Seider played suited up in every single game this past season. And I think it’s funny that the NHL seemed to be the level that he seemed most-comfortable with. Since being drafted 6th overall in 2019, Moritz Seider has sliced his way through every level of hockey he’s competed at..
There is no question about it that Moritz Seider is going to be a staple in the lineup for years to come and this award was well-deserved.
Moritz Seider had a tremendous season for the Detroit Red Wings and is very deserving of the Calder Memorial Trophy,” Yzerman wrote. During his rookie season with the Red Wings, Moritz Seider played in all 82 regular-season games, scoring seven goals and dishing out 43 assists. On Tuesday night, Detroit Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider was awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy, which is given to the top rookie in the NHL for a given season.
Detroit Red Wings' Moritz Seider, Anaheim's Trevor Zegras and Toronto's Michael Bunting were finalists for the Calder Trophy, awarded to top rookie.

"We’re thrilled for Mo and his family, and look forward to his bright future as we all work towards our goal of bringing the Stanley Cup back to Hockeytown.” Instead, the Wings loaned Seider to Rögle in the Swedish Hockey League, and Seider thrived to the extent he was named the SHL Defenseman of the Year. He parlayed that into a stellar start to his Wings career, becoming the first defenseman since Lidstrom in 2010-11 to reach 50 points. He spent the 2019-20 season with the Grand Rapids Griffins. He had been earmarked to begin his NHL career in the fall of 2020, but that was waylaid by the pandemic. Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews took home the Ted Lindsay Award (MVP as voted on by the NHL Players Association) and the Hart Trophy. It's the first time it has gone to a Wings player since Roger Crozier in 1965.
Red Wings rookie defenseman Moritz Seider won the 2022 Calder Trophy, beating out finalists Michael Bunting and Trevor Zegras.
Predators forward Tanner Jeannot was the only other rookie to receive a staff Calder Trophy vote. In PHT’s staff version of the 2022 NHL Awards, Moritz Seider would’ve been the Calder Trophy winner. To go with the exact phrasing, it goes “to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition.”
Moritz Seider led all rookie defensemen with 50 points, a point total passed by only two other rookie defensemen in the last 30 years.
“Moritz had a tremendous season for the Detroit Red Wings and is very deserving of the Calder Memorial Trophy," Yzerman said in a statement. He understands the leadership aspect and isn’t afraid to be himself. You look back to the first game of the year against Tampa and he was already kind of commanding that respect, and not afraid of the moment and he just continued to grow. "It’s a long year when you haven’t played in the NHL before. Every single night teammates were pushing me hard and I just enjoyed every single moment, so it was very easy to come to the rink and try to get better." There’s a lot of ups and downs. Yzerman made a surprise pick in many analysts' estimation drafting Seider so unexpectedly high. Zegras received 15 first-place votes and was the second choice on 100 others for 1,191 points, followed by Bunting, who had 877 points (seven first-place selections). "The whole organization flew (down) here and it's real cool to see not only your captain and teammate has your back, but the whole organization. "Real cool surprise," Seider said. I'm very happy to bring something back to Detroit. I know it's been a while." "It's crazy," Seider said on a Zoom call with Detroit media afterward.
Seider was rewarded for a first NHL season that saw him unafraid, undeterred and unabashedly comfortable.
“Mo was in the center of the room dancing,” Smith said. “I think he will be one of the Norris Trophy candidates, for sure.” Thinking back to Mannheim, Alavaara recalled seeing that duality back at age 17 — Seider throwing big reverse hits in a game on a Friday, then showing up to a sponsor meeting and “tak(ing) over the show” with the microphone, too. “And then if he does it again the following year, or even throughout the year, if he’s getting better and better? At his end-of-season media session, fellow Detroit rookie Lucas Raymond marveled at the way Seider could move despite being so big and strong, and praised his shot and vision. He had a couple of those huge reverse hits when there was like a yard sale, where there were helmets and gloves and sticks all over the place. But they do speak to one of the most fascinating contrasts Seider displayed as a rookie. You need to have a lot of positivity.” This was October, the first of what turned out to be 82 games for Seider in Detroit this past season. It’s just protect yourself, and then make a play.” “It was special to watch,” Red Wings teammate Robby Fabbri said. He did all of that while providing a bruising physical presence and making big defensive stops for a Detroit team that badly needed it.
Moritz Seider is competing for the 2022 NHL Calder trophy. After having one of the best rookie seasons(from a defenseman), where would he rank?
He was truly something to behold this past season. From being able to handle the puck through traffic and finding the pass on the streaking forward, or getting a shot off from the perimeter and through traffic in front of the net. The Detroit Red Wings had two rookies this past season really show up: Lucas Raymond, and Moritz Seider. Raymond started the season off incredibly well, but was unable to keep that pace.

Champions aren't built on personal awards, but Mortiz Seider's Calder Trophy has helped validate Steve Yzerman's genius as Red Wings general manager.
Forget about Stafford and Justin Verlander and the Bad Boys and the Grind Line and all the rest of it. But the fact the Wings hadn’t had the NHL’s top rookie since goalie Roger Crozier in 1965, and still managed to win four Stanley Cups in the past 25 years, should tell us champions aren’t built with personal hardware. Even if Seider hadn’t won the Calder, my outlook for the Wings and what Yzerman is doing with them wouldn’t have changed. The man has the patience of Job and reveals almost nothing about his plans. It’s not just about one award or two young players or one season in which the team showed early promise. But if you know anything about me, you know I’m not an easy grader. He validated the drafting genius of Steve Yzerman, who used his very first pick as Red Wings general manager to select Seider sixth overall in 2019. At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if Yzerman still hasn’t hired a coach by the All-Star break. That made him the first Wings defenseman to reach 50 points since Nicklas Lidstrom in 2010-11. They also went on to become Hall of Famers and, in Bird’s case, an era-defining icon of the sport. If you watched any Wings games this season, you watched Seider, because he played in all 82. So, you know, no pressure on the next two kids who accomplish this for their city.

“I want to step up and be a leader on the ice and if you have to, also off the ice. “You want to be there and also help out guys for their first seasons and their rookie year,” Seider said. Seider is ready to roll out the red carpet for each of them. I think the fans are as excited as I am to see all the guys. Forward Jonatan Berggren is going to challenge for a spot after enjoying a spectacular campaign the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins. Defensemen Simon Edvinsson and Albert Johansson, forwards Elmer Soderblom and Pontus Andreasson and goalie Jussi Okinuora are arriving from Europe. Everyone is preparing themselves to be better next season, to prove more people wrong and to fight for a playoff spot.
When Detroit drafted Moritz Seider, a contingent of fans had “pure shock and disappointment.” But after a strong rookie season, those fans hope he can help ...
As for where the Wings are going, Seider said the team was highly motivated to improve. The Wings last won the Cup in 2008, and lost in the finals to the Pittsburgh Penguins the next year. After gaining experience in international competitions and playing in the D.E.L. as an 18-year-old, he was projected at best to be a late first-round pick. Before long, he was running the power play, killing penalties and delivering bone-crushing checks, all with aplomb. “When he was picked at six overall, it was pure shock and disappointment,” Lobsinger said. “I said to my mother, ‘You’re excited, I’m nervous, so somebody keep cool here.’ It was all about not stumbling down the stairs and don’t look stupid.” Three of its wins in April came against some of the league’s top teams, including Tampa Bay, which is vying for its third straight Stanley Cup championship, but Detroit finished sixth in the Atlantic Division and outside the playoffs for a sixth straight season. He has showed a poise and toughness rarely found in first-year blueliners as well as an offensive touch that has inspired comparisons to Nicklas Lidstrom, the Hall of Fame former Wings defenseman. “It was the No. 6 spot, so I wasn’t really paying attention,” Seider said in a phone interview late in this season. Drafting Seider and Raymond has fueled fans’ confidence that General Manager Steve Yzerman and his eye for talent will bring Detroit back to the glory it had during his playing days. “Any time a young defenseman can come in and play the position that well, and with such maturity, it’s incredible. The Wings could use another top-notch center and better play in net.
A memorable night for Moritz Seider was made more special when many Detroit Red Wings teammates joined him Tuesday at the NHL Awards Show in Tampa.
“Everyone is preparing themselves to be better next season, to prove more people wrong and to fight for a playoff spot,” Seider said. “I think it’s time for us to give something back, not only for ourselves but also for this city, the fans. “To not fall into a mental breakdown during an 82-(game) season,” Seider said. I just enjoyed every single moment, so it was easy coming to the rink and trying to get better.” “But other than that, I think it is more about the team.” “It’s cool to see that not only your captain and teammates have your back but the whole organization.
