You could probably say the exact opposite of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. In one of the most spectacular turnarounds you'll ever see, the Stampeders somehow ...

“Played it basically one play at a time like all the clichés, and found a little bit of rhythm.” They pulled ahead again on a Michael Domagala field goal into the wind with 1:23 left. Before anyone realized what was happening, Stamps DB Titus Wall — who also had an interception — was sprinting downfield and celebrating in the endzone after a 45-yard touchdown. I want to see the guys I know, and (Reggie Begelton, Luther Hakunavanhu, Richard Sindani) and every single person who plays receiver made a play, multiple times, over and over.” The last time the Stampeders had a half where they were outscored that badly was when they were down 23-0 to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in their final regular-season game of 2017. Give the Ticats a shot, and they generally won’t miss, and that was certainly the case. With the winds coming off Lake Ontario causing problems from the start, the Stampeders dug themselves a hole. Article content “I’m still in a little bit of shock that we did win, it seemed very improbable,” said Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson. “We were playing with a full-back at running back for most of the second half and down by so many, but you know what, it’s Week 2. The Roughriders put together an 18-7 rally last week, and the Stampeders outplayed Hamilton by a 23-6 margin in the fourth quarter and overtime on Saturday. Stampeders safety Titus Wall also had an interception in the third quarter and stripped Evans on a quarterback sneak in the fourth quarter. That appeared to be the case in the first half, playing behind a revamped offensive line. On Hamilton's next possession, they were stopped on third down at Calgary's nine-yard line when Thurman stopped a quarterback sneak from Matt Shiltz. "It's going to sting, and it should. "Everybody showed up at the right time," Mitchell added.

The Tiger-Cats allowed a 24-3 first-half lead to slip away and wasted an outstanding showing from quarterback Dane Evans.

First, Wall picked off Evans in the end zone. The first drive resulted in a 21-yard field goal. Paredes drilled a 46-yard field goal after Hamilton defensive back Tunde Adeleke floored his former Calgary teammate Peyton Logan with a clean hit to cause an incomplete pass. But they deferred to the Ticats, who started with the wind and the ball before 22,711 fans at Tim Hortons Field. Michael Domagala hit for Hamilton with 79 seconds remaining, and Paredes split the uprights as regulation time expired. A second touchdown pass from Mitchell, this time a 17-yard connection to receiver Reggie Begelton with 5:48 remaining, closed the gap to 27-20.

Calgary Stampeders storm back to win overtime thriller over Tiger-Cats (American Football International)

HAMILTON — The Calgary Stampeders were able to shake off a 21-point first-half deficit on Saturday to stun the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in overtime, 33-30.

Paredes lined up his fourth field goal of the night, sending a 39-yarder home to send the game to overtime. In the extra session, Paredes was called upon again and his 35-yard field goal put the Stamps up by three. Former Stamps’ DB Tunde Adeleke made a big play for the Ticats to break up a Jorden reception deep in Calgary’s end that forced the team to punt. While the Stamps were playing better in the second half, they had a big hill to climb to get back into the game. As the Ticats pressed on a short yardage play with under four minutes to go, Wall made an even bigger play than his interception. Evans found Steven Dunbar Jr. for a 38-yard touchdown hookup with zeroes on the clock, sending the crowd at Tim Hortons Field into a frenzy.

HAMILTON — Had they simply cut into the lead and made the finish respectable, it wouldn't have been the end of the world for the Calgary Stampeders.

Most important, after a 2021 season that was below the organization’s high standards, it felt like the Stamps of old were back. Bo Levi Mitchell, a two-time Grey Cup winner in Calgary ran over to the TSN panel after the win was sealed by Jameer Thurman‘s overtime interception, emotion spilling out of the two-time MOP. “With the start that we had, it made sure the guys stay together and that we keep fighting. Defensive back Titus Wall made a pair of game-changing plays, intercepting Dane Evans and following it up with a strip of the quarterback as he looked for a first down on short yardage. With all those mistakes that we made, we were still in the game. Instead, the Stamps spent the next 33-ish minutes carving out what just might be a foundation for the next 16 regular season games and beyond.

10 thoughts on the Stampeders' robbery in Hamilton, Calgary comes ... (3downnation.com)

The CFL is the exclusive property of TSN from a broadcast perspective. Evans had a game-high 22 yards on six carries, while the other rushers were effectively bottled up. A 37-yard field goal attempt by the Ticats was good but it didn’t matter, as the Stamps had too many men on the field. On the flip side, only six of the incompletions went less than 15 yards downfield, meaning that on balls that travelled more than 15 yards in the air, Mitchell was just 4-of-12. Rather it states under Article 4, Section K that “tackling an opponent by grabbing the inside collar of the side or back of the shoulder pads, or jersey” is an infraction. Earlier, I said that Dane Evans was taking advantage of a young Stampeders’ secondary. The old adage tells us that we learn something new every day. Dane Evans moved the ball at will before the break, amassing 273 total offensive yards and 245 through the air. That changed in the last two. Of Mitchell’s 28 completions, only four were throws of 15 or more yards down the field. I think our secondary has to rally. After the game, Bo Levi Mitchell referenced some other large come-from-behind wins he has seen in his career.

Next, Mitchell fired a pass to Jorden for a gain of 31. Mitchell went to Logan on back to back plays resulting in a 19 yard reception and 20 yard reception respectively. Rookie DB Titus Wall pushed the Stamps closer with a fumble recovery in the late stages of the fourth quarter. Peyton Logan made a couple plays to push the Red and White downfield. Mitchell then found Malik Henry down the middle for a gain of 21 yards. The Stamps first drive of the second half resulted in a two and out.

Danny Austin's 10 Takeaways from the Stampeders comeback win ... (Calgary Sun)

Danny Austin talks about his 10 takeaways from a unlikely comeback from the Calgary Stampeders against the Hamilton Ti-Cats.

No guarantees, of course, but if they play well there’s no reason the Calgary crew can’t come out of their next two with a 4-0 record. Considering that he was basically the third-choice running back two weeks ago for the Stamps, that’s awfully impressive. Thurman himself had four defensive tackles, but also sealed the deal in overtime with a game-winning interception. On Saturday, Cam Judge finished the game with nine defensive tackles. He’s got a unique ability to help the guy next to him rack up big numbers, and that’s proving true again this year. The recent addition of Trumaine Washington should help, and hopefully Wilson’s not out for long. Look, the defensive backfield just wasn’t very good in the first half. Regardless of how well they’ve played after halftime against the Ticats and the Montreal Alouettes, those slow starts can’t continue. There were dropped passes, a costly offside penalty and at least one long pass down the sideline that looked like it could have been caught. In the second half, Mitchell put the team on his back. The Stamps tried using Charlie Power at running back in the second half, but that’s not a real solution. The Stampeders are 2-0, with two thrilling, hardfought and too-close-for-comfort wins under their belt.

Cat-astrophic collapse: nine thoughts on Hamilton's 33-30 overtime ... (3downnation.com)

There have been a lot of heartbreaking losses in the history of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats franchise, from gut-wrenching Grey Cup defeats to playoff failures ...

The Bombers have escaped their first two games by the skin of their teeth, winning twice over the Ottawa Redblacks by less than a score in each contest. And because it is done in the preseason, no one cares that the game itself is not the focal point. Hamilton’s defence is veteran-laden and considered one of the best in the league, but in back-to-back weeks it has struggled to finish games. Using a regular-season telecast and taking away attention from the current players isn’t the way to go about it. TSN has developed a terrible habit of having celebrities and special guests interviewed in the booth over the last few years. But if you want to avoid all of this criticism, I have an easy solution: make Hamilton’s home preseason game every year the Hall of Fame game. In Week 1 against the Riders, it was a missed field goal to end the first half. Dane Evans was sacked just once, on a play where the quarterback was mostly to blame for his own demise. When the team opted to go with the second-year man out of Carleton University, many wondered if it was the right move. White had a sneaky good season in 2021, leading the Ticats in receiving yards and finishing sixth league-wide. White was darn near unstoppable for about three-quarters of Saturday’s game, hauling in a game-high 11 catches on 14 targets for 131 yards and one touchdown. It was still a stinging loss for a team that seemed to have victory well within their grasp.
