stepping down, however, to hand over the offense to Brady and Byron Leftwich, the Buccaneers will adjust to better incorporate Brate's skill set. But before a Gronk reunion happened, Brady and Brate, who will turn 31 in July, got on the same page early as smart, seasoned veterans. In his two regular season, he posted a combined 100 receptions for 1,425 yards and 13 TDs.
