The comedian and essayist wanted to start a conversation that leads to social change, he says. But he has no desire to speak to Cosby himself.

“It was really important to me that the survivors in the film didn’t feel like we wasted their time. With “We Need to Talk About Cosby,” a four-part documentary series that premiered on Showtime earlier this year, Bell convened a group of cultural critics, comedians and survivors of sexual assault to work through their complicated feelings about the pioneering Black entertainer who was imprisoned for a sexual assault conviction that was later overturned. Bell, a comedian, essayist and TV host best known for the Emmy-winning CNN series “United Shades of America,” says that this approach is his trademark. The trust that Cosby accrued as a moral authority provided cover for what his accusers describe as decades of abuse. “But the people who showed up really showed up,” he continues. So for me, all this stuff is the opening of a conversation, but not the work of actually changing laws and creating new mechanisms of justice.”

There are also interviews with black comics, actors and writers on the series and several of the 60 women who have accused Cosby of being a sexual predator.

I also think the big objective was to delve into rape myths in a way that you don’t always see and get some perspective for people that maybe haven’t talked to survivors of sexual assault. She states in the lawsuit that she had met Cosby in July 1990 on the set of the series, and he asked if he could mentor her. The thing that kept me going, as hard as it was for me, was thinking about the fact that Lili trusted me with her story. It’s a very invasive kind of trauma. Society is invested in uplifting the black male image that is denigrated in the media. Last October, Bernard filed a lawsuit against Cosby alleging he drugged and raped her in Atlantic City in August 1990.

Jurors at the civil trial ruled in favor of Judy Huth who accused the comedian of forcing her to perform a sex act in 1975 at 16 years old.

The trial took place nearly a year after the actor was freed from prison in Pennsylvania, when his conviction on charges of drugging and sexually assaulting another woman were overturned. Cosby, who did not appear in person at the trial, denied the allegation. The decision brings to a close one of the final remaining legal claims against 84-year-old Cosby, who more than 50 women have accused of sexual assaults over nearly five decades.

Court Sides With Judy Huth, Who Accused Bill Cosby of a 1975 ... (The New York Times)

Ms. Huth, who accused Mr. Cosby of sexually assaulting her at the Playboy Mansion when she was 16, was awarded $500000. Here are updates from the verdict.

At trial, Ms. Huth described a lifetime of bouts of anxiety and depression after her encounter with Mr. Cosby in 1975. She testified that she was 14 years old when she met Mr. Cosby at a tennis tournament in Palm Desert in 1975, and said that he invited her to the set of the film “Let’s Do It Again” in Los Angeles with the promise of being an extra. “My next memory was foggy, but I was in a bed naked and Bill Cosby was naked, inside me,” said Ms. Shapiro, who had come forward with her accusations in 2015. Ms. Huth testified at the trial that Mr. Cosby took her hand and forced her to perform a sex act on him. Later that day, they went to the Playboy Mansion where they played pinball together in the game room, she said, and he offered her a pill after she lost. But the conviction was overturned last year by the justices of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court on the grounds that Mr. Cosby’s due process rights had been violated. Mr. Cosby has denied that he sexually assaulted Ms. Huth, or any of the other women who have come forward in recent years to accuse him of sexual misconduct. Ms. Bonjean noted that Ms. Huth had changed her recollection of when the episode took place. But even though they stayed, Ms. Huth said she was preoccupied, only going through the motions and thinking about what had happened in the bedroom. To deflect him, Ms. Huth said, she told Mr. Cosby she was on her period. But Ms. Huth’s suit was able to move forward because the jury agreed she was a minor at the time, and California law extends the time frame in which people molested as children can file a civil claim. It was taken by Ms. Samuelson, Ms. Huth told the court, 15 minutes before, she said, Mr. Cosby molested her.

Bill Cosby verdict: Jury orders comedian to pay $500000 (Los Angeles Times)

The jury in Bill Cosby's civil trial with Judy Huth, who had accused the comedian of sexually assaulting her in the 1970s, reached a verdict Tuesday.

Asked in court what made her change her story, Huth said she saw pictures of Cosby with a beard in 1975, which he didn’t have the year before. Throughout the case, Cosby’s legal team had tried to poke holes in Huth’s timeline of alleged events, pointing out inconsistencies in side details that were inaccurate. On this and other challenges, Huth remained terse, meeting many of Bonjean’s questions with “no” or “I don’t remember.” Cosby did not attend or testify during the trial, although his video deposition was played during the proceedings. “Fourth, I want to thank all of the women who spoke out over the years, and refused to be silent in the face of what they believed to be injustice and sexual abuse by powerful men. The courthouse has a required closure time of 4:30 p.m. because of no budget for deputies’ overtime. The comedian and essayist wanted to start a conversation that leads to social change, he says. The only question remaining was whether Cosby should pay punitive damages for his alleged actions. Tuesday’s verdict comes nearly a year after Cosby was released from prison after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned his conviction in a separate case involving sexual assault allegations. After she said she was on her period, she said, he put her hand on his erect penis and masturbated him. Third, I want to thank my partners Nathan Goldberg and John West for being exceptional litigators and trial lawyers in this case, and I want the world to know that I feel blessed that they have both been my law partners for so many decades. In her civil lawsuit, which was filed in 2014, Huth accused Cosby of giving her alcohol and taking her to the Playboy Mansion in 1975, when she was 16.

Bill Cosby Loses Sex Assault Lawsuit and Must Pay Damages (The New York Times)

A jury in California sided with Judy Huth, who accused Mr. Cosby of molesting her at the Playboy Mansion in 1975, when she was 16.

Mr. Cosby has denied her account, and the case is still in its early stages. Ms. Huth’s was the first civil case accusing Mr. Cosby of sexual assault to reach trial. Ms. Bonjean pointed out that Ms. Huth, by her own account, had spent hours at the mansion after what Ms. Huth had described as a callous molestation, swimming in the pool and ordering cocktails. The jury sided with Ms. Huth. But its decision came after lengthy deliberations punctuated by multiple questions from jurors who sought guidance on how to interpret the language of questions on a verdict sheet they were given as a guide. The panel, which reported it was close to a verdict on Friday, had to take on an alternate and was told to start over. “Given the time frame, you have to go on somebody’s word,” he said in an interview. She fought Bill Cosby and won.” “She has demonstrated so much courage and made so many sacrifices to win justice,” Ms. Allred said. But Ms. Huth’s suit was able to move forward because the jury agreed she was a minor at the time, and California law extends the time frame in which people molested as children can file a civil claim. The Huth case, for them, offered a second chance at getting public vindication of their accounts after Mr. Cosby’s criminal conviction in the Andrea Constand case was overturned by an appellate panel last year on due process grounds. After the jury was dismissed, one juror, Aldo Reyna, 25, explained why he decided in her favor. He invoked his Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination and did not attend the trial.
