If you grew up with Lego in the '80s, you probably spent most of your time building spaceships and castles: two of the brand's most iconic and loved themes.
The new Lego Galaxy Explorer will be available first, with pre-orders starting on June 18 for $100, and general availability on August 1. So to celebrate the company’s 90th birthday, Lego is resurrecting and reimagining both of those themes with two new sets that will be impossible to resist to those who’ve been playing with Lego for decades. Weighing in at a whopping 4,514-pieces, the Lego Lion Knights’ Castle features hinged sections so it can be completely closed up as a self-contained structure, or spread open to reveal an equally detailed interior with bedrooms, kitchens, a dining hall, and even an armory.
For Lego's 90th anniversary, it's reviving its classic Castle theme with the $400 Lion Knights' Castle set coming this August. At 4514 pieces, it's the ...
By 1989, he and the late Jens Nygaard Knudsen, creator of the Lego minifigure and Lego Space, had convinced the higher-ups to allow not only a pirate captain with his own distinct face (instead of the smiley), but projectile shooting cannons (though not in the USA), pistols and muskets, and a skull and bones pirate flag. The new Lion Knight’s Castle goes on sale August 3rd for Lego VIPs (it’s a free signup) and August 8th for everyone else. “The Jolly Roger... he really didn’t want me to put a skull on that, that was the limit, he didn’t want to see that.” They tried countless versions without, but it didn’t look right. He remembers how one of his original castle models had a blacksmith and a little kitchen before he had to remove them. He’s designed minifigures like the original skeleton and more recently Muppet Show figures like Kermit the Frog, as well as multipurpose elements like the feathers in the Forestmen’s hats and knight helmets — which he says were originally conceived as quills for minifigs to hold, too. A royal bedchamber and an armory bristling with weaponry and a dungeon and a tiny banquet hall and enough ladders and staircases to actually connect most of the levels. His team’s primary influences were the original yellow Lego castle from 1978, which similarly swung open on hinges, and the 6086 Black Knight’s Castle with its asymmetrical, castle-on-a-hill design. But perhaps the most incredible part to me is how the whole set transforms. But it turns out we’re not just getting one nostalgia bomb today — the company has decided to bring back classic Space and classic Castle at the same time. A waterwheel geared to a grindstone so the baker can grind flour for his bread. The most fortified-looking towers from a Lego castle yet, complete with arrow slits. For days now, I’ve been pouring over the high-resolution photos of each set you’ll find below, marveling over the details and hidden play features.

This allowed them to be displayed as an enclosed structure or mimic the walls of a much larger building instead. Several different factions appeared in earlier Castle sets, with the Forestmen offering some of the more unique environments. Revealed at LEGO CON and produced in honour of the LEGO Group’s 90th anniversary, 10305 Lion Knights’ Castle is a fitting tribute to a bygone era. Recent sets to feature the Black Falcons (like 31120 Medieval Castle) features Falcon knights with silver helmets instead. The most recent example of this is 11021 90 Years of Play, a Classic set also released for LEGO’s 90th birthday. Several different versions of the Lion Knights have appeared over the years, but the version here also appears to date back to 1984.
