Activities at the lodge will start at 10:00 am and the opening ceremony will take place at Rotary Park at 11:00pm with events and activities running until 3:00pm. The City of Pembroke is partnering with Family and Children Services (FCS) of Renfrew County to offer a number of activities for National Indigenous Peoples Day on Tuesday, June 21st, 2022.

Batchewana and Garden River First Nations, schools to hold events.

Highway 17B will be closed at city limits to Belleau Lake Road from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. for the occasion. East View Public School will be sending students to Whitefish Island, where Batchewana First Nation is holding events. Many of the resources highlight Indigenous successes, authors, athletes, scientists. We have created a resource list, which includes lesson ideas, books, videos and activities that teachers can use in their classroom that day. Dancing, drumming, horseback rides and food will be included in celebrations to be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the GRFN Recreation Centre. The day will be capped off by fireworks at 10 p.m.

The Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival is taking place in the nation’s capital from June 21 to 26. KWE is a public event that celebrates the cultures, traditions and contemporary lives of First Nations and Inuit in Quebec, from June 17 to 22 in Quebec City. This will be followed by speeches, a bonfire, tobacco ceremonies and traditional dances that hope to blend “with the spirit of the place for a ritual that is both formal and playful, joyful and venerable.” Iqaluit will also host the Jimmy Kilabuk Virtual Fun Run Tuesday and Wednesday. More information is on the city’s recreation website, and routes will be posted at the Aquatic Centre. Iqalummiut will also be able to enjoy free turf time with a bouncy castle at the AWG arena starting at 1 p.m., ice skating at the Arnaitok arena from 2:30 p.m., and a family swim at the Aquatic Centre at 3:45 p.m. The day honours the cultures and contributions of Inuit, First Nations and Metis peoples and is held on the summer solstice — the longest day of the year, and a time when many Indigenous people and communities celebrate their culture and heritage.

Hay River – The Town of Hay River will be holding a full day of events, starting with a flag-raising ceremony at the fire hall. The Dene Drummers and Dancers will perform a drum dance demonstration at noon, followed by an afternoon feast of stew, bannock, hamburgers, and more. A community feast begins at the same venue at 6pm, followed by hand games and a drum dance, with prizes throughout. The games and activities to follow will include target shooting, a fishing derby, a volleyball tournament, skeet shooting, a canoe race, nail pounding, archery, “Dene gourmet” food cooked over fires, and a number of relay games. The day will end at 8pm with a drum dance hosted by the Fort Simpson Drummers. At the same time, a baseball game will take place. There will then be a fire-feeding ceremony at 10am at the Arbour. Participants can also enjoy a fishing derby, mini carnival and scavenger hunt, with a community BBQ available all afternoon. Festivities will begin with a pancake breakfast at the Liard Fuel Centre and continue with a fire-feeding ceremony, games for kids and adults and hand games inside the Arbour, with traditional food and a BBQ available all day. Vendors will be selling wares in the recreation centre from 3-5pm. Inuvik – Gather with family and friends at Jim Koe Park. Food will be provided from 12pm, including a fish fry, potatoes, hamburgers, hotdogs, smoked tea, water and juice. Tuesday’s celebrations kick off at 8:30am with a pancake breakfast, a cash prize competition for traditional activities (log splitting, tea boiling and so on) and a canoe race.

For over twenty years, Sims has fulfilled requests by the public and Catholic school boards to provide opening welcome, stories, songs and dance for children from junior kindergarten to grade twelve. It is a special occasion that provides another opportunity to learn more about the rich and diverse cultures, voices, experiences and histories of First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples.

Admission to the science centre is free for all Indigenous Peoples on June 21, and 50 per cent of regular admission will go to the centre's Indigenous Access Fund. Visitors can enjoy a day with Indigenous Vendors Market and Indigenous-themed programming throughout the science centre. The day's events kick off at 9 a.m. with the smudging ceremony, and prayer (held on the grounds outside the centre, near the ramp leading to the main building). It will be followed by drum and entertainment, a free barbecue lunch and then Metis dancers and jiggers' performance to end the official events. Tuesday, June 21 is a great day to visit Telus World of Science--Edmonton (TWOSE). To commemorate National Indigenous Peoples Day, the science centre is hosting a morning ceremonial smudging and prayer ceremony, drumming and musical entertainment and free lunchtime barbecue.
