Slater said: “I heard George Russell say well I could have been third or fourth if I hadn’t taken the high-risk gamble on the dry tyres. Had that been as dry as other corners we could have been in a really good place… Russell has beaten Hamilton at every race bar the opening Grand Prix in Bahrain but will have his work cut out to keep up the record starting four places lower down.

George Russell revealed that the Mercedes was not porpoising during the Canadian Grand Prix in a positive enough sounding update.

Silverstone awaits in two weeks, then, and they’ll be hoping that the smooth surface of the track there will play into their hands and allow them to set the car up in a way that will allow for good performance. Promisingly, Russell revealed that they did not suffer any porpoising with the car in Montreal, and it was just the bouncing issues to do with the ride height that was more of a problem: Clearly, there is pace in the Mercedes but it is all about finding the right set-up for it and they will hope that they can do that at Silverstone next time out.

"As I said, it just takes the one corner. "Half the track was totally dry, another quarter there was a small dry line and then the last quarter - turns one and two - it was just on its way. "We had a good car, and I saw the dry line appearing," said Russell. "It only takes one corner to let you down and that, for me, was turn one and two.
